Our campsite at South Dam campground on Lake Thunderbird was lakeside and shady with a nice breeze. We stayed on a Sunday night. The camphosts were friendly and keep one of the cleanest campgrounds in the park. We use to stay on the other side of the lake but the fights, trash, and general lack of care aren't for us... More

Lake Thunderbird is our local lake. There are lots of negative comments out there about it and some scary stories about vagrants and weird happenings. But really, this is a great area to kick back and relax with your family. My hubby and I launch our kayaks here. He fishes, I paddle around and when I'm tired I ground myself... More

I visited the park after going to Thunderbird falls. The road to get there from Old Glen Hwy is paved and mostly smooth, but you do go up in elevation a lot which means on the way down it is quite steep. There is 1 turn around section on the road that allows you to change your mind else you... More

I wasn't too sure what to expect because I had the impression that my wife and I would have to travel a great distance to find a nice place to camp in our travel trailer. I was pleasantly surprised by the facilities at the Little Axe campground at Lake Thunderbird State Park. It is a limited access area (which means... More

The trails at the lake have always been a nice place to go and get some peace and quiet. The last few times I've gone out I have noticed that the trails aren't as groomed and cut back as they used to be, also my dogs seem to pick up more ticks. I've been a bit disappointed in the maintenance... More

I stayed here with my family for a long weekend trip. We were in my parent's RV so we stayed in the full hook-up site. It was called Hickory Hill. We had a great view and were able to build a fire. There was a lot of lake activity but unfortunately I have a broken ankle so I wasn't able... More

My husband and I stayed at the Little Axe Campground at Lake Thunderbird from Monday to Sunday. We were 1 of 4 campers from Mon-Wed. It was wonderful! Then Thu, about 10 more campers arrived and Fri the campground filled up. People walking between our campfire and our camper (right through the middle), playing ball in and around our campsite... The ranger sent us out for a short hike. After losing the poorly maintained trail, I noticed that the ticks were absolutely unbelievable in number! I pulled NO LESS than 40 off my body, then and for days thereafter. So be forewarned! The trails afford few views of the lake anyway.

This is a popular lake that people come to swim, fish, camp or picnic. The water is red from the clay and will stain clothes, so be aware of that. There are places best for swimming and picnic tables . There are many trees around the lake and you can watch many local birds.
