About
The Littlehampton Ferry is the best way to cross the River Arun. It links the East and West banks of the River Arun in Littlehampton. It operates between Town Quay & The Littlehampton Yacht Club. We can carry up to 12 passengers and dogs go for free! Hours of Operation Open every day during school holidays & weekends if it's not too wet and windy. Ferry will run roughly every 20 mins or when full. There is no stop off at Arundel. Up to 5 harbour trips per day (these can be booked in advance and times may vary) Parking There is parking on the West bank at the Littlehampton Yacht Club and on the East side at the Green (West) for up to 1 hour. Please pay the ferry skipper for parking at the Littlehampton Yacht Club. Harbour Tours The ferry also operates harbour tours of Littlehampton. The Passengers are informed of the local history of the area, the shipbuilding and local attractions and wildlife are pointed out. About The Ferry This is the 5th year in operation and is a joint venture between the Littlehampton Town Council, the Littlehampton Yacht Club, Robert Boyce and the East/West Beach Cafes. The ferry service links the town centre with the sandy beaches, golf course and yacht clubs on the West bank of the River Arun. The boat was specifically sourced in Florida in the US and was shipped over to the UK to become the first and only one of its kind to operate in the UK. It is a pontoon boat that is very stable and capable of carrying 12 passengers (and skipper) and is run over the holidays and summer months. There is luxury seating for 12 and a sun canopy. There are dedicated pontoons on either side of the river for easy access. The ferry can carry buggies, bikes and well behaved dogs. There are 2 easy access gates so passengers can step aboard with ease. There is disabled access from both the East and West Banks. Please contact us in advance to discuss your requirements.

Wasted our time
Aug 2021 • Family
We tried to go on a harbour tour, and the skipper advised us to wait 5 minutes while he made a ferry crossing and changed into some shorts. We patiently waited 25 minutes and he eventually returned. However, we could not board for the harbour tour because a bunch of people turned up who had 'prebooked online'. There was not enough room for us, so we had waited all that time for nothing which was very disappointing. The only thing the skipper told us that was accurate was that he changed into shorts.

Total lack of respect for disabilities

Me and my family of 6 wanted to cross the river as one of our party had reduced mobility and couldn’t walk. The driver said he was doing a harbour tour and to come back in 25 minutes, we waited patiently for 25 minutes and instead ge decided to run a second harbour tour and told us to come back in another 25 minutes. We ended up having to cancel our plans completely and go home. Totally unreliable and unfair.

Cruise the fastest River in Southern England
Jun 2018 • Family
A brilliant little ferry to take you from the bustle of the East side of the River Arun, with its fantastic new Promenade and the myriad of fish and Chip Shops, it is the Seaside after all, to the clam on the West Beach side. When you get off the ferry, look through the chain fence in front of you for views of the recently uncovered first Palmerston Fort built on the South Coast. On the way back on the Ferry ask about the trips around the harbour, well worth doing. For a special treat you can hire the ferry to take you and 11 Friends up to and back to Arundel, you could have party on board.

Cruising across the fastest river in Southern England
Sep 2017 • Family
Well you are at the seaside and have had an ice cream, fish and chips and a walk on the prom, so next try out the ferry when it is working, it is only a short trip unless you want a trip around the harbour or a special charter for the boat with 10-12 people and you can go up to Arundel and back. When you are on the other side explore the big West Beach area and maybe take a walk up the sand dunes to peer over to the Fort which is gradually being excavated from the large amount of sand and bracken that has blown over it since Victorian time.

A Leisurely 20 minute Ferry Ride
Aug 2017 • Couples
After a long walk from town me, my wife and pet dog Shadow were heading towards the beach from the Look and Sea Harbour Lights Cafe.

We saw the advertising for the ferry trip and decided to have a ride to pass on 20 minutes of our visit to Littlehampton.

The cost was cheap £2 across to the other side and £5 for the harbour trip.
Great for value for money and dogs go free.

