Considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty in all four seasons. In Spring of 2017, the Garden opened its new Cultural Village, complete with new garden spaces, classrooms, exhibition and gallery space, and the Umami Cafe.

We visited the Portland Japanese Garden on a beautiful Sunday evening. The gardens are amazing seem to be as authentic as they could possibly be. It's a bit of a hike up to the gardens, but they offer a shuttle that can drive you up....More

We were able to get a cultural pass from the library. Parking can be a challenge, but don't give up. There's a larger parking lot next to the Rose Garden and street parking. The garden was beautiful with many scenes to enjoy. We were surprised...More

Despite being under construction, I felt calm and relaxed in this beautiful setting. The azaleas are gorgeous right now, but even if there was nothing in bloom, I would return. Lovely paths lead through mossy areas and water features - my favorites. There is a...More

If not for the construction outside the entrance gate and down on the road this would be a 5+ star rating. I love the serenity and ambiance of this garden. The zen gardens and the pond along with the plants make this a must see....More

The potential of a lovely visit was most certainly there as we parked our car at the base of the hill. Once reaching the top, my excitement began to wane. Cranes crashing about just feet away from the zen gardens seemed like a big joke...More

Many people comment that Portland's Japanese Garden is more authentic than San Francisco's. I cannot confirm that statement as I have only been to Portland's. Right now there is a lot of construction going on that has eliminated the roadway up from the parking lot...More

This is very nicely done, mature, Japanese garden with the bonus that the Portland Rose Garden - which is free - is across the street from the parking lot, so you get two for one. I wouldn't recommend for kids.

The Japanese garden doesn't have a lot of deciduous trees. There are some (like Japanese maples, which don't offer a lot of fall color). I think Fall is a nice time to visit the Japanese Garden, because crowds will likely be... More
