If you have never been here, you need to see it. You are given a tour of the entire reformatory from the old cells to rooms that were used as offices, etc. The movie "Shawshank Redemption" was filmed here and some of the rooms were renovated for scenes in the movie. The guided tour is better as you sometimes have trouble hearing the audio on the self-guided tours. There is even a small gift shop.

This was originally designed to serve as a boys’ reformatory, which it did for a number of years before being converted to a maximum-security prison. The architecture is beautiful, and if you are a Shawshank Redemption fan, you will enjoy seeing areas that were used in the movie. Other than that, (1) it is overpriced by about $15, costing $25.00 for a self-guided tour with an audio stick (we were told several times the tour was “abbreviated” because of Covid, but the prices were not “abbreviated”; (2) if you don’t pay for the audio stick, you’ll get nothing out of the self-guided tour; (3) the tour route placards are difficult to follow, and we found ourselves backtracking continually and asking for directions; (4) a large part of the structure is closed; (5) most of the rooms are empty and devoid of furniture and we never saw things like the mess hall, infirmary, or showers; (6) the cell block used for the prison is downright nasty and once you’ve seen one or two cells, you should turn around and leave as fast as possible; (6) the prison is gimmicky and geared toward “paranormal” activities, apparitions and a Halloween fright night. I had wanted to see the prison for a long time and I can cross it off my bucket list, but I’m still annoyed at the cost. Upon reflection, it really wasn’t worth the admission price.

My two friends and I did the self- guided tour with audio. Granted, this place is old, but there’s been little effort at any kind of clean up — piles of plaster that have fallen from the walls and ceiling, filth. And for this they charge $30! You have to be a Shawshank Redemption groupie to care about half of the info provided. Maybe a personalized tour would have made the experience more interesting. Otherwise, the main benefit is that you get a workout climbing the stairs.

Wow! This place is amazing....the architecture, history and beauty! Even in it's decay it is something to see. Unfortunately the guided tours were full, so we did the self audio tour. They provided some good information, but were somewhat hard to hear. We took about 3 hrs, but listened to every stop and read a lot of the information they provided. There are a lot of steps but they are scattered about and you can take your time. There is a small gift shop. There were a few food trucks outside and some tables, so you can grab a bit if you like. We thoroughly enjoyed touring this prison, and of course loved all the info about the Shawshank Redemption, much of which was filmed here.

We did the Inmate Confessions Tour with Michael Humphrey and it was SO interesting! I loved the detail and stories that were told. I would absolutely recommend coming here and to do the Inmate Confessions Tour!

We’ve visited the Mansfield Reformatory about 4 times now and always enjoy our visits. Check Groupon as sometimes you can get discounted tickets. We do the self guided tours with the handheld speakers so we can take our time. It’s as described, an old prison that’s no longer used (right next to a prison in current use so some areas are off limit to photography). We spent about 2 hours in total there. If you like history or the movie the Shawshank Redemption or creepy places, it’s a cool place to check out.

Our family drove from Cleveland this past week to Mansfield to visit and take the Hollywood tour.

Our GPS routed us to the active institution next store and the kind officer opened a gate since I was struggling to backup my vehicle to get on the correct path. Yes, I was technically trespassing.

On arrival, you need to check in and get a wristband. This tiny room is very historical in appearance but has a horrible echo. Check it over before leaving the window. Ours was wrong and a helpful guide got us the right ones. Organizing our tour was a bit tough but once you have your ear buds and microphone box we were all set. We started 15 min late due to construction on Route 30 backing others up. Thank goodness there was a fantastic museum to spend time in! The box Andy left Red, original “Brooks was Here” sign, info about the reformatory itself decades before Shawshank and Air Force One, which was filmed here too.

Tour was substantial and I enjoyed our local guide’s enthusiasm along with guides-in-training. If you can’t afford a guided tour, fear not! The audio tour is quite extensive and at this time only $5. Our tour was 35$ per adult and 2 hrs long.

Local guide had info about where the oak tree was, scenes shot at Malabar farms, making this a more comprehensive destination and called this The Shawshank Trail.

I would certainly come back, especially now I know how to get there. I applaud the preservation society for saving this from a wrecking ball and bought some goods to support them. Hope is perhaps the best of things and we need to get busy living so as to pass old ways of thinking on, even if they were mistakes so the next gen can learn from them.

I finally took the hour trip to Mansfield on 6/11.I dont know why I never did this sooner. It is a nice mix of actual life in the prison as well as it being used for a movie set.If you pass through Ohio put this on the top of your must see places in the state.

We traveled here just to visit the prison and it did not disappoint!. The prison is in rough shape but it was so cool to hear all of the history and see the memorabilia from the Shawshank movie. The girl at the ticket counter was zero help so let me fill you in. The self guided tour is the perfect overview of the key areas. Get the $5 audio tour. A lot of good information is shared and they even have some commentary from former inmates. There are some but not a lot of placards with info so you’ll appreciate the audio. Get your own! The guided tours are a supplement but skip a lot of areas so you need to do the self guided to see everything. We did the ‘Beyond the Bars’ tour. It was an additional $35 per person and not a good value. It was cool to go to some additional areas and up on the roof to the guard tower but the guide wasn’t great and not super knowledgeable. We crossed paths with a History and Hollywood tour and that guide seemed very knowledgeable and was sharing a lot of good info. It is humid inside so ignore those reviews that say it’s cold. In the summer it’s cool and humid. Overall we really loved it and we were there 4 hours to see it all. Definitely a ‘must see’ experience. If you’re really into the movie, the Shawshank driving tour is also fun!

Great location. On our tour we saw a shadow person cross along a wall. We also heard the cell doors shaking as if people were rattling their locked cells. Interesting history and very well maintained.
