I attended a weekend encaustic workshop here and was very pleased. Large, very cool old building with attentive and professional staff. Reasonably priced workshop in a comfortable, large space.

Restaurants for lunch nearby, but limited lodging in Oberlin. (I think the closest chain hotels are in Elyria or North Olmstead.)

The photography exhibit in the main gallery was top notch with a great variety of subject matter. Nice gift shop as well.

This tiny place evidently displays exhibition which change frequently. We stopped to see an exhibit “Artist as Quiltmaker”. It was stunning. The works were first class. I’m sure this is evidence of high quality exhibits. We will keep an eye out for future events.

FAVA holds art exhibits of various kinds throughout the year. The curated biennial photo and quilt exhibits are especially of a high quality and have a national reputation. A gift shop offers original and attractive gifts, and if you're staying for any length of time in Oberlin, you could even sign up for one of their painting, sewing, or origami classes!

This vibrant art center is housed in what was an Oberlin College classroom building (Westervelt Hall) from the 1920s until the 1960s. Although the building shows its age, it is by now charming and functions as a generously large exhibition space. The Association extends the capacity of the interior by adding exhibits to the front fence and the stately tree outside the entrance. It hosts carefully selected shows, and is serious about its jury responsibilities. The small gift shop matches small museums in its range of items for sale.

There are two gallery spaces and a fine craft shop at FAVA. All are worth a look and change frequently.

Oberlin's a great town to walk through and browse the various shops. One of the little known places you might not see is FAVA which is in an old schoolhouse near the public library. It has a great little gift shop of eclectic art, jewelry, etc. - most made by locals. And it has a gallery that features different kinds of art every few months - it's all free. FAVA also offers art classes if you're staying in the area long enough. This is just one more great little drop-in place on the streets of Oberlin.

We had lunch at Treehugger's cafe in Oberlin and decided to tour the Main Street area. We decided to visit the Fireland's Association for the Visual Arts. They had on display various South American textiles and photographs. The guide had intimate knowledge of the anthropologist, which gave me the impression that they were old friends. This made the tour less of academic exercise and more relevant experience of the human condition. We had only planned to pop in and look around, but we stayed for over an hour. Very enjoyable experience.

If you have not stopped in to see their art gallery, you must. Sign up to get their post card of up and coming artists to be displayed there.
