The Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum in Florence, Oregon, will open its doors to the public for the first time on July 4th, 2015. I am a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) and through that and other organizations got word that the community of Florence, Oregon led by veterans and veterans groups in the area, was in the process of creating a military heritage museum. At that time the project was already five years old and the museum building had only just been completed. Most of my fellow MOPH members had been to one or more military museums but none of us had been to one as it was still being assembled and we thought it would be interesting to take a look and talk to the people involved, and ask what and who were the drivers behind the idea? How were decisions being made? Where did the funds come from? What was the vision for the museum? Several of us decided to go to Florence to take a look and ask a few questions. We found that there was only one answer to all the questions.
This museum is being built by the members of a community who want to make sure that there will be somewhere that reminds people of the place of the military in the history of our country and it is being built almost 100% with the sweat equity and donations of the community. So, when you go for your own visit you will find a museum smaller than you may have imagined, not filled with endless displays of military “stuff” in glass enclosed displays. This museum is creating what you might think of as a series of movie sets dedicated to several eras and events in our military history. They are beautifully done and expertly presented. The section devoted to the First World War is a set depicting the trench warfare of that conflict. The WWII area has wall mural replicas of some of the iconic posters from that time. This is intended to be something of a “hands on” museum.
Having seen the museum just a few weeks before it is scheduled to open I can tell you that it will be a joy to visit and it serves as great example of what can be accomplished by a dedicated community of people.

Thank you so much for your review of Oregon Coast Military Museum, Gary! Now that we're open we hope you'll be back to visit and see even more. We had a V-J Commemorative event and will host a commemorative event on September 18th to recognize POW/MIA Day.
We've tried to get Trip Advisor to correct the spelling to Museum. So far, our requests haven't worked. If there is any way for you to correct it we'll be deeply grateful!

Great museum. Packed with stuff. Civil war to Iraq war. So much stuff to see. We glanced over much and spent an hour. $5 to enter. Less for veterans.

What a wonderful tribute to the Military History we've all been a part of in the USA. I was well impressed with the scenery that accompanies each display period. And done in 5 years with lots of volunteers....even noticed the period correct music playing near the Vietnam Memorial. Make it a stop when you are in town - nice gift shop.....and when combined with the Wings & Wheels Car Show that day - everyone had a good time!

For anyone interested in U. S. military history as it pertains to a given locality (the Oregon Coast), this museum is a little gem. Worth the drive off 101 to visit.

Went with cousin. Both of us were moved by the way the displays were set up. Actually gave you a feel for what it would have been like had you been there. Very moving! Would see again!!

I have been wanting to visit the Oregon Coast Military Museum for some time. I finally got the chance last weekend. I was very impressed with the quality of their exhibits. I walked away feeling that the time I spent there was well spent. I would recommend this as a worthwhile stop to anyone passing through Florence. Also I would recommend a stop in Eugene at the Oregon Aviation & Space Museum.

We had an amazing time here, each war is represented in a separate area little facts and interesting tidbits everywhere. Our favorite was the living history a few veterans were there to tell us some really interesting history. It’s great for all ages.

This small but expanding museum has great displays of American wars, guns, flags, bayonets and more. I definitely recommend this place if you are nearby. There is also a little gift shop. Open 10-5. Cost is $5. Located at the airport.

While this military museum is fairly small, the quality of the displays and write-ups are high. The scene displays consist of mannequins depicted in war situations and are very graphic and realistic in nature. Each station has a set of write-ups in heavy plasticized pages, and each write-up is very well done. Both World Wars are covered as well as Vietnam and reference to other wars. The large map of the Pacific war gives a good perspective along with the plasticized book, as each number on the map corresponds to the number of the write-up. Other displays are also well done.

This is a first class little museum. It's about 11/2-2 yrs. old and are adding things weekly. It has a small gift shop and knolegable people who work there. It's well worth the time if you're close by.
