Great for Sharing
Apr 2020
We live in Portland and friends always stay here when they come to visit. We enjoy seeing and sharing all of the artwork with them or chilling out watching a movie. One teacher friend started crying when she saw all the artwork and tributes to teachers. Staff is always nice when we ask for a fire in the courtyard. Service could be a bit faster at times though.

Superb reclaimed private school space

We were visiting some dear friends (and making new ones) when they suggested having a meal here. The revovation/reclaimation are superb and the food is great, as well.

Another Fun Place to Stay in Portland
Mar 2019
We stayed here on the night be fore we flew out of Portland, and this was place reinforced our love for the McMenamins chain. We watched a movie and enjoyed dessert and after dinner drinks in the restored gym, had a great meal at the Courtyard Restaurant--what an education!

Great movie experience at McMenamins Kennedy School
Dec 2019
Took in dinner and a movie at the Kennedy movie theater. Excellent food and a terrific movie theater experience in overstuffed chairs in an old gymnasium. Great price. We'll go again soon.

Horrible service
Dec 2019 • Family
Service here is horrid, it takes forever to get service. And in the theatre they have items on their menu that they are not willing to sell and when we ordered it the bartender cut us off and refused to give a reason, then half and hour later when the movies over they get your face and yell at you to "get the f*** out before they call the cops" and still refuse to give an explanation or take us to a manger, instead we were smirked at and told to go find her ourselves. Its absolutely ridiculous how they treat their customers.

This is probably one of the coolest places I’ve stayed. The McMenamin hotels are all amazing. This is in the heart of Portland, so it’s that much better. Just outside of downtown.

Unique Experience and Free Parking
Aug 2019
We spent two nights at McMenamins Kennedy School on a recent trip to Portland and then spent two additional nights at a hotel in downtown Portland. This proved to be the perfect balance since the Kennedy School is exceptionally unique but is lacking in some of the luxuries of a higher end hotel. The location is also far enough from downtown that it is not walkable, but the free parking makes this an awesome deal considering parking at most of the downtown hotels is $40 per night! The bathrooms are small and the beds are not the most comfortable, but the resort more than makes up for it in its uniqueness with the old school chalkboards in the rooms and the charm of the restaurant and bars. The Boiler Room is a particularly great bar with pool tables and shuffleboard. The Soaking Pool is essentially a giant hot tub and although it was crowded at times, was extremely enjoyable. We also took advantage of watching a free movie (free to hotel patrons) during our stay and the theater seating with loveseats and tables was amazingly comfortable. Although not the most comfortable room I've ever stayed in (the room was a little warm and did not have an adjustable thermostat), it was truly a very fun and unique experience and is worth a stay during your Portland visit.

It's hard to describe the amazing restoration of the building and the creativity of the artists and workers.
We always enjoy going to McMenamins and this one is certainly one of our favorites.

Strange place, average pub food
Jun 2019 • Friends
This is an interesting concept the McMenamins brothers have been realizing in Oregon and Washington turning abandoned buildings into something useful in an unconventional way. The Kennedy School has become a pub/brewery/hotel with a pool, with a gym where they can have very loud entertainment, a nice garden etc. The décor is unpretentious pub interior. On a Thursday night we had to wait about 40 minutes for a table which was unoccupied all the time. Service was slow to come, but it was very nice and polite. The food was average, I had the fish and chips from the special menu, it was all right, but nothing special. The beer selection is excellent, and they have the ‘flight’ – six small glasses of different beers if you want to experiment more than just one kind. Prices are reasonable.
