High reputation no more!
Oct 2021 • Friends
I had never been here previously, and had heard what an amazing reputation Modershall Oakes had. We were due to come prior to covid, and ended up coming in October 2021 (with my two sisters) and we were all so looking forward to a relaxing break.
We were all however, most disappointed and would not visit again or recommend. The spa and hot tubs seemed far too over crowded (not in terms of COVID, but in terms of just too many people to be able to have enough ‘relaxing’ space). There ended up being a 20 minute limit in the big outdoor hot tub due to the number of guests, which is not quite what we had been hoping for. There was a number limit for the hot tub (fine), however it felt like you were constantly counting and checking if and when your time was up.
The food was very tasteless, and although it wasn’t ‘bad’ it is not what we had expected from a place with such a good reputation, and considering the overall price you pay. We were also told our £28 meal allowance could not be used against the ‘3 courses for £26’ option (?!)
Also, on arrival, we were sat in the cafe area, whilst a couple were being shown around for a wedding. They were sat having the meeting in front of everybody, with us all able to hear listening about packages and prices. This should have been in a more private room, and this just added to our feeling of not being able to relax or be at ease.
The indoor pool area was full the day we went to use it - on writing to the hotel to advise of our many issues, including this, we were told we could have made use of the ‘experience showers’ - which were closed.
We had to book to use the private hot tub (again absolutely fine)… however on arrival for both our bookings the hot tub was ‘closed’ and we had to arrange for it to be opened. Surely the whole point of booking it is so that it is ready?!
There were many other little things, which, in isolation we could probably shrug off. However a combination of all these things has left us all so disappointed.
We wrote to the hotel to highlight the issues, and we were offered a free meal. This we didn’t feel was satisfactory, and politely declined.

The illusion of luxury
Nov 2021 • Couples
I am here now with my wife for special occasion and we were hoping to get some much needed R&R. However, I’m left wondering whether our expectations were wrong. If we can’t expect luxury, then I’m afraid the pricing is wrong, and if we can’t expect some value for money then this package has been miss sold to us. If the website had offered just a glimpse of the true experience then we would be elsewhere. Some examples for those who might be considering a stay here; the ‘complimentary drink on arrival’ equates to a plastic glass of cordial. You can’t choose the exact time for your treatments, which is entirely understandable, but you can’t even choose which day you get your treatment, much less the time. The shower in room 1 runs cold; we’ve been here for one night already and it still isn’t fixed. No one answers when you try to call reception from the room (more than 6 calls over 30 minutes between 7pm and 7:30pm) so you will need to walk to reception, but you’ll be greeted by a sign saying that the desk isn’t staffed. When you do finally get to talk to someone, they’ll tell you that the maintenance team do not work into the evening, and the poor young lady on reception is left to handle the situation alone. If you go into the steam room please don’t expect any steam. The young lady staffing the bar is excellent though, and the other young lady on reception has at least offered us a free drink, but this can’t eclipse a really poor experience. First world problems, yes, but we are paying for the privilege here.

Relaxing & excellent Spa day
Came here for the day for my 40th birthday. very nice reception area & we had a nice welcome from the staff.

Changing rooms were clean & towels & robes very nice. A few of the electronic lockers weren't working & I had to try a few to get one that worked so they maybe need to look into that.

Outside pool areas were very nice - perfect to chill in there looking out over the nice grassed area. Staff very attentive is asking if we wanted any drinks. The sauna is big & light however maybe it could do with an upgrade as the temperature isn't constant & you have to keep chucking water on the coals, the temperature at times dipped below 60c when it really should be at 80-90c,

The inside pool was very relaxing & the spa pool really nice.

My massage was exceptional, really relaxing. My masseuse was very attentive & paid attention to the places that I had mentioned.

A two course lunch was included in our package & it was very tasty. I would say though that maybe it would be an idea to offer a lighter lunch menu to compliment the one that was offered as having a roast chicken dinner or beef burger in the middle of a spa day may not be everybody's favourite thing to have.

Great day & I had a great time, Just need to save some pennies & come back again.

Lovely spa in beautiful surroundings suitable for vegans
Nov 2021
Just wanted to say thank you to the team at Moddershall Oaks for our recent stay for my birthday celebration :)

The team were friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in and went out of their way to make our stay special. The facilities and rooms are absolutely stunning - a really bright and airy reception area and deli bathed in sunlight, gorgeous outdoor whirlpool and spacious sauna. The room itself was spotlessly clean and really beautifully decorated with a lovely veranda looking out over the countryside.

