Derby is the small town with a big story. For a time it was the richest tin mine in the world. Water was the energy source, and to keep it coming, the company built water races and then a dam above the town. The inspectors said the dam would never fail. But in April 1929 it rained for five days straight, culminating in a final downpour of 5 inches in just two hours.

Tin Dragon Cafe and Interpretation Centre will be closed on Wednesdays and Fridays in May and June 2014. In May the Centre will open between 10am and 4pm, and in June the Centre will open between 10am and 3pm. All bookings and enquiries can be made directly to the Tin Dragon Cafe and Interpretation Centre or to Dorset Council.

Well worth a visit to gain an understanding of the history of mining in this area.

Pleasantly surprised at this extremely interesting museum, very informative. Also thoroughly enjoyed the cafe within the museum, crank it cafe. Enjoyed a delicious bacon and egg roll on a soft rosemary roll, with a homemade ginger and blueberry slice to follow. Well worth a visit 😊

There is a small museum with a number of posters explaining the history & use of tin but the main attraction is a very large audio visual presentation of the history of tin mining in the area. There is a charge of about $6, the 20 minute video was surprisingly well done. Especially interesting was the importance of water to... More

As a bit of background - Didn't have time to do the museum/interpretation bit. We had driven through Derby a couple of days previously and wasn't going to come back this way but we rather liked the look of things on the main road and came back for a look). So we stopped in for morning tea. Coffee had been... More

The museum about tin mining in Derby is an outstanding attraction for a small town. The history and the great disaster and flood is facinating. The massive screen brings the whole story to life.

Derby is a delightful country town on "The Tin Dragon Trail" with much character, scenery and a lot of history, much of it based on it's incredible mining heritage. A visit to The Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre is worth at least half an hour of anyone's time - the audio-visual presentation is simply one of the most stunning we have... More

I've passed Derby before so many times without stopping to do more than grab supplies at the corner store. But recently when travelling up the North-East Coast we made a point of stopping and heading into the Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre. I had no idea how much history was involved behind the small village, something which surprised me greatly. It... More

A great audio visual presentation of a part of the areas tin mining history. The Cascadr Dam break in1929 destroyed the tin mining industry with significant loss of life. As well as the video presentation, the static displays provide much information on the development of tin in the preserved food industry ... going back to Naoleonic times.

Plenty of things to check out at this stop over for all travellers. It is very bike friendly particularly with the mountain bike & road bike department . Lots of bike repair paraphernalia. The breakfast was very good value & the service was excellent
