I can say that this is, unequivocally, my favorite place in Portland. It's so fascinating and weird and amazing. It feels like walking into a museum, but of weird and fun stuff that you don't find anywhere else. Want a crochet diagram of a dissected bat? Got it. Fossils of two-headed snakes? Got it. Taxidermy bugs of all sorts? You know it.

The whole neighborhood is wonderful, with Flutter right across the street. Go and spend some time in the area, but make sure to budget plenty of time for Paxton Gate. We go on every trip to Portland.

I came here while I was out Christmas shopping, and it is an awesome place to check out. I would say this place goes along with the theme of keeping Portland Weird. All sorts of items to buy from Taxidermy, skulls, gems, and other odd things

Our nephew and wife introduced us to Paxton Gate on a previous visit and we HAD to go back. This is a very interesting shop that specializes in taxidermy but also has other biology books and workbooks as well as gems and mineral samples. We also noticed that they were selling eclipse glasses for the August 21 solar eclipse!

Looking into the Paxton Gate windows made it clear that being on the Mississippi Ave. Definitely a great collections of oddities - human skulls and animal skeletons, interesting art (actually an art showing during my visit), a book area that I could have spent the entire day in (not because it's a large selection - just a very interesting selection).

A few minutes after I entered a member of the staff (a young blond woman who I assumed was the owner) engaged me in a conversation. The information she provided was so interesting that I felt I was in a place of entertainment or a museum. As I was leaving I noticed that she may not have been that unique as most of the other employees were having conversations with visitors who all seemed very interested.

This is the ultimate place to buy gifts for hard-to-please friends. Many are rocks, fossils, pictures of birds, items of garden and natural sciences. The owner showed us around and gave us many suggestions for gifts. Such neat and unusual items to take in. I also bought some science experiment gifts for my grandchildren, which they loved.

I love horror, and monsters, and skeletons, but not in real life, I can only assume that all these poor animals died to be in gift shop. I noticed they took the taxidermied lion out of the window after Cecil the Lion was murdered, but this store is guilty by association. This is the worst of human hubris, killing animals so you can hang it on the wall. Awful.

This place was like a home away from home for me. Filled with taxidermy, bones and all sorts of other odds and ends (mostly odds). The staff was friendly and helpful and knew their stuff. Of course I would have liked to buy one of everything in the store but could only afford a couple of items. Great quality, classy and weird. Perfect.

I heard about this place on the “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” show and it definitely captured my interest. I’m so glad I had the chance to stop by and enjoy the overwhelming amount of things you can see, and purchase. The staff was wonderfully helpful and friendly.

I had read the reviews of this store before visiting Portland so I made sure to visit it. The store is strange in a nice way. Everything from animals hanging on walls, animals & reptiles preserved or mummified, lots of pretty type gift items - you name it, you'll find it here. This is a must-see store when you visit Portland!
