Penitentiary Glen Reservation is one of the most diverse properties of Lake Metroparks. With paved and gravel paths, picnic shelters, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and the Nature Center, there is much that you can do here. Make sure to take Gorge Hikes or Off-trail hikes if they are offered.

They had "Candyland Goes Wild" in the Nature Center, a nice addition. We had never before been to this nature center and were very impressed by the many exhibits.

This is a park where I hike with friends frequently. We manage to get a fast, hilly 5 miles in, using the rustic horse trail, the more refined stone trails, and the somewhat declining Kirtland Connector trail. When we hike it, we have a couple of shallow creek crossings, with a steep incline on one. The Kirtland Connector has a... More

Although you can explore much of Penitentiary Glen on your own, the one scheduled hike for which you should sign up is the Gorge Hike which takes you into restricted areas in and on the banks of Stony Brook. Besides the usual Gorge Hikes led by trained volunteers, there are also specialized Gorge Hikes for photographers and Wine & Cheese... More

There are state parks that have less to offer than this Lake Metropark. It is incredible and right on the road about halfway between Kirtland and Holden Arboretum. Our first stop was the nature center with its museum, gift shop, drinking fountain, and restrooms. My wife was happy because she loves turtles, and they had several in tanks. From there,... More

Beautiful park. Great walking trails. Lots of room to spread out for the Mutt Strutt which is why we are here today. Park is clean and well maintained.

This park is a great place for any age to visit. There is a Nature center, a hummingbird garden, bird feeding area and an area in which they rehablilitate birds and animals which have suffered injuries. They offer programs there for adults, seniors and children. You can even bring your fishing rod and try fishing in the larger ponds. Or... More

Visited for a guided gorge walk. Once you are in the gorge, you could imagine being in some distant park with ice and show everywhere. Great that it is so close to home. Great naturalist guides. Good to get out of the house in mid-Winter.
