A window on the mining history of the area

We enjoyed our visit. We learned about the mining history of this area, which we had been mostly unaware of. There are guides there to help answer questions or explain exhibits. The museum is not real big but there are enough items and pictures on display to give you a feel for the heyday of gold mining in Oregon. Admission is free with donations encouraged.

Just happened to see the museum as I was leaving the nearby Bohemia Park, didn't even know the museum existed. It's located on the bottom floor of the Square Dancing building.

I went in, was greeted by volunteer Perry, and invited to look around. It's not a huge museum but it is impressive with the amount of artifacts and nicely displayed. Perry was visiting with some other guests so I walked around viewing the displays. Each item has an information card, approx date of use, and who donated the it.

There is everything from drills, hammers, an ore cart with rails, gold stamp mill, sieves, ore cradles, (all the tools) rocks, and items the miners used to basically live and mine. There is even a replica of a miners shack. There are pictures upon pictures, maps and news articles everywhere.

There is a quaint grift shop mostly geared towards kids.

For $5 you can actually pan for gold with expert instruction (guaranteed to find gold) you get to keep!

The museum holds a breakfast at the old Bohemia mining area east of town during the Bohemia Mining Days in Cottage Grove mid-July. This year the Bohemia Mining Days is July 13-16, 2017. Google the event for more info.

This is a stop worth making and a museum worth viewing. The volunteers are very passionate and knowledgeable. I highly recommend it!

The museum is open Thursday 1 pm - 4 pm; Friday 1 pm - 4 pm; and Saturday 10:00 am - 4 pm.
