Wow, wow and WOW

Arranged a trip from the far north of Buckinghamshire for 30 girls. It’s fair to say that the Curator’s tour of the RSN was a BIG hit. Thank you Susan. Not just the depth of history but the variety and intricate details of so many exhibits. We simply loved it.

Thank you so much for your feedback on your visit and delighted that you and the girls enjoyed yourselves. We hope to welcome you to our current exhibition Faces & Figures in stitch - you can see our Embroidery Studio's Blackwork portrait of our Patron The Duchess of Cornwall. Did you see that she came to visit last week, which was very exciting!

Basic Needlework Course
Mar 2019 • Solo
I booked onto a course for March 14th and was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately I work at a hospital and we were having staffing problems so I called the main number and asked how I could rearrange it to the same course which was being held again on June 11th. I was given the email address to contact and told there would be a 25 pound admin fee to change the course. This I was quite prepared to pay and emailed my cancellation about three weeks before my original course date. I received an email saying thank you and they would deal with my inquiry and call me back. Today I got a very irate call from the tutor who basically told me off because she hadn't seen my email. To be honest it has put me right off attending at all. I felt her attitude was completely unjustified, I had done everything I was told to do and informed them as instructed. Feel really upset about this. What a way to treat a potential customer

Beware of organised tours
Nov 2017 • Friends
I visited with a group and it wasn't a good experience. This was purely a visit - not a course, so please don't take this as an overall rating. If I do a course there, I will write another review.

For a start, if you visit RSN you will be seeing their embroiderers working on current commissions. This sounds great but at the time of our visit we were not permitted to talk to the embroiderers because they had a deadline to meet. Furthermore, the rooms are VERY cramped, and we were taken round in groups of 12. A lovely guide told us about the exhibits (yes, it was an exhibition apparently) but we were given only a couple of minutes to try to squeeze round the tables, avoid the embroiderers, not talk to them and actually see what was on show. This meant that it was impossible to see the artefacts properly.

Beside exhibits in the last room were tablet-like computer displays, which we were told was an app for mobile phone whereby you could put the phone beside the tablet and your phone will display information. Great - except that mobile phones were not allowed!

Apparently our problems were because we were too big a group. So why did they allow the organiser to book it then? And if you don't want the embroiderers to be disturbed, why have them working in those rooms? The guide did say that there are other rooms not open to the public.

Many of us came away from this part of our visit commenting on how disappointing it was. I hate giving poor reviews - especially about something so close to my heart a this, but really RSN, you need to think things through.

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that you were disappointed with your tour visit to the RSN. The focus for groups attending a Talk & Tour is to view RSN Archive pieces as well as some contemporary ones. If there are Embroidery Stitchers in the Studio visitors get a chance to see a project they are working on but this very much depends on the commission, whether it is confidential or not and the number of stitchers working on that day (we do not have this information in advance as the work and stitcher numbers vary daily). The commission you saw being worked was for Buckfast Abbey and the pieces were worn at their midnight mass on December 24 2017. With regards to the tablet computer displays this is something which we have trialled for the first time with an external organisation and it is unlikely that we will repeat it in the future as the technology has not worked as smoothly as we would have liked due to the Wi-Fi signal not transmitting through the thick Palace walls. The idea was to use the tablets supplied by the external organisation and not visitors own mobile phones. The technology has not been accessible to visitors and there was no added charge to visitors for this. We hope to welcome you on one of our Short Courses in the near future.

Needlework shopworks in Hampton Court Palace

Really nice experience to attend workshops in Palace. Not only to be a tourist for London travel. Do spend time to explore the life here. To be an explorer and get in touch with experience.

Amazing skill!

This is so worth a visit when you go to Hampton Court Palace. The exhibition of past work is extraordinary and the "stitchers" , as I understand they like to call themselves, are all really lovely and welcoming. There is even a little shop too with things to inspire you.

Half-day introductory class
Sep 2016 • Solo
On a tourist visit to Hampton Court Palace three years ago I picked up a course schedule from the Royal School of Needlework, and had been wanting to attend a class there ever since. I recently attended a half-day introductory class in embroidery, and was extremely pleased. The class was small, and we received ample individual attention. The classroom high up in the palace was spacious, well-lit, and pleasant, with a little room nearby for a tea break. Our instructor was excellent, and covered quite a few stitches in our three hours without making me feel rushed. I hope to take more classes here in future, and based on my first class I highly recommend this school. They offer day courses to diplomas in a variety of needlework techniques.
