If you really want to see all sides of Portland, don't miss out on the Burside Bridge. It crosses the Willamette River in downtown Portland. Most of the year you'll find a crazy good/weekend open air market underneath the west side of the bridge, walking distance from the Willamette River. Many of the vendors are selling self-made items that make great gifts. You won't find stuff like this anywhere else, trust me.

Yes, Portland has a large hippy component - and you will absolutely see it at the Burnside Bridge Open Air Market (also called Saturday Market). It's close to the business district and major hotel chains in downtown Portland. I wouldn't recommend missing Saturday Market to anyone new to the area! The food is spectacular and cheap.

The east side of Burnside Bridge is in a less savory neighborhood, but if you want to truly "see" Ptown, do it right! Watch the skateboarders underneath the bridge do tricks worthy of Olympic events. Not kidding.

If you think my input was helpful, please remember to give me a shout out via "vote". I'm sucked into this whole Badge thing... ;-)

Don't miss out on the finer areas in Northwest Portland (a 10 minute drive of the Burnside Bridge & Willamette River). Lots of high end everything. Elephants market and deli - oh myyyyyyy! No one can vote that place down. It's too good and has all fresh ingredients. They cater, but you can walk in and order lunch to go or eat in front on tables. Many good varieties of wine available here too (of course micro brews as well!).

I wish I could take each one of you on a tour of this side of town. It really is eclectic and you need to see all sides.

Enjoy your time and don't miss Sellwood either!

I suppose that each end of the Burnside Bridge might not be paradise for some folks as each can be seen as a bit run down, but when I think of the Burnside I think of The Saturday Market (under the west end) and Powell's Bookstore close by and the events along the riverbank. The Burnside is mature and interesting just like many of us.

not sure what you'd want to see here... you can walk across, but not the safest to do... lots of homeless hang out on the bridge - all hours all days.

Although not the most beautiful, it's one of the oldest, most historic with easy pedestrian access at both the east and west ends. Also, close to restaurants, taverns and the famous Saturday Market.

Always a great bridge to enjoy from the banks of the Willamette or even drive across...If walking the bridge has great views of the river and both east and downtown Portland!

The Burnside Bridge offers pedestrians a great view of Portland night or day from a safely raised sidewalk that protects them from cars.

It may look like any other bridge, part of an aging, crumbling U.S. infrastructure, but neglect is precisely why its historic. Under this bridge is where skateboarding decided it was tired of being a crime. A gritty, grimy area that was tossed as a peace offering in hopes of solving the great dilemma of the time. what to do with the alternative youth. Back when i first saw it, it was little more than a wall with a transition. Over the years its been built and re-built as skating evolved. Back then, i never thought i would see skateboarding recognized as an Olympic sport, but here we are. Burnside did not single -handedly make that happen, but it was part of the fuse that fired the first shots in a grassroots revolution. Before Nike, before Tony Hawk pro skater, before accepting skateboarding as a sport, we were making moves. Never let anyone tell you your passion isn't worth pursuing.

I'm not sure why this was ranked in the top attractions of Portland, but please trust me...Portland has much more to offer. Curse as you're stuck in traffic waiting on this bridge, but don't visit it and call it an attraction.

It's an easy bridge to cross on foot and it takes you right over to the East side of town. From there you can walk to some of the restaurants such as Le Pigeon. The bridge itself isn't one of the pretty ones but it's functional

The bridge itself is nice, but it serves as a long-term camping area for the homeless and wandering street kids, who also hang out on the bridge. Assaults and robberies are not uncommon. If you are walking, it is better (and much safer) to cross the river using the Morrison or the Hawthorn bridges.
