Wanted to stick close to home for the 4th, our normal lake we go to the campsites were already full so we decided to try howard prairie when we found a couple campsite vacancies. The campground its self was nice and well taken care of. Our 2 campsites were large and easily accommodated all 16 of us and beautiful view overlooking the lake . The reason for the low score is the lake... they are working on the dam so let out a large percentage of the water. This led to a lake that was not clean enough we would let any of the kids(7-17 year olds) swim in because of the water quality. It also made for disappointing fishing from shore. 5 days and only a few bites and 2 catches of fish too small to keep. Every one we talked to said the same. We even hiked down to the dam where the deeper water is... 5 hours...nothing for 7 of us. I would like to come back when the lake is full

I have been going to Howard Prairie lake since I was a kid and still enjoy a day there. It has changed quite a bit over the years as different owners have made improvements. The restaurant and store have been updated as well as new bathrooms added. The camping is crowded and can get noisy on weekend nights but a quick get away or campout with friends is always fun there. The kids especially look forward to soft ice cream cones in the store after dinner. There is a marina with boat rental, gas, firewood, and other fishing supply purchase or rental. There is hiking trails around the lake that are easy for all ages but not doable for a wheelchair. With the lake only a 20-25 minute drive from I-5 out of Ashland Or I would recommend camping here on a vacation trip through Oregon. It is also a central jump off spot to other hiking or exploring of the area.

As long-time residents not far from Howard Prairie Lake, we can say that for a quick trip or camping at a lake in a forest, this is a good choice. The only down side is the level of the lake...depending on how the yearly rainfall is going and the letting out of water for the Talent Irrigation Ditch, it can be anything from full and bountiful to real low, tending toward algae and kinda sad. You can camp..you can rent a boat...you can swim..you can fish...you can get a decent burger in the Camp store and their soft-serve ice cream is pretty decent.

What at one time was a beautiful man made lake is now nothing more than a low water mud hole...no docks or boat ramps available and what fish are left are in poor condition. With this years lack of rain(past few years as well) have made this one time recreation destination a bust.
