Off the Spirit of Tasmania early this morning and we headed straight to the little township of Sheffield, to view the town’s murals.

The plan was to head here first as there wasn’t much else open for travellers in the area around Devonport.

What a delight the town, and its murals were. Around 30 minutes south of the ferry terminal, through rolling farming land, the town is well worth a visit.

It’s obviously a proud community , that shows everywhere, and the murals all around the place finish off the image perfectly.

What a coincidence, we have visited both town where murals are a feature of the landscape; Chemainus on Vancouver Island, Canada and now Sheffield, Tasmania. Both had struggling economies and the murals kickstarted economic recovery. There seemed to be murals everywhere we looked in Sheffield, expertly painted and telling the history of the area, people that have lived there, events that have occurred and some of the natural attractions. So colourful and realistic. Raining when we arrived so drove slowly around town viewing many. Spotted some more in the late afternoon when the rain eased and, no doubt, there are many that we missed. Wonderful concept, creative minds and expertly painted; mural heaven.

Ingenious idea to turn this town into an open air art museum in the 1980s. It now has around 100 high quality murals scattered through its streets. Obtain a mud map from one of the various local business or go online to find this on 'google maps'.

Some of the murals are quite clever but the best thing is that they cost nothing to view as they are all out on public display.

Strangely the most famous (Eason's Chan's mural) is actually the worst (in my opinion anyway).

There are murals everywhere in Sheffield, on the sides of shops and other buildings along the main street as well as a large collection in the Mural Park. Many of the ones on the walls along the main street are fairly conventional, historical depictions of the pioneer farming days. They are of a high standard but you can see similar murals in other country towns. I found the line up or murals in the Mural Park - which is like a large outdoor art gallery - generally more interesting. These murals have been prize winners in the town's annual mural competition over many years, and most have a more modern feel or subject matter. It's well worth a wander around.

We continued our journey from Launceston to Devonport traveling on the scenic route, so far we visited Liffey Falls, The Great Western Tiers Sculpture in Deloraine… had a lunch break at Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm Café and finally arrived in a town called Sheffield – a town saved by murals. There is plenty of free off-street parking. You will find the bulk of murals by starting your treasure hunting of murals on ‘Main Street’. It is a fun activity to do with family and friends trying to find murals OR… choose the easy option and obtain a copy of location map from ‘Information Centre’ or checkout the of the map which is displayed publicly, that I believe to be, inside a bus-shelter. Taking the easy option would take the fun out of finding murals. Take the time to read the history of how Sheffield was a struggling town, not wanting to surrender just yet, the town formed a committee, learned from another country who faced similar fate and the committee decided to put in place, their successful idea in the hopes that it will do the same to save their town. Very fascinating story and full of determination and the murals portray just that – the events that happened and people, in both the modern and history of the town. Decades later, murals have continuously multiplied and spread further into the neighbouring areas, with over 200 murals to view – only if you have the time. Along Main Street, there are also café, pub and small shops to visit. Definitely a great town to visit, which the murals play a significant part of town, that you leave town with an amazing experience. You could easily immerse yourself, at a leisurely pace, for at least a couple of hours to appreciate the work these artists put into the murals.

We stopped off in Sheffield to see the murals on our way to Stanley and so glad we did. The town is so quaint and the whole town is full of murals on shop fronts and walls. We just wandered the whole town checking them all out and then stopped for coffee.
Lovely sleepy little town and well worth a visit.

Themes like this make going for long drives worthwhile. A lovely little town that has embraced colour with numerous wall murals, a mural park and mural mosaic walkway.

Make the time to stop and enjoy

Beautiful little town full of quirky, artisan shops and thriving businesses. We took a wander around the streets and viewed the many murals. Many of which have direct associations with the buildings they adorn. Well done Sheffield!

Sheffield is a lovely town in Tasmania and well worth a visit even without its murals. Add in the plethora of murals and it becomes a must see. The size, range and high quality of the many murals is incredible. Don't expect to breeze in and out as there is too much to see and do here.
