As others have said, this area is run down and downright dangerous. Almost all storefronts are boarded up and there are homeless people everywhere. The Portland tourist Board should make it clear that this is not a place for visitors to come. Such a shame that they have let it come to this - Old town used to be such a neat area. I hope the government does something to revive it. Until that happens, stay away.

Confirmed July 2024, this is a landmark flanked by street people. Not a suitable tourist destination.
I was walking through between Powell's (great!) and the theatre district (empty but clean during the day). Other workday citizens were also passing through, so it's not like I was in any danger, but it would certainly be unpleasant to take visitors here etc.
The conditions in Portland are completely mixed but improving, so I will be interested to check back in a year to see how the area is doing.

The saddest part of Portland and terribly frightening to walk through. I’ve seen this beautiful district in decline since before covid started. I used to be able to at least walk through it when going from point A to point B.
I have spent so much money I don’t have, even gone without internet bc it was not worth keeping my wifi to have to risk possibly it all, just by walking thru this filth. At the very least it is a serious risk to one’s health, as the fent blowback, urine, human waste, and other fluids literally flow down the drainage pipes that were once built to catch and collect water. I suppose the buggest risk though would be death, i’ve always grown up in rough places I’ve mostly lived in rough places, so I feel very “Karen“ for saying this but i believe it’s a serious risk that you die walking through is area. you never know how much meth someone has taken how long they’ve been up how crazy they are, or how I need they are for fix, the people using aren’t really true people they’re not who they actually are when they’re using these people will kill you if it serves them in their state of psychosis, however drug induced and intended it may be.
Ugh I miss enjoying my walks through here. I miss so many places that I once could enjoy without fear. This section is possibly the most heartbreaking.

There was nothing to see beyond the entrance gate. I went on a weekday afternoon and the area was completely deserted and scary. Lots of homeless people and drug dealers. Stay away from this part of the town, especially if you are travelling alone.

Portland is supposed to be such a wonderful place but I hated the Chinatown area. What a seedy mess. Portland is doing nothing notable to address its widespread homeless problem and the area is littered with gentlemen clubs, which creates the impression that this is a haven for prostitutes and low lifes. Unfortunately, one of the great tourist meccas, the Lan Su Chinese gardens is stuck inside it.

Chinatown Gate built in 1986 marked the entrance of a historic Chinatown which no longer exists in spirit. The area once had Chinese grocery stores, a church, Chinese language school, family associations club houses and housing has dwindled to three unremarkable restaurants. The Asian community has migrated to southeast district of Portland. Spread along SE 82nd Streets for a couple of miles are the stores, restaurants and bakeries which one normally find in the old Chinatown. The area is pan-Asian with popular Chinese, Vietnamese, and southeast Asian stores and restaurants.
The first Chinatown was vacated because of a historic flooding along the river banks and pressure by white businesses to claim the land for the expanding financial district. The second Chinatown was abandon because it was too inconvenient after people moved to the suburbs and the area was taken over by the homeless. Next to the Chinatown gate is a city-sanctioned fenced-in area where the homeless can sleep for the night and use the portable toilets. The homeless who do not want to sign in to sleep are sleeping in the street day and night. The stench of urine on the sidewalks on a hot day is overwhelming and having to walk around shirtless men sprawling on the sidewalk is annoying. The area around the Chinatown Gate represents a failure of Portland's progressive social welfare program.
Not really in historic Chinatown but worth seeing is the Lan Su Chinese Garden.

The gate itself is pretty spectacular but lies on the edge of a very sketchy neighborhood full of homeless and drug dealers. Chinatown has been abandoned by Portland's Chinese community so the only thing left is the Chinese Garden, well worth a visit, if you can make your way through all the riff raff.

What did Portland do to its Chinatown? Everything that I remember from when I was a kid is gone or really run down. Now it's full of homeless, drug users, and alcoholics, not that it wasn't before but now it's worse. Sad that Portland would let this happen. The only thing to actually see in Chinatown is the Lan Su Garden. If you want an actual Chinatown, you might want to visit San Francisco.

This must have been a nice neighborhood before it went downhill. There are very few Chinese here now. Mostly what you see are people living in plastic bags and panhandling for quarters. Don’t worry though. They hardly have energy for that. Mostly they just stand around yelling at each other, completely oblivious of the few pedestrians passing by who actually have a few quarters in their pockets.
If you want to get out of the rain, you’ll find an abundance of sleazy strip joints that would probably welcome you, or not. Probably not. The whole neighborhood reeks of indifference.
This must have been a nice neighborhood once upon a time, and a great source of culture and revenue for Portland. I feel badly for the enterprising Americans who had to abandon it. I wonder about the city leadership that allowed this to happen.
It's creepy. Everything about it
Keep moving folks. There’s nothing to see here.
