Oh the Painted Hills are extraordinary. Very easy to access and you can drive all the way and there is a nice walk where you get to see more colors and photo opportunities are just great.

The Painted Hills area is spectacular - IF you're there at the right time of day. Sunrise, sunset, or the hour after sunset - this is when the colors are the very best. Sadly, there are those who think that the rules about walking on...More

We really enjoyed the visitor center. Lots of fossils, good explanations, and a chance to see a working lab up close. I would definitely visit again.

Fossils from 40 million years ago. Landscape is varied and unusually beautiful. Sites are well labeled and well maintained. We spent four days driving a circuit from Redmond to Fossil to Mitchell and back to Bend. Accommodations are basic, and that's part of the fun.

I honestly don't know. Your best bet is to call the Monument's Visitor Center or perhaps the community of John Day's visitor center or Chamber of Commerce.
