Our group (15) of older adults spent a wonderful 90 minutes walking under the streets and businesses of Pendleton, Oregon, as well as visiting some of the historic buildings in the town. The tour was well worth the fee of $20, and our tour guidem Matt, was very knowledgeable and imparted interesting historic aspects of Pendleton. This is a MUST SEE if you're visiting Pendleton.

Enjoyed it overall. Some interesting information and history. Especially liked the cozy rooms part and I wish we had more access to the rest of the underground.

Everyone on the tour wore masks, but the guide had the smallest plastic mouth shield possible (no cloth mask). Take that as good or bad, depending on your viewpoint.

Also, FYI, racism against the Chinese is talked about and for some people, the way it is presented, might come across as insensitive.

Not a bad tour or experience (for me) - just wanted to give people a heads up about some issues that they might want to consider.

The Pendleton Underground Tour is a nearly 2 hour tour of above and below ground history. The price is $20 and it is best if you book your spot in advance. The tour covers a pretty large cross section of old west history. There are underground bars, speak easy, Chinese businesses and opium den, food storage, and business passages. The above ground portion focuses on a brothel tour. This was an excellent and well informed tour. Pendleton is an American West town and this tour represents that well. I recommend this tour and it is one of the best attractions in the region.

This was one of the tours offered from our cruse ship. The place is interesting and has good knowledgeable guides. There were many businesses underground. the town was an R&R hangout for rich drunk workers. All of the 34 Brothels were located on the second floor so patrons had too go through existing businesses on the first floor. there are spiked fences below each second floor window to deter interlopers. There were also 42 bars in town. The tour was interesting but I was not very impressed. It had low ceilings cramped doors and in some places was musty.

Don't miss this tour! So many interesting facts about early Pendleton. Our guide, Kricket, did an amazing job and the gift shop is worth looking at. If you do one thing in town, make sure this is at the top of your list. It's right in the middle of town so park by the Heritage Museum/ Chamber of Commerce and explore the downtown area. It's worth your time.

I understand that this country has a dark racist past and it was present in Pendleton. I was especially furious at the guide who explained that “ even though African Americans and Chinese weren’t allowed to go in to town after sundown and in the day ONLY if they were working for some slave owner, that the main Chinese laundry owner lived in a penthouse! They considered living in a pent house being underground 22 hours a day getting light end oxygen pumped down there being terrorized every day by white racist farmers and cowboys and when it flooded due to rain having your own separate place to endure flash flooding that killed many Chinese workers who were discarded with less dignity than a dog would get. Shame on you!!!!!

The guide was very informative as he explained the history of the ‘back rooms’ and the hidden historical treasures of Pendleton’s yesterdays. From the days of settlements to the days of Opium dens under the respectable shops to the north so respectable brothels our guide told the story with humor and as well as answered questions. Money and time we’ll spent.

The tour was great! The guide was really knowledgeable and fun. My only complaint is that the tour group was way too big. It was difficult to see everything or to even be in the same area when she was speaking about stuff. It really took away from the experience.

Very impressed with the story telling connections to the various underground rooms unearthed through the years. This tour has come a long way from its humble beginnings decades ago. Appreciate addressing the mixed past that led to the need to create an extensive town under the surface.

My adult siblings and I had a great time on this tour. Our guide Jackie knew a lot and seemed passionate about passing it along. When you’re on the tour keep in mind that not everything happened at the same time in history. That was confusing for me at first. The video at the beginning was clearly made in the 80s or 90s so don’t let that influence how you feel about the tour. It was terrific!
