- Urangan T40 contributionsPam was very friendly and helpful. These guys do a great job. The experience was easy with a stream line process. Pam told us about the main attractions so it made it easy to put an itinerary that got us around the whole island, thanks guys.Hi Urangan, thanks for the postive review, We will be sure to pass on the feedback. - M DSydney, Australia150 contributionsProfessional and reliable service.Great service, extremely well organised, professional, clean and very friendly. They appreciated that we (as tourists) had booked ahead and had our barcode ready. We only had to wait 15 minutes each time, but we made sure we went on a week day, got to Kettering early and left BI in the early afternoon.Hi MD, Thank you so much for a wonderful review. It sounds as though you had a great trip to Bruny Island with us. We look forward to having you onboard again soon. - LDGSecret Harbour, Australia801 contributionsGreatCouldn’t fault the trip over and back , it was smooth and you could get out of your car and chill up in the seats or down on the side with your car or inside your car. Was a bit suss on the loading thoe as cars behind us got on before us on the way over . I think it fits roughly 36 med cars . Took about 20 minutes including loading and disembarking . Be aware a massive line up can occur either side on peak periods. Especially on the way back , check the time tables and everything I found shuts between 4-5pm on Bruny. So peak time would be then to line up. There is a tiny shop at Bruny Sealink site ,but if your in peak holiday season , than grab some travellers for the line up and ferry . Took us an hour .Hi there, Thanks for your positive review. We are glad you found your travel to and from Bruny Island was a smooth one. Queuing over the summer period can occur however we are moving more cars per hour than ever before. Regarding your comment with "travellers" - alcohol is prohibited at the terminal and onboard our vessels. Safety on our roads and onboard is our number one priority. - wombatdavidHobart, Australia2,683 contributionsExpensive ferry transfer but they got us there and back safelyIf you want to take your car to Bruny Island, then this is your option! You pay a hefty price these days for the 10 minute ride. Just gone up to $53 unless you are a BI resident which is $18. The new ferries are OK but we don't like the narrow corridor for cars on one side.Hi there, Thanks for your constructive feedback. We do offer saver and super saver rates which provide a discount on the regular price. You can see when these fares are on offer by heading to our website. Easy and not crowded when we travelled on Sunday. BEWARE!! Booking online will cost $34 more for car and caravan than if you pay at the gate!! Not happy to say the least. Website DOES NOT explain this anywhere I can find despite being told this info is on the website!! Need to do better SeaLink

Ferry is fast and efficient once you are on board.
BUT as there are no bookings you cannot guarantee when you are going to get on.
We arrived at 12:15 last Thursday and finally got on the 2pm ferry. The staff worked through their lunch to add an additional service.
Coming back was chaotic. The cars already there were in lane 2 so we followed behind. 6 cars didn't make the ferry and we had to wait for the next one at 1pm. There was no one directing cars so arriving drivers started randomly filling lanes 1,2 and 3. Lane 1 was the first allowed on - even though most of lane 2 were there first and half of lane 3. Luckily the larger ferry arrived and we got on - but it appeared to be just luck. The sooner you bring on bookings the better - at least we know we are guaranteed a crossing.

We enjoyed our Day trip to Bruny Island to and from Kettering. We had not booked in advance and just paid Sealink on arrival. In peak times it may be necessary to book online first. But we went in the off-season. The ferry service was seamless and short. No problems with the crossing at all. Weather on Bruny was sunny but a but cold and windly. Definitely recommend at least a day trip there, but you can also stay a few days on the island to explore its features at a more leisurely pace.

Crossed on the ferry with our bus tour/cruise group. Good Friday morning and it seemed as if everyone was headed to Bruny Island. Our bus driver informed us that the majority of vehicles were headed there for the Easter weekend. Very efficient operation by the SeaLink team and some half hour after arrival we were heading off on our Island excursion. Less traffic on the return leg, a slower ferry and time to enjoy views of the harbour area.

Just drive up buy a ticket ( only returns sold) ferry every 20 minutes join the queue and hope you get on first boat other wise just 20 minutes until it gets back to go again. Slick operation as there is only one ferry they get you on and off so quick. Only 10 minute or so trip. When you reurn you just drive into queue as they dont sell tickets the other way. Lot of roads on Bruny island are unmade so with a hire car we were not supposed to do unmade roads so fair bit we did not get to see.

