About
Marvel at the rugged beauty of Cannon Beach against the backdrop of Haystack Rock jutting out of the Pacific coast. Walk on the soft sand all the way to the mouth of Ecola Creek to spot Tillamook Lighthouse at a distance. While you’re at it, don’t miss the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum. You can camp overnight to discover all the attractions in the area; light a bonfire by the beach to stay warm. At low tide, walk out onto the sandbar to get closer to the sea stacks. Visit in June to catch the annual sandcastle contest. – Tripadvisor

- ArdiVancouver, Canada79 contributionsStunning viewsBreathtaking beach with Haystack Rock at its center. It was quite windy and misty (probably due to the heat) when we visited but the views more than make up for it. Close to many restaurants and stores in the town as well.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 13, 2023
- TravellingBritNYSyracuse, New York9,431 contributionsSpectacular BeachVisited on a Friday in September. The weather we almost perfect, not a cloud in the sky, but a cool breeze coming from the North. We parked near the government buildings and walked down. Soft sand above the high tide mark, hard-packed sand below that made walking very easy. Saw a few on Beach Bikes and they were having a great time. Haystack Rock is quite a sight, along with the other jagged rocks sticking out of the water. Very photogenic and a great walk!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 17, 2023
- James cOklahoma City, Oklahoma383 contributionsWonderful beachWe arrived here after exploring ecola state park. I didnt realize cannon beach is a small town, park and you walk to the beach. The day was sunny with a slight breeze, many people there made it better, so you could chill and people watch. The view of haystack rock is the highlight, i photographed it on both sides so you got against the sun and a shadow of it with the sun. This is a really nice place and very clean. We spent about 2 hrs here just strolling the beach and just standing in awe at the surroundings.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 25, 2023
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia19,408 contributionsProbably Oregon's best beachWe parked at the dead end street by the beach in front of a house no one was in. That was enough to see our car from beach while we took a half an hour walk. Beach was beautiful, wide and long, very joyful to walk even with little drizzle. Haystack rock close by, and Tilamook rock lighthouse in a distance - awesomeVisited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 29, 2024
- co27129 contributionsHaystack RockWe spent the afternoon in Cannon beach, public parking was only a block away, walked the beach, HayStack Rock is incredible. We arrived around 3 pm, lots of people but the beach is huge so you don’t feel crowded at all. It’s a must see! We were there May 30th.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 7, 2024
- Have Camera, Will TravelSouth Bend, Indiana3,680 contributionsGood Family BeachThis is definitely the beach to be at with the kids. The sand is nice, it's clean, and it's huge. You have the added bonus of Haystack Rock to look at. With all of the houses and resorts and the busy area in town, this is very much the popular beach town. It was big enough that we had plenty of area to wander around this nobody around. Back home we go to Lake Michigan and when it's summer, the beach is packed. Here, even when it was busy, there was plenty of space.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 19, 2024

Lush greenery everywhere ! Highly recommend spending couple of days for R&R , beachside walks, great hikes ! - nowpackingDallas, Texas3,783 contributionsCannon BeachJust had to make a quick stop at the Cannon Beach to see the famous Haystack Rock. Had to circle back twice to get a parking spot - they are practically nonexistent and I hear they write $50 parking tickets left and right! Just jumped out for a quick stop to snap a few pics even though the light was not good. They really need a solution to the lack of parking! Did see a friendly herd of elk grazing in the nearby yards! Yes it’s huge, but far from our most scenic stop along the gorgeous Oregon coast!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 26, 2024

We stayed here for a weekend during October 2020, at an accommodation right on the beach.
Highly recommended. At least in October, the beach was never overly crowded.
The beach is VAST, both long and deep. It’s wonderful for long walks. It was a photographer’s paradise: the light constantly changed as the weather changed, the sky was big, the beach was full of interesting rock formations that all held fascinating and beautiful forms of intertidal life. The sea breeze and the crashing waves were most relaxing.
This being the (gorgeous, highly recommended) Oregon coast, don’t go expecting lots of sitting in the beach, playing in the water, etc. While you could enjoy some sitting (a few people built small fires at night), this is more of a walking beach. It’s just gorgeous—a real highlight of our time in Oregon.
The town of Cannon Beach is a nice destination, too: some interesting art galleries, some fun touristy shops, and some good restaurants.

Quaint little town on the Oregon coast I can be pricey and very difficult to find lodgings during High season. Booked your hotel months early if you plan on going in the summer. A few decent restaurants and lots of buzzing around. You probably don't need to spend more than one or two days here however

Cannon beach is a wonderful place, very clean and very large beach area. The famous monolith is very picturesque and when the tide goes out you can look for starfish and other creatures in the tide pools near it. The town of cannon beach is really cute too, with candy shops, restaurants and art galleries you’ll have plenty to do off the sand too.

