Breathtaking

Only saw a portion of Hells Canyon and it was breathtaking! There is so much to see in this part of the country. Makes you go back in time.

Taking the road over the Zumwalt Prairie starting south of Enterprise, we drove about 2 hours to the overlook. The road is mostly washboard gravel, but if you go 45 mph, it smooths out. The overlook into Hell's Canyon is wonderful. The actual Snake River is past a ridge across the way, but there is plenty of canyon to see.... More

The area is beautiful and viewpoints wonderful. The viewpoint is a perfect spot to see the canyon. The road is paved. It appears to be an old logging road that has been upgraded and paved. There is a gravel road from the viewpoint that might be worth exploring. As we had been here previously, we didn't take the time to... More

We rode up the Snake River some 50 miles, into some of the Hells Canyon area. The wonder of traveling the river is that you get to see the canyon walls up close. The way the basalt columns froze and twisted is clearly visible. It is a wondrous place.

Loved the drive, it changed a lot and gave something for everyone. The Snake river park had a great swimming hole and the overlook was amazing. So glad we took the time to take the drive.

Spend at least a full day, or preferably two days, on a trip round this scenic byway. Hells Canyon itself rivals the Grand Canyon (IMO).

We traveled all around the area: Hells Canyon Dam, Hells Canyon Overlook, Joseph, Imnaha, Halfway, Elgin, Brownlee, Oxbow, Joseph Canyon Overlook, Enterprise. Just when we thought it couldn't get anymore beautiful it did. This is a trip you must take if you like scenic roads with very little traffic. Most of the roads were paved and well maintained. Any people... More

This is such a lovely area and well worth coming to. The higher elevations are still too cold to camp for my taste but there is plenty to keep one occupied - tons of trails and camping and above all water recreation.

The drive through the canyon is well worth the trip. Camp sites are well maintained. Fishing is great.

We spent a day this autumn driving from Joseph, Oregon to Imnaha, then via a gravel road that was about 30 miles - maybe more - into the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Of course, it was slow going and our car was filthy when we returned to Joseph. It is a beautiful drive with pull-outs along the way. Leaves... More
