We drove from CLermont Ferrand to visit this place, arrived 14:55 to find the place closed. I was not impressed as when we looked it up on the internet it said it opened at 14:30.

We absolutely loved our visit to Gros Ouvrage Maginot du Hackenberg. It was one of the highlights of our trip. The working train and cannon turrets were incredible and the museum pieces inside were incredible as well. I would highly recommend it.

Amazing feat of military history...heart of the French fortress which prepared itself to defend their boarders against the Germans and failed dismally. 6miles of underground tunnels you move through 1km in a underground train. Experience what life was like for the french soldiers and learn...More

Highly recommend the tour, (especially if yo7 don’t read French) which is available in different languages through the day. Just wandering around you would miss a lot of history and information about what you are seeing. Take a sweater or jacket, it is cool underground....More

If you're in the area this is definitely a must-see! The fortress of hackenberg is humongous and truly awe inspiring. The staff and guides were informative and friendly and is very reasonably priced! Definitely bring warm clothes!

The tour, during which you can see both the interior and exterior of this impressive fortress of the Maginot line, took about 2.5-3 hours, partly by foot, partly by (authentic) train. The fortress is remarkably intact, including the operation system of the large gunstig, and...More

Ouvrage Hackenberg info needed (3 Replies)
We are planning to visit the area later this month and are interested in visiting Ouvrage Hackenberg. I have looked at the website and it seems that it is open on Wed. and Sat. at 2pm. I am trying to confirm this so that I can plan our itinerary accordingly. I have e-mailed twice and have not received a reply. I just now tried to call (during what should be open hours) and only got a long recorded message.... in French, which I do not understand. I was not able to leave a message. Can anyone...More

Tourist sites are notoriously poor at responding to emails - especially ones in a foreign language. The website clearly states that from 12 November there are guided tours at 14:00 (2 o'clock in the afternoon) on Wednesdays and Saturdays only (thus including Saturday 22 November). The website also states that they are CLOSED EXCEPTIONALLY on 1 November - i.e. today.
Schoenenbourg or Hackenberg (4 Replies)
We're planning a trip to the area in late May. We had hoped to visit both Ouvrage Schoenenbourg and Ouvrage Hackenberg, but not sure we can make the time with other things we have planned. If we only visit one, which would be better as far as interesting to see as well as other sites in the nearby area. Thanks for help in eliminating one of these places.

Wow! I've been here for over 20 years now, and your post was the first I've seen relating to these two places. I'm really sorry that I can't help you because I live too far away and have never visited either, but thank you for teaching me a bit more about the lovely region in which I live. I do hope other TA members will chime in to answer you. Sorry I can't help you further.

Maginot Line (2 Replies)
We will be in Reims for a couple of days in August 2015 followed by a short visit into Belgium. I would like to visit one of the forts of the Maginot Line. Since my time is limited and I think one fort would be more than enough to visit at this time, I'd like to make the best possible choice. I thought a visit to Ouvrage Hackenberg might be a good choice. Can anyone tell me if there is another fort in the Reims area that might be a better preserved or more interesting choice? Thanks
