The Bagdad theater has a unique feel from any other theater I have been to. It has a very large screen (which is really nice in this day and age) and it also has a balcony. If you sit in the balcony they will wait on you which is a nice perk.

When writing reviews for travelers, as I assume most people do on tripadvisor, I would rarely suggest to people to go to the movies. As most theaters do not add to the experience of a place, I would usually say the movies are best left for those non travel days. The Bagdad, is among those theaters that are an exception.
The old theater has history to back it up, greatly redone in the hippy inspired McMenamins' artistic way. It has been upgraded and is now showing new movies, so one can no longer catch as cheap a movie here, but the price is no worse then normal. So if the rain is just a bit to much during your Portland visit, stop here for a movie in comfort with some locally brewed McMenamin's beer to help out.
As a side note, there is only one theater here so one movie at a time. Therefore, it helps to check the schedule although I would suggest don't be afraid to check out a movie you would not otherwise see. Again, this is about checking out the atmosphere and history, not just the movie.

This theatre of the once famous Laurelhurst Neighbourhood always reminds me of where the families during the earlier era spend their good times watching movies...The entrance of the theatre at night surely brings you back memories when gas was less than a dollar per gallon...The colonial style of architecture is prevalent in this structure...Its nice to take a glimpse of the past sometimes...

We ordered our tickets for the 7pm show online. Getting our seats was a breeze. The seats are comfortable and there is a bar available. Great place to see a movie.

What a grand theater venue! It's huge and clean and classy. The popcorn was super! Order food & drink for balcony viewing/eating. Great seats. First rate audio/video/ambience/presentation. Also adjoins McMenamin's Bagdad Pub, if you want just the pub experience before or after dinner.

This place is so amazing! You can eat in the restaurant while another movie is playing then go to your movie. They only play 1 movie at a time & the place is huge! You can get pitchers of beer at the theater & since there’s only 1 movie playing, if you have to get up to use the bathroom or get more beer, all the speakers are playing the movie so you don’t really miss much. You can go to the bathroom & still here what’s going on!!!!! They have a huge balcony as well as huge floor. We saw Black Panther in the middle of the day on a weekday & practically had the place to ourselves & got perfect seats with a lil table for our beer & popcorn.

Saw the minions here this summer. I hadn't been to this theater since Brook Shields was in Blue Lagoon. They have preserved and maintained its history so well.
Great to have food delivered and to be able to have drinks too. Just a fun place.
Big drawback.....Parking.

The building is incredible. Gorgeous! It has a small bar in the front of the theater. You can order food, drinks and beer from their limited menu. When ordering food, you get a number and they bring it to your seat in the theater. There are small board tables in front of your seats for your drinks and food. We sat in the balcony and it was great. My teenagers loved it. the picture quality of the movie was really good and sound was good.

A gem in the heart of SE Portland on Hawthorne Ave. this is kitschy neighborhood full of life with the Bagdad a center piece.
No one under 21 without a parent. You can get standard concession center fare on the main level or go up to the balcony where you will be served y the three restaurants in the building.
Beautiful architecture, great food and drink and first run movies - the cost of admission just $9.00

What a combo! Who thinks of these things? Genius... The movies may be older, but they usually pick the best ones.

Am I allowed to bring outside food (not sold in the theater) to the theater?