Trouble-free journey from Kettering across to Bruny Island. We booked online prior to arrival. There are no set booking times - just line up and get on the next ferry. Be aware that during peak times there is high demand and the ferry only holds 20 - 30 vehicles at a time. You are encouraged to stay in your vehicle for the 20min journey, however there is a passenger 'lounge' to utilise if you desire.

Great trip over to Maria Island on ferry. Plenty of room and there is a cafe on board. It was a bit of a rough trip on day we went but not too bad and only takes 20 minutes or so to get over there.
Only thing I would say was when we were all waiting late afternoon to get back on ferry, it was cold, wet and windy on this day, but ferry operator would not let us on the ferry earlier than the scheduled time to board which was a pain as we were all soaked and freezing cold. Thought they might have at least let us on to sit in the warmth but apart from that, would recommend.

We didn't do much research before embarking on a day trip to Bruny Island. We weren't too sure what to expect with the ferry service, whether it would be a long wait or sold out etc. We got to Kettering and joined a queue of cars. Within 10 minutes we we had paid via card and driven onto the ferry. About 20 minute trip across and we were driving on Bruny Island. Having used similar services in QLD, I was really surprised and happy with the efficiency of the ferry.

There are 2 ferries running in tandem, so each 20 minutes apart. But we waited for almost 2 hours in our car, to get on a ferry, which accommodates 40 cars, on a Wednesday late morning hoped for, and early afternoon succeeded. As a result, we couldn't make the planned Bruny Island Wilderness Boat Tour we'd booked.
Because we kept the tour operators apprised of our situation, they were kind enough to offer a refund; not be expected, because this, as they believed, was a rare situation not of our making.
Bottom line, don't risk it - give yourself a lot of time to catch whatever ferry you were hoping for!

Hi, I will be visiting Bruny Island, wondering if I can just go there past afternoon around 3pm and buy the ticket at the site, is that possible?
And I will stay for 2 nights in adventures bay, does the ticket still eligible for the return trip once I buy from the first day?
Written June 6, 2024
Hi there, yes the ticket can be purchased at the terminal. The tickets are a return fare.

Hi I'm thinking of going to bring island I have not much reception so it's hard to find my answer but do you need a car to explore brunny island
? Cab you take a bus on the island or are you able to walk around it
Written February 3, 2019
you will definitely need a car on Bruny Island. Best to hire a car in Hobart & take it on the ferry.

I’m planning to visit Bruny Island in mid January. Is it peak season then? how early should I reach Kettering if I want to make it for the 830 ferry bearing in mind there may be a queue?
Written December 30, 2018
Hi purpledino,
Further to my previous reply to your inquiry about getting the Bruny Ferry from Kettering.
As I indicated you need to get either ferry early as you can for Bruny Island, traffic to the island has been incredible certainly make inquiries in advance for the best day to travel there.
See a news item from the ABC just on Thursday 3rd January record number of vehicles trying to get the island for trip.
I have been going to the island for many years when living in Hobart, with my relatives on the island.

Are the Christmas-NewYear (22-Dec Sat to 06-Jan Sun) time overly crowded for the Bruny Island Ferry?
Do wait times go over 1 hour?
Do Bus tours have preference? Is it better to go by Bus tour than self drive?
Written September 17, 2018
yes,you will have to wait 1-2 hours in the queue and you cant go anywhere as youll need to be able to move your car up the queue.
There is a cafe there with toilets. But not much else.
i dont think buses get priority,I hired a car and was able to drive everywhere.Just make sure your hire car company allows you to drive on the island-and it is a lot bigger than you think, with at least 1/2 drive from the ferry dock to the main attractions,so give yourself lots of time for the return.

I am planning a visit on 3 oct 2018 and they seem to be changing ferry company.
My question is how early must I get there say if I would like to take the 10am ferry ? If I reach 9.30am can I board the ferry with my car?
Thanks

!0 or 15 minutes before should sufficient. You need to buy your ticket at the booth before boarding the ferry. That ticket covers your return trip also.

We left Hobart early and caught the 07:30 ferry.
Arrived 30 minutes early, well set out queing lines and staff to direct.
A quick coffee while waiting and then soon loaded.
Enjoy, it's a great experience and destination!

I went earlier this year and if you only wanted to wait 1/2 hour you'd best get the 7.30am ferry, especially if it's school holidays.
I had to wait 1.5 hrs and missed the 10am

The 3rd being a week day you should be okay. Don’t try the for the return trip if you’re thinking of staying all day, the end of the day ferry lines are long we had to wait for the second one you could easily get stuck on the island if you leave too late.
