About
The Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry is an interactive museum where the common person and poetry meld. Instead of stop-stand-stare museum exhibits, at ROMP you will find ways to interact with and personalize poetry. The museum theme changes each year. The 2019 theme is In the Bones. Explore all of the ways that bones serve as a foundation, a way of living, a structure and theme of our lives. The displays ask you to think creatively and to take your place in the poetry populace. ROMP is located in a small building in rural northeastern Oklahoma, a few miles west of Locust Grove. The brainchild of poet Shaun Perkins, ROMP began with a dream of poetry machines that turned into a crazy idea to create a humble rural space that is a place for the all people. The ROMP mission is to bring poetry and people together, to advance creativity and literacy and to provide a space where people can have an experience of poetry.

Shaun runs a small center to encourage poetry through both exhibits and interactive tools. We loved this place and found it fun to create some poems ourselves. Shaun is a wonderful woman who really welcomes visitors. It is advisable to contact by email and/or phone so she can welcome you properly.

Trevor and Kathy--Thanks so much for your review and for visiting. I enjoyed talking with you and look forward to seeing all the stops on your Route 66 trip! I bet you are having great fun. Come back anytime. ROMP is always changing. In fact, I just updated the treehouse since you were here!

ROMP is a very interactive museum for kids and adults. Visitors can read poetry, write poetry, and find poetry in unexpected places. Every nook and cranny hold another thing to do. My favorites are the secret corner and the area dedicated to cats (2 cats live in the museum). This is a very hands-on museum, wonderfully decorated. There is also a retreat space if you want to spend a day or two with your own creative process.

Shaun and her sisters do a terrific job of creating an environment that brings out the poet in everyone. Plenty of tactile, interactive exhibits that spark creativity and fun. A truly wonderful environment that's a breath of fresh air. Thanks for being such great hosts! - Burt Mummolo, News Channel 8

ROMP was a unique and fascinating stop on our roadtrip. The main building, grounds, and tree house are filled with a variety of thought provoking, hands-on exhibits. The whole place is a great illustration of the vitality and accessibility of poetry for everyone. Great ideas for teachers! Shaun is a wonderful host. We can't wait to go back with our daughter.