I did also love the cosy lounge area but found the smell of gas from the fire a little strong (I'm sensitive to smells!) to linger there for too long. A real fire would make the space 100% perfect!

Our treatments were amazing, and the evening meal was also really delicious. The staff made my birthday special and were happy to light the candles on my cake and even sung happy birthday to me!

My parents used the spa facilities (indoor pools) and said they were very very good.

What is also worth noting is the gorgeous surroundings - the beautiful lake, the woodland and the soothing koi pond with waterfall all made the stay extra special for me personally.

Personally I am used to struggling at places like this and feeling unwelcome because I am not catered for, but the experience at Moddershall Oaks was quite the opposite. Staff were incredibly accommodating and went out of their way, there are plenty of delicious vegan options both on the breakfast menu (banana bread and granola as well as smoothies really good!) and evening menu.

Although wonderful overall I do have a couple of very small bits of feedback - one being coffees. Unfortunately the coffee comes from a machine that is already pre-loaded with cow's milk, so for vegans (and those with dairy intolerances/allergies) the only option is very strong black coffee which is really not to my taste. I'd recommend investing in an electric milk heater and frother so that vegan guests can enjoy lattes and cappuccinos as it was disappointing not to be able to have a coffee, especially with the weather being cold. Also it would be nice to make the flapjacks at the deli gluten free and vegan - so easy, and it means there's a cake choice for everyone.

I'd definitely recommend Moddershall Oaks especially for any vegan guests, and will definitely be coming back for a day or evening (or to sample the vegan afternoon tea!) soon :)

Worst Aftertoon Tea Ever
Nov 2021 • Friends
Afternoon tea was absolutely awful and very over priced. You couldn’t even choose your own sandwiches and cakes, you got what you were given. The sandwiches and cakes were all stale and tasteless and the tea was luke warm. Never again.

Disappointing
Oct 2021 • Friends
Myself, my sisters and my mum attended Moddershall Oaks as a pre-wedding relaxation treat for my sister. This was our first ever Spa experience as a family and we were so excited to enjoy this together. I had found Modershall Oaks online and was blown away by the images and description on their website. Unfortunately, initial first impressions were not the same in real life. We arrived at 8:30 as requested and given forms to fill out alongside a ‘cherryade’ type fizzy drink as our arrival drink - not quite what you fancy first thing when you arrive early at a ‘spa’. A nice smoothie or juice would’ve been better. Next we were given our timings for treatments on the day. Looking through we realised that one guest would be alone from 9:00 - 9:45, then another guest alone for an hour from 12:00. Not ideal. We headed to the changing rooms (we had to find from the map, no one showed us around as promised when booking) corridors are incredibly narrow, so we found we were regularly walking into other spa guests - not ideal during covid times. There was some signage about masks but no one explained this on arrival and no one seemed to be wearing them. I was disappointed when we found the indoor spa area. It’s really small, outdated and awkwardly set up with seating, so that all guests appear to be sat around in a big circle facing one another. No covid friendly spacing. Really cramped and the pool was cold. One steam room and that was it. Luckily we found the outdoor area - which was a slight savour, however it is October and therefore freezing! No heaters. The jacuzzi pool nice, but not overly warm. Again, busy outside, but way less cramped. A member of staff was coming out regularly taking drinks orders, but drinks then took 15+ minutes to arrive. Positives were the hot stone massage, that was gorgeous, just wish it had been 60 minutes and not 25. The lunch was lovely. The decor more modern than the rest of the spa, good food and nice service. We really enjoyed this part. Our day ended at 4pm, so we headed to the changing rooms at 3:45, it seemed the entire spa guests did the same. It was so cramped, a terrible layout. Hardly any space to get changed and only one cubicle. Overall a lovely chance to be together as a family for the first time, but sadly tainted by some of the experiences. I’ve been to a couple of other spas which cost the same (we spent over £500 in total) and there is no comparison. Every member of staff we came across was lovely, no complaints here, however we will not be returning, or referring friends and really hope we receive contact from Moddershall Oaks.

