About
All of our tours are outside walking tours so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. We are a small local family owned tour and research company. Our "Nob Hill-Historic Alphabet District" highlights an upscale residential and streetcar era shopping district. The tour was designed by Tanya & Mike. Mike Ryerson, a fifth generation Portlander and newspaper reporter, asked Tanya to augmented the route with architectural and cultural history documentation drawing from her master's work in Historic Preservation from Columbia University. The historic "Slabtown" tour led by Dr. March focuses on social justice in a community targeted by redlining, urban renewal and freeway projects - draws from her 2010 PSU dissertation work. For the darker side and peculiar lens on history we recommend "A Night with Ghosts: Haunted History" or "Murder, Mayhem & Oddities of St. Johns" which we occasionally lead as a family team. Check our or website for a variety of unique Private Tours.

Tanya provided a fun and informative tour and was very knowledgeable about the history of NW Portland! I also appreciated how inclusive she was of folks with disabilities as my brother is visually impaired and she adjusts the tour to fit the audience! We did the tour on Halloween and loved that she got in spirit and dressed up and even gave out candy!!

I recently moved to the neighborhood so.i took the St Johns tour to get a better feel for the area. My guide knew a lot and showed me a bunch of cool places or taught me new things about some of the places I was familiar with. Easy going and I would highly recommend.

What an amazing experience. I was fortunate to have Tanya work with me on a private tour for myself and business associates on the most beautiful moonlit night of October. The special treats at the start of the tour helped set the mood for the perfect walk around slabtown. As a born and raised Oregonian I had no idea so much history and spooky stories surrounded me in every day places, Tanya’s knowledge was so appreciated. The photos were such a great added touch and I know a handful of people on our tour went home to research even more. Looking forward to doing another one to see even more of Portland!

If you want facts AND stories, this is the tour for you!!! I’ve lived in the Portland area all my life and still learned so much from Tanya March on this tour! It was a great blend of architecture, history, and colorful tidbits about the local characters—with lots of humor thrown in. Tanya is a well-regarded resource for NW Portland’s history. Not to be missed!

Took my preteen son to this with me and we both absolutely loved it. Tanya told us some cool stories and interesting tidbits I had never even heard of before. She was friendly and very knowledgeable on the topics. She made it so fun for my son who had so many questions and comments and you can tell she truly enjoys doing this and having kids on the tour (we did the ghost tour). Would definitely like to try some of her other tours as well!

The tour guide knows everything about Portland's urban history, is entertaining, walks the extra mile (literally, in our case) to show you stuff you are interested in, and drives a Zamboni. What more can you ask of a tour guide? Both the Slabtown Tours we did with Tanya were really good, and we would recommend them for any visitor to Portland.

If you've ever strolled through NW Portland admiring the beautiful homes and charming tree-lined shopping streets, taking a guided tour with Slabtown Tours is an easy and fun way to gain a deeper appreciation of this special part of town. Tour guide Tanya is very knowledgeable, charming and fun. She customized our tour experience to match the sorts of things our group was curious about. She shared lots of historical context -- none of it I knew, even though I'm a lifelong Portlander. Her stories are colorful and memorable; she points out fascinating small physical details about the neighborhood that I'd never noticed before; she brings along photos. And, all in all, she makes it a fun way to spend an afternoon. I would definitely take another tour and recommend her highly to folks who live here, as well as visitors.

I'm glad our tours were an asset to your own understanding of Nob Hill & Slabtown. Don't forget that we have A Night With Ghosts tour starting on Friday the 13th in September-- if you are looking for a new adventure.

Tanya combines bits and pieces of the past that still exist in Slabtown into a bigger history of the neighborhood, city, and region. I felt like I was reading one of those books where you turn pages of transparencies onto each other until you see the full picture. And don't try to stump her by asking about buildings she doesn't mention - can't be done! I noticed some very interesting tiny homes and learned they had been moved from the space needed for the World's Fair - that's why they are so closely packed together. A very worthwhile walk through the past!
