A cinder cone. located in the middle of town, 480 ft and a 360 degree view of the Cascade Range, Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint is to not be missed when visiting Bend.Take water & pack it out....leach law of no longer than 6ft. A summit road will take you by car up to the top (closed during the winter) or you can walk the Summit Road Trail along the same road, watch for cars in the summer. Approximately 2 mile round trip by car or on foot. In addition there is a Pilot Butte Nature Trail that begins at the base of the butte on the East side. The Neighborhood Park parking lot, usually very crowded is where the trailheads are located. Lots of dog lovers everywhere. If choosing The Pilot Butte Nature Trail, it goes up steeply which can be challenging but seemingly faster than the Summit Road Trail. It appears the trail of choice for many families and singles. This Pilot Butte Nature Trail has its steep upgrades where sharing the space becomes an issue especially when wet, icy or covered with snow. The trail is dirt with some cinder and is beaten & worn with high foot & animal traffic. It can be very slippery & has been that way most times we have walk it.The trail takes you up the east, north & western side of Pilot Butte. This trail is cool in the summer & cold in the winter with the shade from the Juniper & Ponderosa Pines blocking any southern exposure.Everyone loves arriving at the summit, bathing in the surrounding beauty & historical significance. Open dawn to dusk & free. Restrooms at Summit & trailhead/ Neighborhood Park. Be extremely careful in turning North off Hwy 20 to Arnett Way & follow road onto NE Linnea Dr to find parking lot.

what a great hike, about 3 miles, but the first part out of the parking lot was not paved, but the trail met up with the paved roadway, and it was amazing, steep in parts, but the views were breathtaking, or was that my out of shape body telling me otherwise. this only took about 2 hours, including time at the top for the rest of us to catch out limited breaths. a must do..

Short 1 mile hike to the top of this volcanic cone in the city. Not too steep. Nice 360 degree view of the city and mountains. Two trails - one paved road track and one sandy/gravel so can go up one and down the other. Parking available.

A great little hike to a beautiful view of the Cascade Mountain Range. It was an easy hike and the views were well worth it. We even took a stroller. The locals use this place as a great place to do their walks and jogs and enjoy the views as they exercise. Highly recommended. Very goo parking area, free of charge.

It is easy hike and the views of 360 are just stunning. Great place to enjoy sunset and views. It is easy to get to it and drive all the way up or just hike it.

When I first moved to Bend in 1976 I would go up on Pilot Butte almost every day to eat my lunch and enjoy the view. There was hardly ever anyone else up there because Bend was so much smaller back then. It is now usually closed in the winter, to vehical travel (you can still hike up). Even though it is much more crowded these days it is well were the short drive or hike to the top. It produces quite a panoramic view of the Cascades, Ochocos and surrounding area.

We have been up there a couple of times for Independence Day and the hospital parking lot is a great place for a perfect view of the Bend fireworks.

Was pleasantly surprised by this gem of a park right near the highway. Ample parking near children's play area & green grass field, with circular walking trail which allowed further hikes around the Butte base & to the top. Walks were easy to more difficult on the steep portions, & meandered through wooded areas, or briefly past schoolyards & houses; also offering spectacular scenic distant vistas of snowy mountains.

Pilot Butte is an extinct cinder cone volcano located within the city of limits of Bend, making it one of only four cities in the United States with a volcano within it's boundaries. Most of Pilot Butte is protected as part of Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint. There are two ways to access the summit - hiking or driving. The hiking trail is short, but steep. For those not wanting the challenge of hiking up the volcano, there is also a road to the top. Normally, I would always prefer to hike up a mountain, but we were running short on time when we visited and had a little trouble finding the parking for hiking. Not wanting to miss the sunset, we drove to the top instead. The views from the top are absolutely beautiful. Pilot Butte is the highest point for miles around so great views of the high desert in all directions. As the sun was going down, looking east we could see the immense shadow of the butte. To the west, we could see the sun setting over the Cascade Mountains, including the Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, Mount Jefferson, and even Mount Hood in the distance. It would be hard to beat this spot for watching the sunset, so if you're visiting Bend, don't miss out on Pilot Butte.

Wonderful 360 view from the top! Some people walk from the bottom but you can easily drive to the top of your short on time!
