Very special environment of high grass prairie. The wildflowers were beautiful on our hike on Patti's trail. There are three other hikes-people are allowed in certain areas. We got wonderful information for our 3-4 hour adventure from the Enterprise office of the Nature Conservancy.

Definitely worth the drive. There were hardly any other people on the way up there and it was perfectly serene and beautiful at the top. My favorite part of our trip!

Our visit included a walk up the extinct volcano, with stunning 360 degree views of just about everything in the vicinity. While the wildflowers were past their peak, the grasses were lovely by themselves. The trail to the top of the hill gets lost in the tall grass, but isn't difficult for those of average fitness. Access to the trailhead was via a bit of a rough road; taken slowly it was doable with two-wheel drive. Bring a lunch and stay a while. The Nature Conservancy has done a fantastic job here.

Remote huge prairie Preserve with outstanding 360 degree views of the Wallowa Mountains and the 7 Devils Mountains in Idaho. The Gravel access road is rough - not recommended for passenger cars - but SUVS & trucks OK.

Zumwalt is an easy drive from Joseph. All but the last mile on well graded gravel roads. Vast vistas from the 33000 acres of grasslands. Nature Conservancy and local ranchers keep this pristine spot accessable

This is one of the natural beauties that is amazing when you consider all of the history in the area. I will say- if you are expecting to be “entertained” by more than the gorgeous landscape and occasional cow, don’t addd this to your iten. At times, the map and signs were somewhat confusing about which roads we were allowed to travel and which were not permitted. Overall, it was a nice afternoon drive.

We just got through spending three days here. This is particularly a wonderful place for birds. Lots of predators including Golden Eagles. Many many small birds, very noisy but often down in the grass, probably eating and staying out of sight of the predator birds. Many cute ground squirrels. Elk. And at this time of year, great wildflower display.

Expansive views of mountains, valleys, prairies and endless skies reminds me of how absolutely gorgeous our world is and how small i am in the universe. Yet my job, as I see it, is to respect this wondrous land and educate others to its importance to ALL lives, past and future.

We drove across this prairie heading for the Buckhorn overlook of Hell's Canyon. Takes about 2 hours from Enterprise. The road became gravel pretty soon, and it is washboard. My husband knew that 45 mph will smooth out the bumps. It's a lonely, lovely ride in early October. A few pickups and some cattle. This is a better road to Buckhorn than the Forest Service road out the other side.

The drive to the Zumwalt will reward you with views of farms and ranches, rolling hills and, finally, a prairie experience not found many places in this country. Bring binoculars and good shoes. The roads are gravel and a bit unkept but worth every effort to see the area.

What is the average temp in mid June? That is about the only time we can go. Do think you flowers will still be in bloom?

I was there June 7th, 2014. It was warm and pleasant. There were still plenty of wildflowers and the grasses were green. Truly spectacular.
