This sculpture at the entrance of Old London Road in the centre of Kingston can’t be missed! Fantastic idea to reuse some classic old English phone booths. I really like it and couldn’t resist the temptation to take photos from various points of view seeing it in the sunshine. I’ve also seen many other people take photos and selfies with it… some even climbing up on top of the sculpture. It’s great fun and a must see! Further good news: there are some benches in the immediate vicinity to take a seat and watch it in the sun just outside Wilko.

One of things that I love about being British is our endless opportunities to make fun of ourselves.

The telephone boxes are famous the world over and are often seen in peoples gardens.

Turning them like dominoes onto a cascade is an inspired use of a British icon.

The bright red colours and unique shape really helps me and my mates reconvene after a night out (in another iconic Kingston landmark... PRYZM!!)

The shape and style remind me of something else, can't quite pinpoint it? Could've had a bit more creativity from the artist but maybe that's my obnoxious millennial innate attitude. I have expensive taste what can I say?

By the way, this landmark also has dual purpose, I did once see some people playing Pokemon Go there! Looked like an absolute hoot! Think they must have been catching some awesome Pokemons. Feel like it could be a great place to meet new people and create some new friends (would be great for me as I'm a bit lonesome during lockdown). Will deffo be heading back after Bozza lifts the lockdown!

Hope this is helpful, have a tendency to overshare!! Maybe see u there! (pardon the rhyme hehe) x

This is worth a walk to see. It’s interesting street art you can touch! Lovely safe setting. No cost to see. It’s tucked away a bit but worth a look! A statement and art work all in one

The 'Out of Order' art installation by David Mach in the centre of Kingston upon Thames comes as a surprise to those who are not expecting to see such a sight in the middle of the shopping area. It is totally unique and raised quite a lot of interest whilst I was in the area. Whilst it possibly not a must see it is worth viewing whilst in Central Kingston.

The red telephone box has been around since the 1920s, and is a bit of a British icon. Find one of them these days, and you’re more likely to find a bunch of tourists having their photographs taken in it or beside it, rather than someone actually using it. The advent of the smart phone is certainly bringing about their demise. So it’s good to find that a whole bunch of them have been preserved for future generations to marvel at this ‘thing from the olden days’, albeit in the form of a curious sculpture with a very appropriate name: “Out of Order”.

Put twelve red (K6) telephone boxes in the hands of well-known Scottish sculptor David Mach, and he comes up with this large-scale (and permanent) installation in the middle of a suburban street. It’s a sweeping, flowing structure depicting the 12 phone boxes in various stages of lean, curving in a gentle arch from upright to almost horizontal. It’s typical David Mach, making use of mss produced objects (such a coat hangers, and matchsticks, and old phone boxes), to create fabulous flowing assemblages. You’ll either love it or hate it. I think it’s wonderful! It’s been in situ for nearly 30 years, so I guess the novelty of it for the locals has worn off, and it’s seen as part of the local streetscape.

It’s in Kingston Upon Thames, a pretty corner of southwest London on the Thames, but it’s well out of Central London. A train from London Waterloo to Kingston will get you there between 30 and 45 minutes. The sculpture is a short walk from Kingston rail station; take the curving street to the left as you exit the station, and you’ll see the installation just beyond the Wilko store. You can’t miss it! For its age, and being a prime target for children (and adults!!!) to sit on, or play on, or climb on, it’s in surprisingly good shape. I think it was given a good clean and maybe a paint job fairly recently.

Kingston is a lovely metropolitan are within the Greater London Area, so if you’re making the trip down there to see ‘Out of Order’, it’s probably ’in order’ to see some of the other sights Kingston has to offer: the Clattern Bridge (one of London’s oldest bridges); a lovely old market place, and pretty walks (and dining opportunities) along the River Thames.

I know this is only an art sculpture but these days (especially for the younger generation) the good old telephone box will be a thing of the past. It's a bit random as to where it is but still pretty cool.

It's a series of red telephone boxes that have fallen over in a dominoes effect outside Wilkinsons. Worth a look but not sure if there's any information about it. Feels like there should be more of these art installations around Kingston but sadly there's not.

This is a great piece of art slap bang in the middle of a busy shopping area. If you are a tourist who wants to see something quintessenially British (and a good photo op) then come and see British phone boxes that were once on every street corner in London but have now all disappeared. Kingston is a great place too, with fantastic shopping and restaurants and the river close by (again with great restaurants and green spaces.) Lovely!