The city of Cannon Beach wants you to fund their town by tricking you into getting a parking ticket. Arriving at 9 am, I found that the public parking (all of the 10 spots) were full. I parked on the street where the curb was green. The only visible sign said "No Double Parking." Upon returning from the beach (BTW, the water is freezing) I was greeted with a parking ticket of $50. What a crock. After much searching, I found a 2 by 3 inch sign 50 feet away that said it was a loading zone. There were probably 30 cars all parked there, each with $50 tickets. Reeks of small town government greed. Also, haystack rock is boring.

We definitely would have enjoyed staying longer at Cannon Beach but parking is very limited. We were able to get out and take a few pictures of the lovely Haystack Rock but the shopping area was extremely crowded with little parking. We went on a weekday thinking we could have more time with less crowding but that was not true.

I loved this beach .. wide open plenty of space to walk .. I would get up early to get my coffee and walk the almost empty beach!
In the evening it gets busier! We loved how you could just dig a hole and light a fire and watch the sunset .. it was the highlight of my trip and we got to see a whale jumping in the ocean❤️

We love all kinds of beaches, but do have our favorites. Cannon Beach is just an enjoyable experience. The beach is so BIG! If you stay down near Webb's Scenic Surf (which I highly recommend), you also get a creek on your beach. Combine the beach with the town and it adds up to one of my favorites places to visit.

Cannon Beach was absolutely breathtaking! Not only was I reliving some of my fondest Twilight Movie scenes, but I was taking in the Pacific Ocean and Mother Nature's landscape. The Haystack Rock, which is the focal point of the beach, was absolutely massive. When I first gazed on it, my heart skipped a beat and I actually said "oh my god!" The shear size of the rock will literally take your breath away. It's like its own unclimable Island. Lol. We got there around 930am on a Sunday, and it wasn't crowded at all. We found parking at the top of the hill and walked it down the boarded steps. People were walking, running, with their dogs, and it was just majestic. I hope to make it back there again! Enjoy the photos. ✌️

Cannon Beach is one of America’s best beach. This towering giant of a rock is fabulously breathtaking! I am amazed by the natural beauty of this place. The entire beach and the reflexion of the wet sand is a natural masterpiece. A must visit place in Oregon.

Unspoiled natural beach, be sure to visit at a low tide to see the beautiful critters in the tide pools near Haystack rock. Sunset is absolutely gorgeous and we were lucky enough to see whales migrating off-shore in mid-July. The sand is packed, so you can walk for miles comfortably.

Are dogs allowed on the beaches in Oregon? Specifically interested in Cannon Beach. Dog would be on leash. Thanks!
Written June 17, 2020
We brought ours last weekend.
We did have several off leash dogs approach us, which was fine but might not be for all dogs.

I am wondering if anyone have tried to take Amtrak from Portland to Cannon Beach? If so, was it worth it? What other things can you do in the area? We don't have a car but would love to visit Cannon Beach.

We used Wildwood Adventures. A small group on a luxury van that stops at the highlights along the coast near Cannon Beach.

We plan on taking a day trip from Porland to the coast, with kids (9 and 7) that do not do well in the car with hills and curves. There are different routes (US26 and OR6) to take, but how are they for kids with motion sickness?
Written July 20, 2019
I guess it really depends where you want to go. Let’s say you want to get to Cannon Beach - then I’d say take 26 all the way. Then you could travel south on 101 to view the coast. It’s easier to pull into the scenic stops if they are on your right. And do pull in, especially after Oswald State Park for those views at the Neahkahnie Viewpoints.
If you are running out of time and need to head back, then pick up 53 and head back to 26. There will be 10 miles of curvy roads. Just take it easy.
If the kids are doing well and you are not done exploring, then head down to Tillamook and back by route 6. Once again, curvy and much longer than 53, but you would be heading uphill, generally, and there are enough passing lanes to avoid becoming the head of the parade.

We're flying into Portland on Sat Aug 3 about 1200. Is there a way to get from Portland to CB?
Written July 10, 2019
Yes,it's not hard. We just used an Oregon Map and followed the best route. We did not go through Astoria although that is an option. I can't remember the names of hi ways...a map will be most useful or Google Map it.We did not go into Portland at all just stayed on the outskirts and had a lot of I 5 traffic. Not sure if this helps. You can do it easily is the main idea.

Heading to Cannon Beach area. Would you recommend going to the part of the beach with Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park with Indian Beach on the same day or do that over two days? I have a nine year old and five year old coming along too.
