Give it more time than you expect
I didn't do a lot of research for this park after reading a review saying the shipwreck was mostly covered. We may not have gone to the park, except that they sell the 5-day coastal pass. The Lewis & Clark Nat'l Park didn't sell them and we wanted to use the pass there. Since we were there, we decided to do a quick tour. We were pleasantly surprised by how much of the shipwreck was visible. Turns out that it varies, depending on the seas/shifting sands. We also lucked out because pelicans travel through the coast in September, and a huge flock was hanging out by the shipwreck while we were there. Since we were in the park, we went to other sections. The jetty observation tower was closed (renovations?), but I was glad to be able to see a lighthouse across the water at Cape Disappointment (best to view with a strong zoom or binoculars). The small museum in the historic district is interesting; wish we'd had more time; same with all the old bunkers/cannons/military remnants.

Went to photograph the Peter Iredale, very busy.
As avid photographers, my partner and I headed to Fort Stevens State Park to get some shots of the Peter Iredale. It was a Sunday evening and I expected the place to be someone relaxing. It was not. We had to park a good distance down the road and walk up to the beach, which was still packed. I guess I didn't quite get that the wreck was right at a big parking lot/beach entrance, so there were a bunch of people all around the wreck at all times. I did manage some good photos, but was a bit disappointed that I didn't do enough homework to know that you go there very early to get the best shots and sunset shots at the wreck are probably always busy in the summer. Still cool to see it in person though.

    Nice, but lot of constructions
Lot C (south jetty) and lot D (Columbia river beach access areas are under construction. But in a lot D, the wildlife viewing bunker is still open. And very nice quiet area especially for picnic with children.

I am not sure why the even both leaving lot C open; when you get there the entire parking lot is surrounded by barb wire, so you can do nothing by parking in Lot C. Lot D was a little better but the path outside the barb wire is narrow and winding and eventually leads to the river. We eventually went to Lot B, where you could climb up on the dune and see both the Columbia River and the Ocean.

I am writing this review because while I knew that the observation tour was closed in C, I don't think that the park website does a good job of explaining just how much is inaccesible due to construction.

Obviously there are other things that people like at this park, but my son really wanted to see the Columbia flowing into the ocean, and ideally see the bar crossing.

This park offers a variety of things to see and do. It contains the northwest corner of Oregon, where the Columbia enters the Pacific Ocean (although we weren't able to find a way out on Clatsop Spit due to construction). There are also beaches, as well as a small lake and a campground. We spent a morning here seeing a few sites and hiking and enjoyed the visit.

On this visit to Astoria/Warrenton I drove over to Ft. Stevens a place where we camped in our motorcoach from 1998 - 2017. We always stayed in Space A-10 which fit our 40 foot Monaco motorcoach, had access to the southwest sky for satellite TV and was relatively sunny in case the sun appeared which can be rare. Ft. Stevens has many camping sites, but reserve months in advance since it is very popular. You are walking/biking distance from Battery Russell, wreck of the Peter Iredale, Coffenbury Lake and other fun sites. I have been to all 50 states and Ft. Stevens, the forestry workers and all the volunteers are second to none! My absolute favorite camping area! Make sure to camp on Labor Day weekend because there are Civil War re-enactments and a parade through the campsites hosted

Coastal batteries are always similar, but unique. Fort Stevens, the only battery to be shelled by the Japanese Empire in WWII via a submarine, is maybe more unique.

For a reasonable daily fee, $5, there’s ample things to see, learn, and explore. Plus, it’s got wonderful trails around the Columbia and Young’s Bay, making it a great location for a family day outing.

So lovely to take a trip to Fort Stevens State Park. The waterfront was clean. It was so special to see the ship that ran aground, the driftwood and the flora that was growing at the shore. Our only disappointment was that we could not access the jetties as they were under construction. We found a way to travel along the fences and find remote places that the park had to offer.

We visited the Fort Stevens area where they had military installations from the Civil War to World War II. We found it interesting to see the different installations from different time periods. There is also beautiful views of the mouth of the Columbia River, a small but interesting museum, and a frisbee golf course.
We chanced upon Civil War reenactors camped out there, and our kids absolutely loved spending time with them.

Huge 4900 acre park that was once a military installation. The fort has been turned into a museum, and it's worth a walk around the grounds. The park is ginormous with so many hiking trails and a beach with a shipwreck--what's left of it, anyway. I would come to Astoria for the park and to walk around Fort Stevens. Otherwise, we thought Astoria was a letdown.

A terrible waste of time. The Oregon state park service should be ashamed of themselves. The entire park is not taken care of, lacks safety precautions and is dangerous in some parts of the park. Walk ways, paths etc are uneven, many trip hazards. The Portable toilets are extremely dirty, many lacking toilet paper and are simply disgusting.
All of the buildings have been allowed to degrade with time and the elements. They are also overgrown with wild vegetation.
There are absolutely no information boards or placards at any of the buildings, or the ship wreak.
This leaves you with the feeling of having come a long way to simply see something with no context. In no way is it educational or even enjoyable because you have many questions but no answers.
Save your time and simply search for the photos of the park online. You might actually learn more and see more than in person.

My husband and I have camped at Fort Stevens several times in the past two years and it has become one of our favorite "go to" places on the beach. The park has a little bit of everything--hiking trails, biking trails, beach, historic monuments, the jetty, and one of the largest campgrounds in any Oregon state park including yurts and cabins. In the off season, it is easy to get a site on short notice, but for the summer season, it is best to plan far ahead to get a camping site. Some of the sites are very private and some are not. We love this park where we can plan a "stay-cation" weekend. However, nearby Astoria has plenty to offer with restaurants, museums, and shopping. The Peter Iredale shipwreck is still listed as one of the top sights at Fort Stevens, but not much remains now. However, the beach will always be there. Life is good on the beach!
