Annual Experience
Jul 2021
We go every year in early July. Our fly fishing group has its annual outing here, The Lake is beautiful and the fishing is good. It can be windy in the afternoons but always a fun place to be. Two rustic resorts and three or four boat launching sites. Its a National Park so remember your Pass.

One of 2 lakes in the caldera
Jul 2021
East lake is inside the Newberry Caldera in the national Monument. It was very busy with a lot going on in a small area. There is a small motel they call a resort. There is a boat ramp and activities on the lake. People everywhere. Pretty lake.

Fabulous family time
Jun 2021
Fantastic for a simple vacation! Clean, older cabins came well equipped. Staff was friendly and energetic. No internet or phone service which was wonderful! Fishing was excellent.........grandkids caught 18 inchers off the shore with worms!

Bugs, Bats and Burgers
Jul 2020
The water was full of seaweed. There was an overwelming stench of sewer water. Rented a boat for fishing.. That was fun until they told us not to actually consume the fish due to mercury levels.

Cabins are outdated. no screens on windows. swarms of bugs, bats divebombing your head every evening. Our two story cabin was unbearable in the evening (all the kids sleept downstiars in sleeping bags.)

woke up to to a disgusting layer of bugs covering every possible surface.

All in all, lake water not swimmable, food is mediocre, cabins need a LOT of work. Please just at least keep the bugs and the bats out.

Scenic Mountain Lake in Volcanic Caldera
Jul 2019
We drove up to East Lake while visiting Newberry Volcanic Monument. It's a pretty mountain area with opportunities for camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, swimming and hiking. Requires $5 day-use fee or recreation pass. We visited in July and there weren't many people there at all, it was quiet and peaceful.

East lake
Aug 2019 • Couples
You can never go wrong with a drive to East Lake! It's beauty never disappoints. In late spring you'll see remnant's of ice and snow with a cold crisp wind blowing over the lake. In early fall it's mild and beautiful. In summer it's just plain gorgeous!

Terrific surprise!
Aug 2019
We didn't know a thing about East Lake and the Newberry caldera before we started our plans for an Oregon vacation, and this was the biggest, best surprise of the trip. The caldera is comparable in size and origin to Crater Lake, but the cinder cone is in the middle, splitting the basin into two lakes, and a break in the western edge allows water to drain rather than filling the basin entirely.
Less dramatic from lake level than Crater Lake, but more to do and fewer people who are in on the "secret" (it's been a tourist destination for more than a century, and obsidian source for native Americans for centuries).

Trout are a jumpin’

I had a blast fishing with my son and grandson last week for half a day and we caught more than enough legal rainbows to feed our group of 8 back at our Sunriver lodging. We had a blast and what a true beautiful and serene setting!

Super Fun Lake
Aug 2019 • Family
My family really enjoyed the lake. We visited for my daughter’s birthday and had a truly awesome day. Rent a boat and explore the lake. You won’t be disappointed.
