Cool spot

Great lava cave to go explore close to town. About 1/4 mile deep (at least until some people got claustrophobic... but looks like it goes deeper) with plenty of headroom and fairly good walking surface with a few rock piles to scramble over. Looks like a fun place for kids! Our dogs even went through there, but were happy to get back out to the sunshine. DEFINITELY need a good flashlight or headlamp. Have fun!

Dress warmly, carry headlamps/flashlights, wear rugged foot covering, and use a work helmet/batting helmet/or other head protection for maximum safety and enjoyment. Don't forget your camera and have good directions/coordinates to locate the cave.

So simple, but so cool

Bring a light! A review on here I think confused this location with the Lava River Cave because there is no place to rent here. We overheard there were 40 people in the cave already, but you'd never know it. Cave is too big to feel crowded with even 40 people. Just be warned that there are a couple of tight squeezes and places that require crawling on your stomach, hand, and knees.

Rent the flashlight

We took our 5 and 7 year old here and had a fun time. You have the option of renting a flashlight - do it! We had 1 light from home and phones and all the phones died before we were done and it's dark. You walk into the cave and back out the way you came. It got cold down there too. We went on a hot day, so it felt nice, but I ended up giving my gloves to the kids. You need to dress accordingly.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Jul 2018 • Couples
This cave is located just a short way off China Hat Road and is marked by a railroad rail fence around the entrance. A staircase allows access down into the tunnel. We were there for about an hour and were the only folks in the cave. Be sure to bring a powerful light and water to hydrate with.

Bring a coat!

Defending the steep stairs takes visitors to a frigid, but very interesting experience of walking under a lava flow beneath Bend. Easy walking but bring a headlamp or flashlight.

Interesting Dark and narrow

This was our first lava cave. I am glad we explored this cave. It was totally dark and not very wide but about 2/3 mile in length. There were several areas wheret you had to crawl on your stomach and there were lots of unstable rocks to negotiate. Good thing we wore helmets as there were many low places. Generally a good experience.

Great Ride to a Cool Cave!
Apr 2017 • Couples
This is on the east side of bend off China Hat Rd. We did a 9 mile bike loop by combining a portion of the Coyote Loop Trail, the Boyd Cave cut over, and the Arnold Ice Cave Trail. We parked at the Horse Butte trail head and road clockwise on the loop. Midway through the ride we arrived at Boyd Cave and explored the underground cave via headlamps. The trail was a great bike ride some challenging terrain and fun . The Boyd Cave was a cool (literally) underground cave reached by a ladder. The cave sits in the middle of nowhere and could be easy to miss. We didn't find the Arnold Ice Cave, we will have to save that for another trip!
