The Wallowa Valley is well off the beaten track but has been discovered a bit by a thriving arts community. Those that really gave birth to that have formed the Josephy Center which is a gallery/museum/teaching place for the arts. It is in a pretty modern ex-bank building that is quite attractive.

The docents are helpful and friendly and the exhibits change. Plus they sent us to a great local coffee/tea shop in the area. Really glad we stopped.

When in the valley you can see why the Nez Pearce were so pissed about getting kicked out! The sort of place you want to figure out how you could stay and live there.

The Josephy Center is a good place to start your visit to Wallowa County. It offers a great place for visitors to learn more about the Nez Perce (a truly noble people) and Oregon history. The Center also offers excellent rotating art shows, competitions, and displays. The docents are friendly and varied in their interests and knowledge of art.

The Josephy Center is also an outstanding place for the community to gather, take art and yoga classes, and learn about local culture and the bigger world from a variety of brown bag presentations. We thank the Josephy Center donors and staff for their kind assistance and willingness to build real community.

We came from out of town to participate in the Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts. As an add on to the show we did a two day plein air paint out and had a show and reception at the Josephy Center. It was a really nice building heavily used by the community. The reception was very nice and I sold a painting. People in this town all have a real sense of community. One lovely surprise was walking into Michael Koloski studio which is open for observation. The lights come on and there is a sign letting you know you can respectfully take a peek around his studio.

This is a beautiful building with a lovely gallery of local artwork, and a great mission. They offer art classes for kids and adults, speakers, films. And yoga, too! Definitely worth checking the schedule when visiting Joseph.

The Josephy Center, named for noted historian Alvin Joseph, Jr. who wrote extensively about native americans, include the difinitive book on the Nez Perce Indians, is a wonderful arts center. Monthly exhibits, lectures, classes for young and old, beginner and experienced artists, are just some of the wonderful events held in a lovely log building, just on the edge of downtown Joseph.

You pick up some local history, see local art and fresh eggs at this gem of a museum/gallery. Luckily, this was the first place we visited in Joseph. The folks there were able to give us tips on things to see and do in town.

On our first visit many fine fotos of river rafting, an exciting local attraction, were hung. The second day there was a plein air exhibit of recently completed paintings. Interesting exhibit and books by Mr. Josephy who was very well informed about local indigenous cultures.

The actual exhibit looked very interesting, but the docents were very very loud and enthusiastic in talking to other guests. We had to walk out the door...

Beautiful space and thoughtfully curated. Great deal of history and a small library upstairs. The building itself is wonderful as well.
