About
The Bandon Historical Society was founded in 1976 and is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with the mission of preserving and presenting historical material and artifacts related to the history of the Bandon area. The Society operates the museum at the corner of Highway 101 and Fillmore Avenue open six days a week 10AM-4PM (seven days a week in the summer), eleven months a year. Closed in January. Housed in a former Bandon City Hall, it was the second building constructed after the disastrous 1936 fire. Before moving into the current location, the museum was located in a historic bank building (currently the Masonic Temple) and the old Coast Guard building, now the home of the Port of Bandon. Bandon’s history museum shares the story of a town blessed by water and cursed by fire. Shipbuilding, shipwrecks, fires, beautiful beaches: all are on display. Bring the kids and have them take our History Detective’s Challenge.

This little museum is amazing. It's evident that the historical society loves its little town. There's something for everyone here covering everything related to the area: fishing industry, logging, cranberries, native Americans, medicine, the famous fire of 1936, schools, military, maritime, coal mining, tourism, beaches, etc. Even kids should be entertained. It's a fabulous deal too at only $3 per person.

My husband and I love small-town museums and we have toured many. This one has hit our top 10 list. You enter through a very nice gift shop and can go left or right into separate areas. We went left and meandered a bit before being drawn to some music coming from the back. It brought us to the area devoted to the logging history of the area and the song was "The Frozen Logger" which was so funny, I had to listen to it 3 times and wish I could listen to it again right now. We spent at least 20 minutes in the logging corner looking at artifacts and pictures and reading stories about feats of daring and horrible tragedies. We meandered a little more and finally waddled over to the room on the right and found a wonderful representation of early life in Bandon and its founding families. Of particular interest was the coverage of the 1936 fire that burned Bandon to the ground--many photos, artifacts, newspaper articles and personal recollections. Bandon can be very proud of this museum. It's a credit to the spirit of this small town.

This museum offered so much more than we expected. The displays and information were well laid out. We learned so much about the history and important events that shaped this town.

My three daughters and I passed this museum while walking to old town from our room at Lighthouse Cove Inn. We decided to peak inside, and we were very surprised at what we found. The volunteers were very friendly, and they gave my girls a booklet that had a little scavenger hunt game for the girls to play as they went through the museum. The girls loved it and asked when we could go back. They also had a fun little gift shop. My favorite item was a t-shirt that I bought with a funny little tag saying the shirt was printed by old hippies and it contained a warning not to wash it with my wedding dress! My girls thought that was halarious.

The building misleads one into thinking its not much. The fact is that a great deal of historical information is represented there and it is pretty well described. I do not live in Oregon, but have visited often over the last several and being inquisitive, I thought I was well informed about the area, but I learned a lot in my visit. Well worth the time.

Good place for doing research on this area. Nicely divided by interests and extremely large collection of materials. Knowledgeable volunteers. Almost too much on display so a little overwhelming. Allow lots of time or plan multiple visits. Would have to keep a close eye on children.

This museum has many exhibits, so probably has something for everyone. I was particularly interested in the pictures of the town fire and of their industries (I never knew they did coal mining in the area!) but they also had lots of artifacts from the local Native American tribes and early pioneers of the area. Locals probably will enjoy their collection of Bandon High School yearbooks. Other exhibits not particular to the area included dentist and doctor equipment, home kitchen and sewing, a 1960's theme wall, the Roosevelt Highway, and military history among others.

Good for the whole family but not young children as the exhibits are "hands off" and densely packed.

My daughter talked us into going to this museum. Bandon's history was very interesting and we were surprised that it used to be such a hub of activity. Lot's of cool old tools, cameras, telephones, and medical instruments.
