Teenagers and I went to kill time waiting to check in. Saw deer, road runner, birds. The kids enjoyed skipping stone. Unbelievable weather for August. 78 degrees, overcast. Water too cold to swim.

I was a little concerned booking here due to the lack of reviews, but I am so glad I did! Oklahoma state parks are very different from Texas. For one, you don't pay a fee going into the park.. and we didn't see any park rangers or have anyone check on us for the 3 days we were there. Also, you still have to pay for a fishing license even if you are fishing in the state park (so it's nice there is no fee to get into the park). From what I could tell, just anyone can drive into this state park and there is no way of monitoring it. Many times we saw random people driving up and using the bathrooms near our cabins, when they clearly weren't staying at the park. This was so odd to me, but I have never stayed at a state park other than Texas so I'm not sure how normal this is? I never felt scared or threatened with the traffic, everyone kept to themselves so this wasn't an issue, since we had our own bathroom in our cabin and didn't use the public one. Now, the cabin area was great! We had a group of 3 different families. All of the cabins were in close proximity to each other, and across the street was a large covered picnic area, grills, and a fire pit. This worked out perfectly for our group! We all got to cook, eat, and hang out together in this middle area, which was great! The cabins were a lot nicer than I expected for a primitive cabin. They were clean, had 2 (actually very comfortable) twin beds, a bathroom with a shower, and a back screened in porch with a great lake view. It also had a window unit which was a huge plus. If you keep in mind that this is the "camping" cabin, I think you will be very happy and impressed with it. All of us went into it thinking it would be comparable to the screened shelters we have stayed in at other state parks and this was much, much better. I had seen comments saying behind the cabins is a drop off to the lake, which is worrisome for if you have children. I was worried about this, but it really wasn't a huge deal. There is quite a bit of land in the back of your cabin before you get to the drop off. We also spend most of our time in the middle area so this was not an issue at all for our young children. The state park was mowed, but could definitely use some work on the upkeep part of things. There were very few signs to tell us where to go, and just the grounds keeping could have been better. The "play ground" they had looked like it hasn't been touched since the 80's.. which was a little neat because the old rusty metal playground equipment brought us down memory lane. LOL! But all in all, we all had a wonderful time! LOVED the cabins and the general area that kept us all together vs separated. Also loved the price and pretty lake views. Another plus was it is near a small casino! We are already planning our return, I feel like I have found a hidden jewel.

When you want to get away from it all, Hugo Lake State Park is the place to be. Still waiting to be discovered as a tourist attraction, you can be assured that there is no overcrowding in this small state park. What it lacks in beauty it makes up for in serenity. We actually live about a mile from where the Kiamichi River feeds into Hugo Lake... the lake itself is a big open basin lake with few creeks and/or inlets. We visit the park when we need a weekend getaway. The park has small primitive cabins (no bath... but shower and restroom facilities are close to cabins), small cabins with bath (nice for a couple or small family) and two bedroom luxury cabins which are upgraded and very nice. Tent camping is available also. All of these cabins are very nice and clean. When compared to some of the other state parks in Oklahoma, this place is a real bargain. There is a marina located within the park and the nice folks there are always helpful and friendly. There are 2 pavilions available to rent and a full service kitchen for rent also for those school and family reunions. Be sure to check out the website for a listing of available facilities. Some facilities are not available due to flooding in 2015. We love this place as it offers a peaceful getaway and is very affordable... you will love it too.

Great time with family. Best view of the lake! Clean cabin and had access to Netflix. The kitchen was fine to work in. We will come to this place again.

We read about the "boats" for rent and took our fishing gear and rented a cabin. When we got there, we were informed that the "boat" was in the shop. Ok.. there was a large marina with hardly anybody in the slips. We asked, can we fish off the docks? The answer was "NO." Our cabin sat way up on a bluff, no access there. Though the cabin itslef was nice, the only grill was one of those little ones on a pole and it was way down a muddy hill with weeds all around. The deck was full of spider webs. The inside was nice and clean though, so we ended up just cooking in there. The cabin has NO frills, so bring all your coffee filters and coffee, salt and pepper, etc. There was not even a dish towel to wipe down the counter. Though we did enjoy our stay, we were disappointed with the upkeep outside and lack of fishing access.

The lake, park, and surrounding area have a huge potential but nothing has been maintained in years. This place is in disrepair and in need of major work. Picnic areas haven't been mowed in a long time. Tables are broken and/or completely missing. Walkways and stairs are covered in debris and in bad shape. The roads are horrible!
It's a cool area and worth saving. The state need to spend some money.

This is a beautiful quiet lake in southern Oklahoma. We enjoy staying in the cabins or the hospitality house. There's a beach nearby, deer and birds to watch. A wonderful spot to relax.

We had a great time. Our cabin was nice with great view of the lake as it and others sit on a rock bluff above the water. Family hung out and relaxed. It is not crowded and there is very little traffic. We will go back.

This is a great and mostly overlooked lake in Oklahoma. Good water and great fishing. Not many folks around so it makes for a good time out without the crowds that other Oklahoma lakes attract... next trip we plan on trying one of the many cabins.