Never ever go to this horrific place
Oct 2021 • Friends
If i could put 0 stars believe me i would, where do i begin... food poisoning from reheated food, no allergen menus which is breaking the law as of the 1st october natashas law came in nationwide. Customer service i do not think they know the word! Mould in hotel bathrooms, no organisation or communication for anyone. Rude was an understatement. Never ever go there for a spa day, wedding or anything else as this horrific place needs shutting down.

Not as good as our previous visit
Oct 2021
This was our second visit for my besties’ 50th birthday. Our last visit was awesome, but this visit couldn’t have been more different.
Everything was ok until lunchtime, we pre ordered on arrival to eat at 13.30, so expected to have left the restaurant by 14.30 latest, to enjoy the rest of the day. At one point we were told our food was being plated up (it didn’t arrive), finally some time later we received our food (My starter was tasteless, but the mains was a lovely beef burger with triple cooked chips and crispy maple bacon) which when it arrived was actually served with roast potatoes and my burger’s bacon looked only just cooked. We queried with a member of staff who said they’d run out of chips! Also, there was a large 21st birthday party in too, which, as we were there to enjoy a relaxing day, was not particularly enjoyable. I would point out that they weren’t excessively noisy, it’s just that 20 plus people can be rather loud and we were expecting a peaceful lunch.
The manager was called, he was 5 days in post, but immediately arranged for us to have extra spa time to compensate for lost time in the restaurant, he knocked some drinks off our bill, and we have been given a complimentary spa day. I would have settled for just having a great day in the first instance.
I would add that the restaurant has recently been extended, and in my humble opinion, spa diners and day diners should not be mixing. Also, it seems that they have bitten off more than they can chew, from a food delivery perspective.
The treatment of a hot stones massage was divine, very relaxing and the staff were very professional. On the whole, if I am honest, if it wasn’t for the freebie, I would probably go to another venue in future.

Not what it used to be
Oct 2021 • Couples
My family have been visiting Modershall Oaks for many years, when it first began as a spa the treatments were really unusual and unique (Thai massages, bamboo massages, shirodhara) and the food was delicious. We came regularly just for dinner or lunch too. Then the spa grew, the outside pool area was added and the upstairs lounge, these were welcome additions even though the range of treatments became more commercial, that was okay, a trade off if you like. The now refurbished restaurant looks gorgeous. But, today’s spa experience was really poor and I spent the day stressed and aggravated rather than relaxed.
Strict arrival time of 9.30, we were on time. Check in area packed, offered a seat in the lounge instead (great), paperwork took a while, welcome drink which was once alcoholic and I believe used to include a pastry, was now a pretty poor fizzy pop. This all took a while. Handed treatment timings around 9.50 - first treatments 10am. Then asked to pre-book lunch. Handed menu, allergens highlighted but no gluten free mains. Very lovely Tracy in the cafe phoned the chef, let me know what they could do, sorted order, got to the changing room (absolutely packed) at 9.57, quick change and then arrive out of breath for first treatment. Treatment relaxing (music in room really loud). Upstairs lounge was very nice all day if a little noisy with chatter, areas well separated. However there was no chance of getting a lounger outside or equally a chance in the outdoor pool. There was nothing relaxing at all about this area, no one made an effort to speak quietly and I could hear word for word just about every screeching conversation taking place between large groups in the pool outside even though the door was closed. People were in the pool ages (it was very overfull) and left towels on their beds. I’m not the fun police, but it is a spa and maybe you expect some quiet time. Even the sleep room played music quite loudly and the lights were quite bright.
Lunch was really poor. Despite ordering gluten free food, I was given bread with gluten which was then swapped. Prawn cocktail was tasteless. The roast turkey was okay, but the veg was bland. Three dry roast potatoes (seriously guys, roast potatoes aren’t difficult to do well) some bitter parsnips and two sprigs of broccoli. Asked for cranberry sauce, don’t have any. Someone else had cold roast beef.
Having been having facials here for many years, it felt like they are cutting back on the amount of product they use. The therapist was very skilled, but I felt like the range of Elemis products she used was far more limited than I would expect.
What else, no dry towels provided for showering, a robe actually taken whilst in the shower, no swimming costume bags. Watered down hair shampoo and conditioner. Sigh. It used to be so good here. Honestly, it’s overbooked now and just isn’t good. Which is a real real shame.
