Since I live near Woodlawn Cemetery, I have visited often. Besides historic gravesites, there is a wonderful collection of mature trees. The trees are identified by numbers, so that one can learn to identify them with a keyed list that can be obtained.

Always looking for new places to explore & learn something new. Beautiful & well kept, tons of large trees & lots of history. Peaceful for a stroll, doesn't even feel like your in the city. Loved seeing different architecture of the old graves and buildings.

I've been to Arlington, Evergreen and others, and this one wins for beauty of setting and monuments. Unbelievable that it's in the heart of Toledo bordering I75. I've taken pictures here during winter that boggle the mind. Unfortunate that it's in such a decaying area of Toledo, though decay has touched the cemetery rather lightly.

This cemetery is dangerous. it is widely known for being haunted, and many young kids hang around especially at night. They vandalize the cemetery and conduct witchcraft and seances in the surrounding park. It is a very dangerous place to go which is unfortunate due to the fact that it is supposed to be a place to let those who have passed on rest in peace. It is anything but peaceful...

Established in 1876, this beautifully landscaped cemetery was part of the nation's rural cemetery movement. This focused on establishing cemeteries outside rapidly growing cities to address overcrowding, possible public health risks and the need for leisure space. Woodlawn is on the National Register of Historic Places

Today, at least 65,000 individuals, from babies to prominent Toledo citizens, are interred within the 160 acres. We drove slowly through the cemetery's rolling hills, sometimes leaving our vehicle to look closely at gravestones, monuments and a few of the 42 mausoleums. We found the "tree" markers with "stumps" that signify interred children to be especially interesting. Obelisks appear frequently.

Perhaps the two most unusual monuments are for John Gunckel and Bessie Ludwig. A 1,000-ton pyramid, 26-feet high and constructed with 10,000 small stones and rocks from around the world, marks Gunckel's grave. He was the founder of the Toledo Newsboys Association. Ludwig's family ensured that the easy chair, where she spent most of the last 25 years of her life, was replicated in granite. It appears about half-way up the massive 40-foot-high monument. The pyramid stands by a stream toward the rear of the cemetery. Ludwig's monument looms just beyond the entrance in section 1.

I especially enjoyed the landscaping, which includes about 300 species of trees and myriad bushes, some flanking tombstones. Two lakes contribute to the tranquil place. A variety of birds appear here, and part of a clearly marked birding trail runs through the cemetery.

The main entrance to Woodlawn is at West Central and Auburn avenues with cemetery maps just inside the entrance to the right, below a big information sign. Woodlawn's main office is directly to the left after entering.

If you enjoy cemetary tourism, or cemetary art this historical cemetary will NOT disappoint!! I have been to many respected cemetaries all over the USA (places such as Key Wests cemetary), and feel this historical cemetary is rival to the more famous cemetaries. Woodlawn is populated with beautiful tombstones, markers, and artwork that will impress.

Check the official website for Woodlawn, as they offer historical walking tours through the grounds with a guide.

The grounds are beautiful, hosting a diverse selection of wildlife. Many people visit Woodlawn for bird watching. While there, I have seen deer, and rabbits. The grounds are very well kept, and beautiful year round.

Bird watching
Seasonal tourism (the grounds rival a botanical garden)

This is not your typical historical cemetery where you walk around tombstones and memorials and chapels (which are greatly made by the way). This is also an arboretum where you can enjoy all sort of trees while you walk around ponds or crossing bridges over the Ottawa River. Look for free guided tours where docents explain about the history of people buried here as well as the tress around the place.

No zombies! Great place to play frisbee with the dog. Although you might need to move a few large rocks outta the way, that seem to litter the place.

The landscaping here is so wonderful...it's such a quiet beautiful place to visit on a not-so-great side of town. Some of the features of the cemetery are run down, like the old chapel. It's a shame that some benevolent philanthropist doesn't come along and donate the money to fix the place up! Woodlawn cemetery is one of Toledo's gems, in my opinion, and it deserves to be preserved.

Very interesting to wander through this old Toledo Cemetery! Large Monuments and Head Stones - even a special BABY (Infant) section. Love the bridge and meandering stream - this cemetery is very peaceful and calming.