False advertising
Aug 2017 • Couples
Happy to take your money if your doing the tour, possibly somewhat un interested if you want to get a ferry across the river . Definitely need some way of telling passengers that after waiting 20 minutes the people who want to do the tour have priority.

Hi, I'm sorry you had a disappointing experience on the ferry. Negative feedback such as "false advertising" is untrue as we advertise that we run both as a Ferry for river crossings and harbour tours. We have to run both as a Ferry and harbour tours to make ends meet. This is not a very profitable business and runs only with the help and support of Littlehampton Town Council. Please let me know what day you travelled as I will speak to the skipper as normally we try take the ferry passengers as a priority as generally people going on a harbour tour are happy to wait an extra 5 mins whilst we drop off a ferry load of passengers to the other side or they come aboard too (depending on numbers) for an extra 5 minutes added to their tour by going to the other side first. This is not always possible if the Ferry is very busy and if you are wanting to use the ferry to cross the river for just one or 2 people. We are trying to run a business that makes makes a profit AND keep our all customers happy! It's a very difficult balance but we do try very hard. Thank you for your understanding. I hope you will use the ferry again and have a better experience. Regards Fiona

Thank you for taking the time to review the Ferry. Yes, we are limited by the weather. We live in England after all and the weather open stops play! We cannot safely run in the pouring rain or strong winds no do people want to travel then. The trips to Arundel on the Ferry have always been private hire as it's commerically unviable to take say just 2 people to Arundel and back for a small fee so you need to book the whole boat and we can take up to 12 passengers any evening we have availabilty. The trip to Arundel is minimum 90 mins and we have to pay the skipper for their time, fuel, oil and other running costs. The trip works out at £15 per head which we think is good value for a lovely evening trip with friends or family. You are welcome to bring drinks onboard to celebrate a special occasion and you can stop off at Arundel by prior arrangement. Everyone who has taken this trip has thoroughly enjoyed it. (Perhaps you were thinking of the "Belle" or "Kingfisher Cruises" that offered the Arundel and back trip for £20 per head but both have since gone bust!) The river crossing price was £2 per head in 2015. In 2016, we trialled a reduced price to encourage more passengers to come aboard. Sadly with fuel & oil prices, wages, insurance, imported parts, engine repairs, new seats costs etc going up year on year, we had to increase our (lowered) 2016 prices from £1 back to £2 for an adult. Children are still only £1 and dogs go free. This is a service run for the benefit of the locals and visitors to Littlehampton. It is part funded by a grant from Littlehampton Town Council. Where else can you get a super comfortable boat trip across a river for £2 or less? As far as I know, nowhere. Please be supportive of the local businesses. We try extremely hard to make Littlehampton a better place for all those who visit, work and live here. As we've always said... use it or lose it! There may not even be a ferry next year for you to complain about. You'll have to walk to West beach instead.

Charon eat your heart out!!
Jul 2017 • Friends
When I hear the word ferry I am transported back to Latin lessons centuries ago where as a lad I battled with the graphic descriptions of Aeneas's decent into the underworld (praise be for the Penguin Classics Translation) held under the desk. I remember the vivid portrayal of Charon - the ferryman taking the recently departed across the Styx to the underworld and pushing away those whose sins condemned them to eternal hell on the near bank!
How different though the ferry on the Arun on a summer night in July. Comfy seats, spacious with a quiet engine we made our way upstream to Arundel in a most pleasant fashion.
The birds were out in force : gulls - naturally, but these were accompanied by herons, egrets, turnstones, oystercatchers, comorants and starlings who were murmurating at regular intervals during our trip.
From what I remember of Charon he was rather a taciturn chap - not quite the life and soul of the party - yet our ferryman was regularly pointing out the wildlife to be seen.
Either for a quick trip from one side of the river to the other or a bimble up to Arudel a trip on the ferry is not to be missed. Beats the stygian miasma on a Monday morning all those years ago.
