We stayed on one of the 5 star spa boats in December 2021 for 3 nights. We were two adults and 3 children (although the boat takes 10). I think my holiday experience would have been improved if I'd known what to bring along on this trip, but we have learned for next time! The website seemed to be down in terms of photos when I last checked, but I was able to view photos earlier in the year. It is as advertised, with 5 queen rooms, each with ensuite, and the rooms are very comfortable. The kitchen is large and spacious, the spa is great fun. We couldn't get the DVD player to work in the main living area but they did work in the bedrooms.

There was wear and tear that we felt could have been fixed simply and would add to the value of the boats - blinds broken, or torn etc. The electrics failed twice, and we got instructions from the company on how to reset the fuse box.

The Hawkesbury is just gorgeous, and we did have good weather. We hired a motorised tender to visit beaches and creeks etc. I would recommend this over rowing as the currents are really quite strong in parts.

Some tips: the boat is bizarrely well equipped in some aspects and lacking in others. For example, they have a nespresso machine, plumbed fridge, bluetooth speakers for all sections of the boat. There is even a laundry. But there is not a bar or drop of hand soap! If I was going again I would bring all your toiletries (they do supply washing up detergent for the kitchen), coffee pods, box tissues. The ice box is huge and I only bought 2 bags of ice which melted rapidly (I would bring more if you're planning on staying on there and utilising the icebox, which I only used for bait). Bait is available to purchase at the marina. Bring DVDs, the TV reception is not great. We brought a inflatable toy that the kids would climb onto attached to the back of the boat when we had anchored. It was a good way of getting them safely into the water when they wanted a swim.

My husband loved the trip - he would have no hesitation going back. I enjoyed it too, and now I know what to expect I will enjoy it more the next time.

The houseboat we booked was the Ultimate Spa.
We has 6 nights on a beautiful boat in May 2021, just after severe floods.
This boat was very well equipped and a pleasure to be on.
A couple of problems arose but phone calls 'back to base' were answered and problems very quickly solved by the lovely and knowledgeable young men from the boat yard.
The spa on the top was a huge hit, very pleasant way to spend time having a drink and a relaxing chat.
We never got either of the TV's to work which probably made for an even better trip!
Very good experience on a lovely boat on the fabulous Hawkesbury River.

Hired an 8 sleeper houseboat for the family for two nights. Whilst the experience of sleeping and waking on the river is really great, the boat itself was dirty and full of spiders. With only two smallish beds I would say 4 people max could sleep comfortably. Again, experience great- but hard to enjoy when the boat is full of spiderwebs and spiders in every room- clearly has not been cleaned properly or looked after.

Firstly the boat was advertised for 2-4 people. My partner and I rented the vessel for 3 nights and my partner is 187cm tall. His feet were hanging outside the bed with approximately 30cm from one of the beds and the second bed was no stable enough to sleep on. The motor was difficult to start each time and it broke down fully one morning, and we were stuck for 3 hours before someone could come and fix the motor which was leaking oil. The toilet didn't flush (we didn't use much toilet paper) and the smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night. On top of this, we used the attached rowboat to get to shore (to use the toilet) and the oar broke while we were on our way back to the boat. Everything was extremely old, which we don't mind, if everything is functioning. When we brought this up with the renters, and kindly asked for a discount on a different boat in the future, since we wanted to come back (we did not ever ask for a refund, which we probably should have done!) they told us we were lucky that they hadn't charged us for the toilet and the oar ($180 + $55)!! We would not recommend this rental to anyone and we won't come back again.

Although we had a great time with friends, the state of the houseboat was terrible and the smell worse.

We are positive that we didn't run the engine for more than 5 hours yet we were charged for using 10 and accused of being of a certain religion for saying otherwise...

The entire setup of Able House Boats was akin to a circus and their crew are pure carny folk with the intent to rip off customers at every opportunity...

Beware of the old lady... she is the ring leader!

While it was a lovely time away with family, the customer service, cleanliness and condition of the houseboat left a lot to be desired. We could have accepted having to wait a few hours before we could leave because the tv was broken. Basic maintenance has not been completed like broken fly screens and blinds. We had to tie one of the the outside gates shut so my niece was safe. The fish finder was broken so we could not tell the depth of the water for the anchor. None of the TV's in the bedroom worked. The kitchen was not clean. To top it off we ran out of water on the second day because the tank wasn't filled before we left, so we spent just over 3 hours waiting for the tank to be filled. We were blamed for using too much water and treated like we are stupid, no apologies or discount was offered. There was absolutely no way we could have used that much water in a day and a half. Would not recommend at all.

