It is strange to look at a map of Epsom Common and see that there is a circular area of housing in the centre. The history is that, from around 1700, this was one of England's earliest spas, focused on the well which still exists in this unlikely location.

The origins of the spa at Epsom, and of Epsom Salts go back to 1618 when a farmer called Henry Wicker discovered the water source, which his cattle would not drink from, and the water became famous for its therapeutic properties.

Further wells followed, plus other new buildings such as the Assembly Rooms, which still exists as a pub in Epsom itself.

From the late 1600's, Epsom Salts were readily available in chemists and other shops and gradually the spa declined, with the well here to remind us of this piece of history.

Epsom Common itself it a natural wildlife habitat focused on a number of ponds and goes back many centuries as common land.

On the edge of the Common is Christ Church designed by the architect Arthur Blomfield and consecrated on Wednesday 18 October 1876 by the Bishop of Winchester.

I am lucky enough to live across the road from here so I can enjoy it 24/7.
Nice place to meet people and watch the occasional deer run past.

I have been here only twice this summer. The commons are good for those who have a canine on a leash. I love the noticeboard at the start of the trail. If you are into photography you can even take some photos.

Lots of nice trees to look at and sketch too and the scenery is beautiful. I would recommend it. A chance to escape from daily life. I have even seen people picnic here on the grass in front of the commons. A tip take a pair of wellies when it is wet and a camera too on dry days. Also take a pencil if you want to draw something whilst on your walk.

Lovely place to walk, and take photos. The trails are quiet easy to follow as well and it’s very easy to get to.

Pituresque Epsom and Ashtead Common
They are joined by large tracks
There is parking in a few locations depending on your route.
This is a wonderful place for many, dog walkers, walkers, cyclists, photographers etc.
We always take some hot coffee, as there are no refreshments.
A definite take wellies and a spare pair of warm socks in the winter.
Catch the sun as it gets pretty cold when the sun is not out.
Enjoy all seasons as the tranquility when in the quieter areas is divine, just the sound of the birds dancing in your head.
There are literally miles of walks again depending on your fitness, kids will love it too.

Very much a dog walking area albeit not without some parts of interest like the lake. It can be a bit muddy .so avoid wet days

It can get a bit muddy so you may want to wear walking boots. Nice walk past a pond. Several dog walkers and joggers around. Clear signposts.

A beautiful space both calm and tranquil. Walking the dog here was a treat. It was slightly overcast and that probably explained the lack of people. I thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Was trying to find a central location to meet with a friend and our two teenagers and my dogs.
Have lived in Surrey for 20 years and never ventured to Epsom common before, it was a great walk around the lake and reserve.
Easy to access, park and navigate.
Lots of dog friendly folk we met and a really nice atmosphere.
Great place to get out into the fresh air!
