Jedediah Smith explored this vicinity. This is a historical mark. We found a plaque about the Tide Ways Island Memorial Park. We even found a beautiful lake. We loves our hike. That was fun!

This small island between Reedsport and Gardiner is inhabited by hundreds of fish-eating cormorants. Their roosting trees have been killed by the nitrogen in their droppings, so most of the south shore looks like a frost-covered ghost forest.

The trail needs tending. The woods are green and dense but it ends abruptly unless you want to scale down a precarious edge. There was construction on the right hand side. I did see some birds but no water.

We stopped here out of curiosity and it was pretty empty. Not much to do. There was a trail but it wasn’t very tidy. This is a definitely not a place to stop.

This is a great place to pull off the road and stretch, but the path doesn't lead to much. You can climb down the rocks and get a view of the river, but there are no benches or picnic tables

The plaque has never been replaced. Most of the trees are now dead. In my opinion, it's not worth stopping at all.

Short hike, no more than a mile, probably less. Eucalyptus trees here are full of nests for Comorants. Hundreds of birds on the trees, circling when I was there in July.

We had driven by this place many times and wondered what the plaque on the stone monument said - so one day in the fall of 2012, decided to stop and read it. It commemorates the family that donated this land to the state in...More
