The north Oregon coast was one of the worst for boats/ships and became known as the Graveyard of the Pacific (cant remember where I read that to give the author credit). Because of that it was essential to have lighthouses.
When they decided on Tillamook Rock (which is north end of Cannon Beach) the engineers had just ruled out Tillamook Head. One reason I heard was that they wanted the lighthouse sea level.
So, 1878, this unlikely sea stack of basalt would become the foundation for the lighthouse.
Imagine being the two people first put on the rock. Or the fear when the master mason was swept out to sea, never to be found. Or being the light-keep during the crazy storms and having huge rocks blast the lighthouse and you have no way off.
So, while you cant touch it, what you can do is visually see the distance between land and the lighthouse. And on a good day, you can see the lighthouse in her glory

It's very, very odd to me that this is an attraction. First off, you can't actually GET to the light house, you're just staring at it from miles away while on the Clatsop Loop Trail Hike viewpoint. The best thing about the view is everything else the view has to offer - the beach, the crashing waves, the shoreline, etc, NOT the lighthouse itself. I would absolutely recommend going to the viewpoint to see everything else - but not to see the light house at all. It looks tiny from a distance.

The tour of the lighthouse that is open from 11 am till about 4-5 pm from mid week to Sunday is a must. A senior couple was volunteering at the lighthouse and acted as our tour guides. There were no mandatory entry fee, but donations are welcome to keep the lighthouse going. Learnt so much about the history and design of the lighthouse.

This review is for the hike to the overlook. Two miles from the Cannon Beach area is the entrance to the Ecola State Park. After paying the $5 to get in, rather than taking the left to go towards the Crescent Beach overlook, you take a right at the fork towards Indian Beach. After about 10 minutes on a winding road you get to the trail head.
It took us about an hour to get to the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse viewpoint. Along the way you see markers, some with interesting and relevant information, some that are just plain numeric markers. Note that the markers have numbers that do not match what was on the map we got at the park entrance. But given that there is ample signage and only one trail, it’s virtually impossible to get lost.
Now the lighthouse itself… I wish I could say more. The fog rolled in and we couldn’t see 10’ in front of us. Oh well… next time!

Enjoy the spectacular view of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse from Ecola State Park or Indian Beach.
It's quite historic, and should be included in any excursion to the Oregon Pacific coast.

Although you can't truly go there, it is a very cool lighthouse to see. You don't find many lighthouses sitting out on a rock like this.

I am sure you can see this from several points but we viewed from the Clastop trail. Not very good pictures because I didnt have my zoom lens. Pretty though.

It wasn't difficult to locate the Ecola State Park but be prepared to pay $5 parking fee. But bring your binoculars because that's the only way you'll be able to see the Lighthouse. Thankfully for us the skies were clear. Otherwise, it might be impossible if it were cloudy!

We viewed this lighthouse from several locations, including Ecola State park and Indian Beach, but never realized until we got home and I blew up my pictures that there were sea lions laying all over the rocks!

I had read all about the history of this lighthouse and it fascinated me. In all of my trips to the Oregon Coast I had never even thought to look for it, so this time I made the effort and was glad I did.
You need to go into Ecola State Park ($5 honor system admission) and to the parking area. This is high on a bluff overlooking Cannon Beach. Beautiful views! Very, very windy the day I was there. Be prepared! There are picnic tables here and restrooms.
I wasn't sure where to look at first. I didn't see any signs about the lighthouse (there may have been some, but I didn't see any). There is a trail that went north, but it was closed. Then there was one that appeared to go down to the beach. And then there was a short one to the Cannon Beach overlook. If you head down that way and look to your right you will see the lighthouse. There is a trail off this way to a bluff as well near the restrooms.
It's true that it's not accessible, but that's obvious and I don't feel it should be given a low rating simply for that as others have done. It's beautiful and mysterious. Read up on the history if you haven't. I was so happy to finally get to see it!

Hello,
We're looking to stay in the hiker's camp overnight and are wondering where we can park. We are aware that you can't park overnight within the park boundaries, and were wondering if anyone has found a place to park overnight.
