About
The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio, is the birthplace of Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and his younger brother U.S. Sen. John Sherman (Sherman Antitrust Act). The ground floor of the home is furnished much as it would have been when the Shermans lived there. The front parlor contains many furnishings from the general's home in New York City. The second floor houses a recreation of Sherman's Civil War tent; interactive exhibits and an array of war and GAR artifacts. The gift shop features Civil War and local history books as well as puzzles, games and more. Because of the Covid pandemic, tours are offered at 12, 1, 2 & 3pm and are limited to 8 visitors at a time. Guides and visitors must wear masks. (Available for a dollar donation.) Tickets may be purchased in advance at website or at the door if any tickets remain.

Must stop for Civil War buffs.
May 2021
The Sherman House is a must stop for anyone interested in the Civil War and one of its most prominent generals. Sherman had a rough start in life, was flawed just like any human, but loved his country and put his life on the line to save the Union many times and with great skill. Being a big fan of President Grant, I loved hearing about Sherman's relationship with Grant- being "best buds". Our guide, Randy, was full of knowledge about the family and the house. Be sure to take in the Georgian House Museum if you take this tour. Well worth at least 2-3 days spent in the area soaking up the atmosphere of this charming town with its deep, rich history.

Historical and informative .

Beautiful restored birthplace home of William Tecumseh Sherman. Dates back to 1811 with 2 major additions after the Sherman family lived there.
General Sherman is known to all but his brother Senator John Sherman played a very important part in our history.
Previous reviews confused me as saying the home held many furnishings of the family. Our docent was quick to point out all the “period” furnishings to this home. Very few family possessions remain.
William Sherman was 9 when his father, Judge Charles Sherman, died leaving his wife with 11 children and no means of support. A neighbor of the family, Thomas Ewing, raised William. Later William married his foster sister Ellen Boyle Ewing at 30 years of age and had 8 children. As they say, the rest is history.
A wonderful interactive Civil War display along with Gen Sherman’s military tent is on display upstairs.

Sherman's boyhood home is interesting
Apr 2021
The boyhood home of William Tecumseh Sherman is worth a visit. The downstairs is filled with many original artifacts from the original home, procured from all over the country. The upstairs has a great collection of Sherman's Civil War leadership. The docents are knowledgeable and interesting. This is a worthwhile stop while in Lancaster.

Very knowledgeable friendly staff. Stopped by on a quiet Thursday and had a solo tour. Also checked out the Sherman statue and Civil War cannon in the nearby town square. I would also recommend a hike up nearby Rising Park overlooking Lancaster!

Sherman House

The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio is well worth the visit. The house and museum are located with in the historical district of Lancaster, a quite charming city in southern Ohio. The tour was well worth the time, and our docent gave an excellent overview of watch parts of the house were original to the time of William Tecumseh Sherman’s and the later addition. Lots of original family items in the main house. The upper floor has a dedicated area to General Sherman and the Civil War with excellent displays and artifacts from the General and the war.

William T. Sherman House
Aug 2020
The William T Sherman House was a wonderful place to visit. It was nice to see the town of Lancaster and home where Sherman grew up. The tour guide explained how his home was gradually expanded (middle portion of home) when William was growing up and that the front portion of the home was added by a later owner. The home has many Sherman family artifacts and period civil war décor. The tour guide was very informative. Glad we stopped in for the tour!

Historic house

It was amazing to see where such a famous historical figure was born and grew up for the beginning of his life. The tour guide was very informative and gave a nice tour. Only 4 rooms were the original that would of been the same as when William Tecumseh Sherman lived there. It was added on too after the family left. Alot of artifacts were in the house from the Sherman family and that was neat to see those period pieces.

Amazing for the Civil War buff
Nov 2019
I'm a huge Civil War nerd -- my father started me at a young age and it never ceased. Being able to take this tour was like heaven for me, but not my wife. I think this is a tour that would probably take up to an hour and I stretched it into a 2.5 hour visit. The tour is great -- the house, artifacts, history of the entire family, evolution of the house, General Sherman's childhood, etc. Then there is a small Civil War museum with a lot of artifacts upstairs.

This is a must for anybody that considers themselves a Civil War buff. Plus, the food on Main is amazing, and the other period-home-museums are worth seeing too!

Wonderful History Treasure
Nov 2019 • Couples
We are seniors and the cost was $4 each. What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Our tour guide was a retired teacher from Amanda schools. He was absolutely wonderful. Such knowledge! I had no idea that Sherman had done so many things besides his time in the Civil war. Lancaster is so fortunate to have such a treasure.
