I went to the museum where I paid the $7 and was given a map of the trails. The lady said they were behind the museum and to look near the parking lot for them. I found one unmarked trail off the parking lot and the mound builders trail a little farther down. I found makers with numbers on them but couldn't line them up with the trails on the map. I found almost all the markers but could not see anything that looked like mound or a stone circle near the markers. The exception being the mound covered with stones which the sign said was a recreation. It was fall so maybe the stone circles were covered by the leaves but where are the mounds? I did see the couple of mounds in front of museum. Did not go to the other end of park as road was closed. Very disappointing.

This museum is a great stop, for solo travel or with a group, diving into the richness of Ohio Indian history, with artifacts galore and information on how this location was discovered, excavated and preserved.

Visited Fort Ancient State Memorial, which is located near King's Island, Ohio, in April 2021. The museum was closed, but the grounds were open. There are many Native American burial mounds at this location, on both sides of the road that travels through the park. At the rear of the park, there are picnic areas. I could also see reconstructed Native American structures in the outside, fenced-in area of the rear of the museum. There was no entrance fee to the grounds, although there was a booth that could have taken a fee.

I grew up near Cincinnati, so we would go out there all the time when I was a child and just had a blast. When I got older, it became a place to go, to get away from how fast the world has become and that was 20 year’s ago we’d do that. Now I have to hide in my writing because that can’t crash, just like the fort will always be a great place to go, to put your phone’s down and enjoy your life and friends.. hell maybe family too? lol I didn’t even mention the significance of the land itself. I grew up in Loveland, named by the same Indians that built fort ancient and they named it Loveland because of bad spirits in the valley. This is the lost and forgotten part of our history that’s way bigger than thanksgiving and the pilgrims. We’re thieves and murders and they say, “Violence gets you nowhere!” Tell that to world HIStory.

This is wonderful journey back in time. The docents are very knowledgeable and the subject matter about our native Americans is very well presented. Well worth the trip.

Go to the museum first to pay and to get information about the site. The museum itself is very informative and interesting. There are a lot of good exhibits. After that you can drive to the back part of the site and do some trails. Views are great but the connector trail is quite steep and you have to have good footing.

Stopped with my grandson and daughter to explore the Indians legacy. The mound building is obvious. The museum was very well outlined and organized with a clear timetable of historic events. Original and reproduction items were on display with plenty of explanation. The children’s room was awesome with skins, hides, period clothes and examples of native cultures. Outside there were reproduced native housing examples we could enter and see how they were made. Lots of trails there but we chose the car ride through the mounds. Very informative, grandson had a blast. Nice little gift shop inside.
