I went to The Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve on a very sunny and warm, late October, Friday morning. I had been here before to rent a kayak, but never walked the trails. My goal was to hike at least 3 miles and check out how good the birding is. This is a very birdy place and a great walk; I will be back during migration season…although I saw some good stuff on this walk.

My plan was to walk all the trails kind of looping them together in one walk. It turns out that the Woods Trail no longer connects to the Marina View trail due to erosion so I had to do a large backtrack to near the parking lot to the walk the Marina view trail…and then backtrack again. This resulted in about a 5-mile hike for all the trails. All the trails were well marked.

At the parking lot the is a short trail that is not on the trail map called the Prairie Trail. It leads to a fake chimney in the middle of the field…presumably to attract Chimney Swifts. It loops back to the main overlook Trail. Shortly after that is the Marsh Overlook trail. It follows the edge of the marsh and is a great walk but head the sign at the trailhead that the path may be impassible if there had been rain recently. I was ¾ of a mile in and came to standing water all around the trail. Had to talk through 4-6 inches of water for 100 yards to continue the hike. It is also for humans only…no horses or pets. Even though it is rustic…I applaud them for having a trail like this…can’t wait to bird it in the spring.

The Overlook Trail is very wide and made of crushed stone. Tons of walkers. Joggers, and bikers. There are multiple sets of stairs to go down and access the beach. You can walk further into the State-owned land and add a few more miles to your hike. This is a great little community, and I would recommend it.

We visited national parks, state parks, and other preserves, and for a city park the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve is astonishing. It's a little less than a square mile in size, but boasts a nature preserve, excellent walks, forest paths, a marsh, and great views on a Great Lake.

Mentor Lagoons is, paradoxically, both easy to get to and a little hard to find. You basically want to take State Route 615 north from Route 2 or Interstate 90. About 2 miles north of route 2, you'll go straight north instead of to the west and you'll more or less snake your way through a nice residential neighborhood. I had no trouble finding it based on the signs and dead reckoning, but use your GPS in a pinch.

When you get there, there are essentially two parts. You'll cross over a small bridge and see a marina to your left (west) and a smaller parking area along the marsh to your right. I though I might be in the wrong place as it almost looks like a small industrial park, but don't worry, you'll be in the woods shortly. Go to the right and park. There's an excellent, smooth path along with a stand with a map of sorts. Take the path north.

From there you have lots of options. I wanted to see the lake on a nice fall day. The path isn't paved, but it is very, very well-maintained and level, although there is a slight incline. From there you can go to the lake, take forest trails, or walk along the edge of the huge marsh. It isn't crowded, but I came across a number of nice dog owners and other out just for a nice walk.

The park is light on amenities - there are a few picnic tables, and not much else, but the paths are very nice. I walked along the lake, which was fun although a little difficult with the sand and stones. If you want an easier lakeside walk, there is an excellent path about 100 feet inland. You can also walk through some woodland trails, which I liked, although they can be a little muddy (this is a wetlands area, after all).

This is beautiful park and amazing for one that is essentially one of a suburban town. If you want a pleasant walk and some nice views (and don't need lots of amenities) this is for you. If you want to grab something to eat either before or afterwards, you are only 10 minutes or so from countless restaurants in Mentor itself.

So the cleveland museum took this over and decided to spray the whole 1 section of the marsh with helicopter full of pesticide killer to kill all the fragmities that took over. They also brought in a machine to crush and kill everything in its path. I guess it's an okay place if you want to see dead flat smashed marsh. Keep an eye out for the 3 eyed turtles and bald squirrels that they caused from their mnaynay MANY dumps of pesticides. Maybe the lockness monster will come out too since they poured all those nasty chemicals into the water.

Enjoyed this summer's Kayaking here! Only $10 per hour and includes paddles & required life jacket. It was my first time ever kayaking and it was great at Mentor Lagoons because it wasn't real busy, the employees were very helpful and the sights are beautiful! We would go to the "waterfall" and turn around-just an hours time. We, also, ventured past the houses along the lagoons and were able to see their beautiful gardens and even a large carved bear! The Mentor Lagoons has a few trails as well. We have walked our dogs down to the lake and along the shore. You can also walk on the tree shaded pathway, which makes it cooler on a hot day! They have made some nice improvements to this area! We look forward to yearly visits here!

I just found out about this place and I'm so glad I did! I always love going to Mentor Headlands and this place is only about 15 mins from there so it's a great addition to a day trip if you're in the mood for some light hiking.
There are several trails here that bring you to different parts of the lagoon, marina, marsh, through the forest and to the beach. Be aware that while the beach is very beautiful and secluded, it's also very rocky and there's lots of driftwood! Be prepared so you don't hurt your feet!
Overall, great place to enjoy the outdoors and get some fresh air and exercise. And parking is free!

The Mentor Lagoons is a beautiful nature preserve, tranquil, quiet and peaceful. Whether you choose to walk the trails or rent a canoe, you're bound to enjoy yourself here. They have just recently updated the parking lot and things just keep on getting better.

It is about a mile walk to the most secluded beach. No bathrooms when you get there. It is beautiful!! The walk to the beach is very quiet, no highway traffic, no people, just the sound of nature. When you get to the beach, all you see in either direction is sand and lake. There might be a couple people down the way but that is all.

I recently spent a very enjoyable hour with two friends kayaking around the Mentor Lagoon. We rented one "two-person" and one "one-person" kayak. Both were in excellent condition. As we were kayaking in a lagoon, it was very easy to do (no waves). The price was very reasonable and the young woman who rented us the kayaks was pleasant and helpful. We were basically in a boat "parking lot", and it was fun to look at the various boats, as well as the variety of houses and makeshift bar/relaxation stations along the pier. There is a bathroom to change in. Be sure and bring water tight bags for your valuables. Go, take off your shoes, kick back and stroke for an hour!
