For most people National Parks are about nature and the signature natural attraction and symbol for Cuyahoga Valley National Park is Brandywine Falls. CVNP and Cleveland have numerous waterfalls due to the geological composition of the region and the Cuyahoga River which cuts the valley. Of all the falls, Brandywine is the tallest at 60 feet. It also can be the most powerful after rainfall or snow melt. We witnessed it after a prolong dry period.

Unfortunately, at this time you can not reach the falls by car due to bridge construction which includes a new parking lot and restroom at the falls, all under construction. However, you can reach the falls from the Town of Boston via the Stanford Trail which is about a 1.5 mile hike which is what we did. This is a great hike with tons of birds.

When you reach the falls, there are two view platforms, a lower and upper. For me the lower is the better view with a more complete view of the falls. There are a few stairs to reach but nothing overwhelming. The upper viewing area is slightly more obscured in the summer by the trees. Still it is another great place to see the falls.
There are 2 more places for good views around the falls. The first is the site of a former electrical generating plant that is now gone. It is right at the top of the falls. The second is on a bike and pedestrian bridge across the creek above the falls. This is a great view of the gorge. Here we also saw two mallards feeding in the creek above the falls.

Again the falls are the natural symbol of the park and a great illustration of natural beauty in this park. I highly recommend you visit.

The falls are spectacular, particularly when the river is running high. The boardwalk leading to several vantage points is easy to navigate and takes you along a beautiful stone ledge.

If you are visiting the park this is a must do activity. It does get crowded midday and during peak season, so early in the day and late in the day may be when you want to plan your visit. The parking lot fills quickly.

Pictures don't do it justice. After planning our CVNP trip, I had seen many photos of Brandywine Falls from reviews. While I try not to set expectations, in the back of my mind I was thinking we'd visit the falls because it's a top thing to do at the park, but wasn't thinking it would be that impressive. After seeing the falls in person, it was one of my favorites stops at the park. The falls appeared bigger than what I had expected from pictures, and the amount of water going over was fairly impressive. There is a lower overlook, an upper overlook, and another overlook from a gristmill area (didn't do the last one). It's a two minute walk from the parking lot, although you can hike a trail to make it a little bit more of an adventure. Attended with family of three kids (ages 6-11); boardwalks were all enclosed - no fear of heights in case anybody is wondering. Went on a Friday late afternoon in April and pretty much had the entire falls to ourselves (was maybe two other couples there). Spent maybe 20 to 30 minutes enjoying the area.

Brandywine Falls is beautiful. The best view of the Falls is at the beginning of the trial, but continues to be viewed at other points during the journey. The trail took us around 45 minutes to complete and was fairly bumpy at times. There were a couple of points were you could choose which direction to go and we felt those could have been better marked or had maps posted. A decent amount of people were out, so we just asked them and they were pretty helpful. The trail was a tad muddy, but nothing too excessive. Parking is somewhat limited, but we were ok going around 11:30 in the middle of March. Portable restrooms are available for use.

One of the nicer falls in the area. For those with limited mobility, the upper views are all wheelchair accessible. You can also go down the stairs for a closer look. And if you want a hike, there is a trail that heads downstream, then loops back up the valley, but this is definitely rated a moderate. The only problem ever is the parking lot can be kind of full and parts of the walkway can be closed off if it gets icy.

Visiting on a beautiful August Sunday, the parking lot, which includes access to picnic tables and porta potties, for Brandywine Falls and the trailhead for the Brandywine Gorge Loop Trail was very busy but after waiting just a few minutes, that ranger on duty directed us to an open spot.
The falls are access by taking the Brandywine Gorge Loop trail from the parking lot in a counterclockwise direction and after a very short distance, one bears to the left onto a boardwalk that descends to the observation platform with the aid of quite a few stairsteps. When one is done, one can return to the parking lot, as most do, for a short hike that is probably less than a 0.1-mile (0.2k) roundtrip.

If one is looking for a longer, worthwhile hike with many fewer people than at the falls, one can complete the 1.4-mile (2.3k) Brandywine Gorge Loop by turning to the left at the end of the boardwalk and continuing on the loop counterclockwise. The trail comes to the crest of the falls after a short distance then turns to the north and share the trail with the Bike & Hike Trail for a short distance before turning west, paralleling Brandywine Creek and descending peacefully 160 feet (49m) to the bottom of the gorge.

At the bottom, there is access to a scenic section of Brandywine Creek where many stop to enjoy the view and take their shoes off to wade through the cool, shallow water; however, be very careful as access down the creek’s banks is often very slippery.

Shortly beyond the creek access, the trail turns south for a short distance and crosses the creek with the aid of an excellent footbridge then turns easterly and climbs out of the gorge. The climb is quite steep at points and includes a number of steep steps before leveling out at the end shortly before the trail returns to the trailhead and parking lot.

The parking lot is small and fills up quickly because this is a popular spot. Trail is not too long to hike to it. Fall is nice, though I admit there was more color outside the park than inside. It was easier to hike because it was a boardwalk with stairs.

We were fortunate with the construction (June2022), that the main road was closed. Since we were staying at the Inn at Brandywine, this created time where we had the entire falls and boardwalk to ourselves.
Even with other travelers I can see why this is the highlight of CVNP.

The waterfall is beautiful! If you drive right to it you won’t get a hike in at all, it’s right there. My husband and I started at the Boston Mills visitor center and the full hike back and forth to Brandywine is about 5 miles which was absolutely perfect. Really pretty hike and so well maintained by the national parks department, so grateful for all their work.

We visited the Brandywine Falls on a steamy Saturday afternoon in August and loved it. Parking was nearby, and the half mile wall leading to the falls traversed an elevated boardwalk. Yes, in order to get the best views, one must climb down a long set of stairs, but I wouldn’t classify that section of the trek more than moderate.

The falls themselves are peaceful and surprisingly high. It’s just too bad that one cannot get a tiny bit closer to the water, because at other similar attractions, one can feel the mist. Not possible here. Nevertheless, the view is very nice, and you can gawk at the brave souls in the rocky water below who evidently climbed over the fence and ventured down the dirt path to cool off.

Definitely a walk worth taking for a sight worth seeing in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
