It's SO nice that this river isn't fenced-in, or over-developed on its banks in Eugene. Instead, there are walking trails, an endless bike system with countless bike and pedestrian-only bridges, wild riverbanks, gorgeous trails and islands and sunning rocks. Nature provides superb surprises here.
I have spent a lot of time on the Willamette river tubing and fishng. It's a long river so many different types of water but it is generally user friendly in the summer and warm enough to swim. Good fishing for trout, steelhead and salmon.
The Willamette meanders from the mountains down through the Willamette Valley and up to Portland. You can fish or boat on it, you can swim or White Water Raft on it. Great vacation place. and there are campgrounds on it too.
The Willamette River runs directly through Eugene and offers endless entertainment opportunities!
We often bike on the river paths which border the river on both sides.
