Unequivocally Fascinating
Sep 2020
I can say that this is, unequivocally, my favorite place in Portland. It's so fascinating and weird and amazing. It feels like walking into a museum, but of weird and fun stuff that you don't find anywhere else. Want a crochet diagram of a dissected bat? Got it. Fossils of two-headed snakes? Got it. Taxidermy bugs of all sorts? You know it.

The whole neighborhood is wonderful, with Flutter right across the street. Go and spend some time in the area, but make sure to budget plenty of time for Paxton Gate. We go on every trip to Portland.

Weird and Wonderful
May 2019 • Friends
This place was like a home away from home for me. Filled with taxidermy, bones and all sorts of other odds and ends (mostly odds). The staff was friendly and helpful and knew their stuff. Of course I would have liked to buy one of everything in the store but could only afford a couple of items. Great quality, classy and weird. Perfect.

I heard about this place on the “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” show and it definitely captured my interest. I’m so glad I had the chance to stop by and enjoy the overwhelming amount of things you can see, and purchase. The staff was wonderfully helpful and friendly.

Interesting
Aug 2017
Our nephew and wife introduced us to Paxton Gate on a previous visit and we HAD to go back. This is a very interesting shop that specializes in taxidermy but also has other biology books and workbooks as well as gems and mineral samples. We also noticed that they were selling eclipse glasses for the August 21 solar eclipse!

Interesting Place; Could be Categorized as Entertainment
Aug 2017 • Couples
Looking into the Paxton Gate windows made it clear that being on the Mississippi Ave. Definitely a great collections of oddities - human skulls and animal skeletons, interesting art (actually an art showing during my visit), a book area that I could have spent the entire day in (not because it's a large selection - just a very interesting selection).

A few minutes after I entered a member of the staff (a young blond woman who I assumed was the owner) engaged me in a conversation. The information she provided was so interesting that I felt I was in a place of entertainment or a museum. As I was leaving I noticed that she may not have been that unique as most of the other employees were having conversations with visitors who all seemed very interested.

A Fun-Weird Type of Store
Jun 2017 • Family
I had read the reviews of this store before visiting Portland so I made sure to visit it. The store is strange in a nice way. Everything from animals hanging on walls, animals & reptiles preserved or mummified, lots of pretty type gift items - you name it, you'll find it here. This is a must-see store when you visit Portland!

Almost speechless

This shop would have to take the cake for sheer oddity value! What an incredible range of curious, educational and outright bizarre items. Could have spent hours in here, but would have needed an extra suitcase to get my purchases home. This would have to be on everyone's Must Do list.

The BEST Oddities Store EVER!!!
Oct 2016 • Family
My daughter and I recently visited Paxton Gate in Portland, OR. We love oddities stores, the odder the better and we struck gold with this one! It was the most beautiful, well stocked, professionally done store of this nature that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. From the excellent and well-priced collections of re-articulated creature skeletons to the unique and beautiful mineral specimens, this store was an utter delight from top to bottom. It's a wonderful place for finding unique items for the nature lover of all ages. We entered hoping to kill a few minutes......we left two hours later and could have stayed another hour easily. Paxton Gate is my new favorite store .....period!

Lots of fun and interesting stuff to look at - or buy!
Sep 2016 • Couples
Some people may be turned off by the large amount of taxidermy inside, but it has a lot of very interesting displays for a variety of critters, bones, skeletons, rocks, fossils, unique buys - plus a very helpful and friendly staff. My husband bought me some handmade butterfly wing necklaces that were locally crafted and from a sustainable source. They are absolutely beautiful. If you need a one of a kind gift - this is a good place to look. I wish we had more time to visit. It's a good stop.
