Hmm – time to set the record straight here. Woodies is probably the most quirky privately-owned Free House (independent pub) I have ever visited in the UK. Dirty Dicks in London used to have a similar atmosphere, but this ex-cricket pavilion (overlooking King’s College playing grounds in leafy New Malden) simply takes the cake.

For beer aficionados (I’m in summer cider mode myself), I believe it is listed in the local CAMRA guide and is well regarded with 7 real Ales on offer. Later this month the number increases to about 50 offerings as part of their annual beer festival.

What makes it so quirky and unique? For starters, it is hidden away, not far from the A3 (the UK’s busiest A road, linking London with Portsmouth). There is plenty of parking available and Berrylands railway station is just over the playing fields if you prefer public transport. I can’t think of any bus route nearby.

Next, it has just had the large patio area in front covered and converted into a comfortable and pleasant beer garden. I think this will develop nicely as a haven in all weathers.

The biggest feature is inside the main building, which as I said is an old cricket pavilion. It is just a revelation – an Aladdin's cave of sporting and theatre memorabilia that must give the local Fire Officer palpitations every time he inspects. Honestly, it has to be seen to be believed.

Add to this mix affordable beers and some of the best home-cooked meals I have ever tasted out of a pub, and there you have it. I don’t exaggerate. The Sunday carvery (for £7.00 a head) alone is worth diverting off the A3 for and the quality of the food is self-evident. I noted that the catering (personally led by the licensee) was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 5 (Very Good) by the Council inspectors after their last visit in May...

There are also weekend BBQs and soon the pub will be holding its annual beer festival, which I think can get a little raucous. I have the T-Shirt ready (£5) and intend to drop by and find out.

It is a local pub and if you are visiting from afar and want to get a unique and authentic suburban experience, you could do far worse than visit here. Expect to find friendly locals, large screen TVs showing Sports, fruit machines, occasional live music and events like quiz nights. I really hope you won’t be disappointed.

Used this pub for many years but since the new managers come in, things have changed so much, food not as good and prices much higher, one one occasion I saw food go back 3 times, wrong items, food cold etc etc, the new manager never looks at you to say hello, or even a smile. It is such a shame as this was always busy but not anymore.

Staff so helpful. Very good venue with reasonably priced buffet and drinks. Good conservatory and outside area set aside for us. Tables etc well-arranged and set up for sitting, eating, DJ and dance floor. Also accommodated our photo booth. Also kept our cars safe in their car park overnight. Would use again. Love this place with its fantastic collection of memorabilia and wooden beams.

We used to love this place but it's been going down hill for a few years now. Unfriendly owner/manager seems to hate children unless they're with regulars.

Recently tried it again as they've had an extension built, the extension was alright but the beer and food were expensive and the staff attitude is still unfriendly. The new car parking barrier/token system is complicated for the sake of it too, I know they probably had some illegal parkers at times but this just puts you off visiting.

Went here today waited ages to get served only 3 customers in whole bar area. When I was eventually served the glass was filthy around the top so I asked for another one The toilet smelled like it hadn't been clean for a week. The thing that I could not understand was that this excuse for a pub had a barrier when you round the corner to park with big signs all over the place telling you that if you park here and don't come into this pub it will cost you £ 25 payable to us to release your car that we have barriered in.So be nice to the landlord when complaining if your car is still in their car park or it could be a costly moan.Stay clear much better pub's near by that don't imprison your car.check out the photo what a cheek

Have been coming down to woodies for years and to be honest I have been really disappointed with my experiences recently ..mainly with the new bar staff who are very rude..I went down for the beer festival in august and yes it is busy it always is..but the women bar staff who are new have no customer service experience at all they are very rude and I experienced this first hand ... I went down today for Sunday dinner with a big party the food is outstanding it always is but yet again the bar staff were rude and to be honest has really put me off coming down here again..I don't know what's happened with the recent recruitment of staff here but really not good and I can go else where to drink and give money to. Such a shame as Linda always seems to run a good ship but not sure what's going on here

Saturday night, pub not too busy, decent beer, prices OK but why on earth would any landlord allow a group of people to sit outside his/her pub whilst singing badly and swearing loudly. I have in the past been here in the early evening and even brought my children as sitting outside was pleasant but never again I'm afraid I simply won't take that risk. The pub is in a decent area but it was spoilt by a large group of pissed punters. Landlord sort out what sort of pub you want to run as if my visit was an indication of how it is every night then I'm sure the local residents can't wait for licence renewal time.

Had a toasted sandwich, which was OK..
The plate would have looked much better with some garnish, along with the few chips that we were served.

Came here a few years ago and the food was excellent with an exciting eclectic atmosphere.
Now there's plenty of room to breath with no queing for for food, but quite frankly, no wonder!

Food prices are up on the ambitious side while portions are down to children's size. The brussels sprouts were so bad that not one of the 11 of us could eat any of them, and the rest of the veg was over cooked.
Very sad to see such a decline in quality and atmosphere in what used to be one of my favourite little places.