Had overseas guests visiting so we thought we'd take them out for a few nights to show off our fabulous country, especially the Hawkesbury River.
Having hired canal boats overseas and having great time doing this, thought we'd try Able Houseboats.
Boat condition upon arrival was the start.
Musty, only a few curtains, parts quite dirty, paint peeling, look at the photo of the head (toilet).
Items that were listed on web not on boat.
Mosquitos screens with holes in them.
I could go on & on.

Headed off down stream for the night.
No-one got sleep due to insects flying around and we stoped counting spiders and their nests after 30!!
Absolute disgrace and I'm amazed they have a license to operate from the Health and Transport departments.

Paying TOP DOLLAR for this was our worst ever tourist experience anywhere in Australia or elsewhere.

Strongly recommend trying elsewhere before you suffer the same fate we did!

My partner and I spent the most relaxing 3 nights 4 days on a small houseboat. It had everything we needed. Cooking facilities, fridge and comfy bed. Manouvering the boat around the hawkesbury was easy and spent lovely nights in private anchorages. The booking process was easy. A fantastic experience although we werent to successful with the fishing.

We have previously hired boats on British and French canals, and sailing yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, so have some idea of what to expect from a hire boat. Our 6 berth "Super" houseboat from Hawkesbury Houseboats was far from "super" though and was the worst boat in our hiring experience.

The boat itself was presented in a tatty and dirty condition. Mismatching curtains, crockery, and glasses added to the sense of gloom. The linen we hired from them (we were traveling from the UK so had no possibility of bringing our own bedding) was also mismatched and had stains and marks of dubious heritage. Why was there no tea towel for drying dishes included I wonder?

On the outside of the boat the light on the life ring didn't work and there were rusty screw heads sticking through the fibreglass on the upper deck. Our outside table had 3 white legs and 1 green, and the outdoor chairs were dirty and again mismatched. There were random brackets around the boat seemingly for equipment that was no longer there - again adding to the depressing feel of the boat.

We had problems with both outboard engines, and despite calling their mechanics out twice, still had starting and cutting-out problems when we brought the boat back. The rev counters were unreliable and when we asked what two dials were on the console we were told "don't know". The water gauge stayed on "full" for the whole 4 day trip - a bit suspicious with 3 ladies washing their hair and 1 man on board. I suspect the engine starting problems had something to do with the batteries, because at night time the cabin lights were woefully inadequate to read by, and the electric pump on the loo wouldn't work without using both batteries at once.

I noticed a bilge pump, but couldn't find a handle. Also on the safety side, the boat didn't appear to have a gas alarm - rather disconcerting considering there was a gas heater and a gas fridge in the cabin - both on at all times. Regarding the fridge, the one fitted didn't seem to fit properly and the heat from the gas mechanism came out into the cabin. Not really what you want when it's 30-40C outside! We complained to the engineer that the fridge wasn't very cold and he gave the excuse that the weather was hot! Exactly! Thats' when you need a cold fridge!

Our briefing about the boat and the river was very poor - there seemed to be more concern as to whether we had the resources to pay for the fuel on our return. The office was dirty and messy and a 15litre container of water we took was given to us unsealed.

On return I was able to negotiate a discount because of the engine problems we'd encountered, but I'd much rather have paid the full price for a quality boating holiday. Hawkesbury Houseboats need to get a lot of things sorted out, otherwise they don't deserve to stay in business.

Regarding the Hawkesbury river itself it is certainly beautiful and remote. The tidal flow can be quite fast, and as anchoring is the norm (rather than mooring up), the option of the outboard on the dinghy was useful. There aren't many places to go ashore and eat or drink, so plan for eating on board most of the time. Swimming is a great way of getting some relief if its very hot, but we encountered lots of large jellyfish downstream of Wisemans, so beware.

I rented a house boat from Able Hawksbury House Boats two years ago but I'm still upset thinking about it. We booked a boat to fit 10 people and paid a lot of money for a weekend - $2000. What we got was a terribly run down, old smelly boat that had 4 beds. Apparently the other six people were expected to sleep on the floor and a few outside on the deck which may have been theoretically possible. No mattresses or lines provided of course. A few of the guests showed up late and they charged those guests $100 to take them on a 3 minute boat ride to catch up with the rest.

We were charged $20 per car per night to park o their property. They charged $50 per bag of ice and even more for fuel for the boats. When we returned the boat the tried charging us $2000 for the Dingy that came loose during the night and floated away from the main boat. When arguing about paying that much for a Dingy that would never cost more than $200 we caught them trying to hide the Dingy from us behind their garage. Apparently they found it during the night and now they tried to steal money from us.

The people running the business were incredibly rude and completely incapable of anything except trying to figure out ways to rip you off. Their boats are awful and I would say that this business is pretty darn close to being a scam.
