- Michele MPort Clinton, Ohio2 contributionsDon't Miss this Cave!A bit of a challenging hike. Incredible views around every corner. The rock house was really amazing to see. There was no signage, we just happened to see a few people inside the cave. Make sure you go inside the cave. Great way to get fresh air and excercise.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024
- Kate W63 contributionsIt’s a (cool) Pigeon HouseWe visited Rock House on a weekday morning, before anyone else was out, and it was very serene. The walk down to the cave is reasonable, not too challenging, though we almost walked past the cave entrance because we weren’t aware of what we were looking for. For context, we’re moderately active and in our early 30’s. Definitely bring a flashlight, just in case you’re there at a time when there isn’t much natural light. We walked in, used our flashlight, and were immediately greeted by all of the pigeons. There were probably 20 or so cooing from various shelves up above or flapping around. Their cooing echoes, so it can sound kind of spooky if you aren’t ready for it. We managed to avoid getting pooped on, but there is a bit of risk for that. Birds aside, it’s a really interesting structure. There’s plenty of space to walk around and explore. Once others arrived, with kids who wanted to be pigeons, it got loud fast and we hiked out. There are some manageable stairs (replacing an old bridge that’s out of service) before a slightly steep dirty path back to the parking lot. That took some effort, but was manageable as well.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2024
- 342mblChesterfield, Michigan48 contributionsRock House - my favorite hike in the area!My family of 4 (two in our 50s and 19 and 20 year old children) loved our hike here. I'd say it took more physical effort going up hills and had less sure footing than Old Man's Cave. It had many areas you'd need to stay away from the edge because of steeeep drops and what looked like soft crumbly edges. The cave was amazing and there were so many photo worthy vistas here. Well behaved dogs were enjoying it on leash, I certainly wouldn't want to take one of my dogs who pulls the leash.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 13, 2024

Not a bad hike and the cave was interesting- most enclosed space here by far- not an overhanging wall and ceiling of rock but rather an enclosed space much like but not a true cave. Tight squeeze to get in and yes it's a bit dark inside so a flashlight or use of your phone would help with better footing while inside. Appears to be a hangout for pigeons as we saw several of them nesting inside the place.
Consider parking at the bottom lot to the left of the entrance rather than driving up the hill to park. You'll thank yourself after completing the hike as the last climb out can tire you a bit. You won't face the walk across the bottom lot and back up the hill to get to your car.

The Rock House hike was very enjoyable.
The hike took us about an hour. We were not in a rush and stopped several times to enjoy the scenery. The Rock House is really a cave and a cool sight to see.
The facilities here a more primitive than the beautiful Visitor's Center at Old Man's Cave. It's a little more off the beaten path than Old Man's Cave, and on the day we visited both, the crowds were smaller at Rock House.
So if you'd like to take a laid-back hike to see a cave and other beautiful scenery, I highly recommend Rock House.

Out of all the hikes we did in Hocking Hills this was our favorite. The scenery looked like something out of the movie Pandora, the rock house is a pretty cool cave that you can walk through and enjoy the amazing creation of water and time. We took our 7, 8, and 10 year old daughters. they did really well. The cliffs are very steep so you must pay attention to them and where you are walking.

Great gorge/rim hike to a big cave in the Hocking Hills. I think this was the only real cave we saw (most of the others are overhangs). That being said, there are openings on several sides so it has natural light and you don't feel enclosed. Also, you don't really even notice that there's a large cave structure up the gorge wall once you are away from it. I keep track of all my hikes with Strava, which said this was a 1.08mile hike with 282ft of elevation gain that lasted 28 minutes. Parking is free and the trail is accessible from either of the two parking lots (we chose to start at the one up the hill).

Rock House in Logan is one of the best attractions in Hocking Hills State Park. Rock House is actually a tunnel cave through which one can walk end to end. A one-way trail starting from the parking lot takes one down to the cave, but the return is uphill. Steps are built into the rock where the grade is steep along the trail. The trail is short (less than a mile), but the surrounding scenery is beautiful with cliffs and greenery.
Rock House is a beautiful trail with an amazing feature as a reward for little effort. I really enjoyed this trail, and took lots of pictures. Do not miss a stop here when you visit Hocking Hills.

Currently one way route and only one route due to covid19 with many steps down with a steep hill out. There is a park ranger at the entrance monitoring how many people are in the park. Amazing sites but very crowded. The cave was really cool and people are very respectful of space. We were there Friday @ 11:00 and when we finished it was even more crowded. Overheard that Cantwell Cliffs was at its capacity at that point of the day.

Rock House is an interesting part of the Hocking Hills Region. If you are into Caving and Hiking then this is the place for you. This isn't a super easy hike, so be sure you have your water and a great pair of shoes! There is plenty of beautiful landscape along the way down and back up! Plenty of steps and uneven walking paths as well. Rock House is beautiful, TIP: bring a flashlight to help you see inside of it. There are also small pigeons that nest inside of Rock House! Watch for those. Many people do bring their dogs on the hike! We visited to write up a piece for Visit Ohio Today (dot) com

We recently stayed in the Hocking Hills State Park Lodge/Conference Center. Housed in the Lodge is the Rock House an open for breakfast lunch and dinner restaurant that serves hotel and cabin guests as well as visitors staying in other places. We had breakfast twice and dinner once while staying on the property. Breakfast choices were varied, eggs were prepared well, bacon and sausage cooked to perfection. The coffee is excellent and does not taste like an "institutional" blend. We also ate dinner at the Rock House once. We were seated on the outdoor patio and our server Garrett, was a very nice guy. I had the salmon entrée and my spouse had the pork chop. Both good, ample portions and came with a selection of sides. The baked potato I had was wonderful. There is a wine selection, many of which are vinted from local wineries. All in all a great place to dine right on the premises of the Lodge!

This is a short trail with a lot of steps and incline of a hill on way back. Took about an hour to explore and hike. According to AllTrails app it was about a miles hike to and from (which you had service to use apps). Rocks can be slippery so wear good shoes. Bring a flashlight so when in the cave you can see more and see where you are stepping.
There is a nice picnic area at Parking Lot #1. With a pavilion and fireplace. There is rest rooms which are non-flushing.
Definitely a must see when in Hocking Hills.

Reviews scared us a little but had done Gregs caves in Tobermory Ontario a few years back so gave it a shot. In our sixties and an older couple it looked like eighties was ahead of us gave us encouragement. Not bad just some tricky uneven footing here and there.
Dark in cave, light on phone barely adequate.
Monday 6/13/22 hot and 75 dew point like a sauna. Cool in cave. About .3 a mile down and same back up. Sweated our buns off but rewarding.!

What is the best time of day for photographing rock house? (Best for lighting, shadows, etc). Thanks!
Written July 11, 2019
I’d recommend using a good flash with a good SLR. Otherwise, the lighting won’t really work at any time of day, although early morning would be the best bet.

Where to park and how far a hike from there to the Rock House?
Written October 24, 2015
There is a parking lot that is pretty big. It's not too far of a hike. Maybe 1/2 mile. Check out their website and it shows you a map and says 1/2 mi and 1/2 hr to hike it. I tried to include the website here but it won't allow it. Sorry.
