About
A truly British event, the Epsom Derby is known as ‘the greatest flat race in the world'. Having taken place each June since 1779, it has an old world feel, which is probably why hundreds still throw on their finest, fascinators and all, to watch the thoroughbred colts and fillies race the mile-long track. Taking place in Surrey, on the Epsom Downs, it is known as the most prestigious and richest event out of the five classic UK horse races. This means that, with a television audience, it’s a must-attend event for celebs - even Charles Dickens is rumoured to have once enjoyed a trackside viewing. Literary genius or not, anyone can purchase a ticket and throw on their grandma’s pearls for a day at the races.

I first visited the Derby Week in 1948 with my father when the Sunday prior to the Wednesday DERBY to see the fair, watch the Gypsy boxers take on all comers for 10 bob and Prince Honolulu selling tips with his cry of "I've got a horse"
All free
Now the 21st century has turned the whole event into a commercial enterprise even taking the fairground away at Tattenham Corner (How did we live before H/S or Pc)
But if you still feel adventurous you can walk into the centre of the track feel the atmosphere but don't be tempted to take the odds from Bmks unless they take SP

A great weekend end with a great bunch of guys, a big improvement on the last 12 years as didn't see any evidence of drug use ( well done Epsom) only negative was the choice of the DJ playing absolute CRAP, as most of the crowd looked to be over 35 l would have thought 60s, 70s, & 80s music would have been a better choice, finally a big slap on the back to the Police & Stewards who handled the protesters especially the guy who rugby tackled a protester to the ground.

Having never been horse racing, yet living in Surrey surrounded by racecourses, I decided to celebrate my 50th birthday on 4th June at the Investec Epsom Derby. My husband, 2 daughters in their twenties and I had a lovely day.
Travelled to Epsom by train and shared a cab to the racecourse. All very well organised. Bottle of prosecco cost £35 but came in an ice bag and lasted throughout the day and lager reasonable. Lots of food stalls, varying prices but long queues. Placing bets as novices was easy!

What have they done to this what used to be a brilliant day out ? After maybe 5 years of not going I caught the train down to Tattenham Corner and thought the racing had been called off . The usual packed train was almost empty . On arriving I found out why , the racecourse has sold its soul to corporate entertainment tents .The fairground moved inside and various areas fenced off for paying customers .Just turning up and enjoying the racing ,a few beers and having fun has become standing at the rail and watching from a distance . As its common land Im not even sure how they have been allowed to do it . And just to rub salt into the wound the Tattenham Corner pub has closed down the Derby arms is selling itself as a restaurant and no market for the Mrs to waste a few pound on tat.. A complete waste of time , no wonder the crowds are staying away

The food is the derby arms is lovely- it always has been! However, as my local pub- I feel it's lost is derby- pub vibe. It is portrayed as a high class restaurant with expensive dining which I feel is a shame because the odd sandwhich and chips wouldn't go amiss for the local residents! On the other hand, the blankets outside are fantastic aswell as the forever friendly members of staff. Maybe if the duck a waffle (most favourite dish ever in life) was brought back I'd be happier 😜. That said. The derby arms is like my second home and the people in it are so welcoming and friendly. My partner are in and out three- seven times a week for one quick drink as we love the environment ! Particular thanks to Cameron and the new manager (sorry forgot your name ) and Scot because you are brilliant! I highly highly recommend this pub to ANYONE! It is so welcoming and such a comfortable environment with beautiful food! Thankyou to the derby arms team for making it such a special place in our lives !!! Much love ❤️❤️❤️xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Have been to the Derby many times and experienced the Top hat and tails, the grandstand and the picnic enclosure. By far the best is the picnic area. Go for the most expensive hamper as worth the money and great view of the racing. Very relaxed area and with your own picnic bench you definitely have somewhere to sit. My bugbear is with the website. Really frustrating to use and should be made more user friendly. Difficult to make contact by phone to buy tickets. We tried requesting a new password on the website but this was deemed immediately invalid. Why, why is it so difficult to spend £560 for four people. Plus I have to put up with my wife swearing at her computer. Get it sorted please.

Whilst out and about we stopped for a drink on Epsom Downs. There's a great cafe which serves really nice food and drinks. Fantastic views over the capital city.

Having previously been here 2 weeks ago and had a fillet steak which was really nice I thought I'd try my luck again. So I decided to take my date here service was ok problem I had we both ordered a peri peri spit roast chicken it came out so dry not even a gravy could soften it up the chips were hard and not fresh the chicken and just been steamed and been sitting around was not pro impressed at all. I Complained all they gave me was 25% off The Bill for something idid not enjoy and was not edible at all. I would have to seriously think twice coming back here again.

I won a competition to go to Derby day and stay in the Downview Suite. From our arrival we could not have been made to feel more special. Champagne and Pimms on arrival or any other beverage. The food flowed nonstop. The staff worked so very hard and I have to commend our waiter Alvaro who could not have done more for our table.
The only blight on the day was a spoilt drunk abusive young madam from a private box next door gate crashing and I did feel the staff were a little slow ejecting her and even then only sending her back to her box. However this didn't spoil our celebrations and it was an amazing day - thank you to all involved.
