Jimmy’s is closed but there are other options
Aug 2017 • Friends
If you are in town on Monday nights around 7pm, go to J Bar on 23rd Ave. in the Northwest section of Portland. Lots of great music lead by the Dan Balmer Group. Have a great dinner or just drinks and enjoy original mellow jazz from our favorite local guitarist. The three-piece combo is an institution here and well worth the trip. We go every chance we get.

Jimmy's is gone but Jack is not!
Jul 2017 • Friends
We LOVED Jimmy Mak's but alas, it closed after 20 years and Jimmy sadly passed away. Here's what we do now! We go to see Mel Brown and his jazz group play every Thursday night at Jack London Bar located downstairs in the newly remodeled Rialto located at 539 SW Fourth Ave. (corner of Fourth and Alder). Lots of parking around. Jack London Bar is a smaller venue but it's the same great music on Thursday night starting about 8pm. Drinks and food are quite good. If you are going with a group, it's best to get there early to grab a bigger table. Just make sure to leave two seats for us! :)

Alas, it's closed

This place closed this January. Had good thoughts about this evening attending a Maria Schneider concert at the PDX Jazz Festival. Buzz tonight is that this place is going to be reprised in another Portland bar suitable to keep the jazz vibe alive.

A fun Jazzy night for all
Aug 2016 • Couples
We really enjoyed Jimmy Mak's. The entrance fee was reasonable and we got a table right in front of the band. They have a selection of bands throughout the month.
The band we listened to were excellent and the singer had amazing vocals.
Friendly staff and they don't rip you off with drink prices which were average.
A fun way to enjoy a Saturday night!!

Best Jazz Ever
Jul 2016
Saw Mel Brown here last night. His band was the best ever and I was so caught up in how tight they were. The joy they felt playing together - 7 piece band - was inspirational and pure joy.

Visited on a Friday night. Seating not disclosed by door man.

Went to Jimmy Mak's as I was told they have good music there. Arrived and stepped in to the room with the door man. He was friendly enough and then told me the cover was $15.00. I thought I would give it a try but the rub here is that it was a show and there was no seating in the room where the music was playing. I had to go into an area with no viewing and no atmosphere had two beers and then left. A little disclosure from the folks on how this was set up would have been appreciated and actually, quite necessary.

Great night out
Apr 2016 • Solo
Went here to hear some jazz with dinner. Music usually starts at 8pm, but I went a little early a little past 7 and caught an opening act as well. The show lasts from 8-11:30pm with breaks in between but you can leave at any time, someone will gladly fill your seat!
Dinner and service are fantastic. It's normally what you would pay for an evening out, most entrees between $15-30. The portions are large, poor single me could not finish the delicious ice cream dessert. There is a variety of drinks available, including dessert wines. I had pan friend oysters, and I hope they keep it on the menu. They accommodate to gluten free and some requests for allergies. The service is great, everyone works well together and accommodates everyone's needs.
The band is awesome and funny. If you are not really into jazz, they play jazz covers that'll have you humming along. I still recommend it. Those sensitive may want to bring ear plugs, it can get loud when the show starts. There is a cover charge, I paid $6 upfront, but got to keep my table during the show. They accept card snd cash. After paying cover, go in and sit down anywhere. You don't really have to get anything if you want, but it's great food and drink.
Only thing is they announced they are planning on moving across the street soon, I didn't catch the date. All they are doing is expanding, should be same band and menu. Keep an eye out for it in case you're reading this month's after I went.

Jimmy Mak's feeds both body & soul
Mar 2016 • Couples
Jimmy should change his last name to "Magic" because there's something very special here, more than great food and amazing live jazz music. This was our first time dining here and it most certainly will not be the last!

Recommend you go Wednesday evening, the Mel Brown Quartet are regulars and they are wonderful! Their passion evident in every note, their sonic interplay is quite incredible, and food for the soul. Stay for the late show, too!

There's ample parking on the street or in the 3 nearby City Parking garages. Cover fee at the door was $5 per head, a bargain when you consider the quality of the music and intimacy of the venue. The sound was a high quality as well - loved it!

Highly recommended +++++ 1/2

Fun evening
Mar 2016
We went to Jimmy Mak's to see Patrick Lamb play. We got there early and got the bar stools near the table area. Best seats in the house! We just had drinks, no food. Service was great and this was a nice, fun small venue to listen to a band. We will go back.
