    Relaxing day with friends
I visit Moddershall at least once a year with friends / husband and always leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. I had a spa day with friends today, which was a belated birthday celebration. We had a 25 minute treatment and lunch included in our package. The treatment was a back mask and massage , which was thoroughly relaxing and would’ve loved an additional 30 minutes! Lunch was delicious, with several options to suit dietary requirements and the staff were friendly and efficient. My only criticism is that the changing room area could do with a refurb. Issues with lockers, cramped, tired looking and overall not in keeping with the rest of the spa, which is tastefully decorated. Service in the outdoor tub was spot on and reception staff were welcoming and lovely. Thank you for another great spa day!

    Very disappointing visit!!
After returning from a day spent at your ‘luxury spa retreat’, I have to say how unhappy I am as our day came to a close. After spending our day having a treatment (which was very good, I hasten to add, with Abbi), lunch and relaxing time outside due to the weather being so good the day didn’t end well. We decided to spend an hour enjoying the indoor spa before showering and then heading for home but unfortunately we were greeted with x8 guests who thought it was acceptable to scream and shout and play games on each other’s shoulders which to my thinking isn’t spa retreat behaviour!!! Felt like we were in a public baths… nit upmarket at all. Really spoilt our day and so we cut our day short and spoke to the ladies on reception where we were offered our hot chocolates to be taken off the bill and also the unruly guests could be spoken too - too late we’re now leaving. During our journey home I have thought about it and after spending £340 for a day out and being offered this, feel very dissatisfied with the venue and managers way of dealing with this matter - obviously your venue isn’t the the ‘luxury spa retreat’ that we were led to believe. Also, I decided to post this as after emailing the establishment, I didn’t even get a response Very poor customer service

    Didn’t Meet Expectations
I firstly visited Moddershall Oaks in November as a solo birthday treat. At first sight, the building and grounds looked impressive. At reception however, I found the staff to be more interested in chatting and gossiping with each other rather than being attentive to me. I had to wait ages for my welcome drink and then even longer to be shown to the changing rooms. In the indoor pool area, the smaller pool with jets left a lot to be desired. The water had a layer of dirt/froth in the corner. Around the sides, there were dead insects that had clearly been there for some time. I had a 50 minute treatment and the room was freezing cold. I alerted my therapist and she said that the heating was broken. She told me I was really tense and to “try and forget about the cold”, but I could not stop shivering and couldn’t wait to be finished. In the restaurant, I found a hair in my fish cakes. The food wasn’t great to be honest. I alerted the spa manager on duty that I wasn’t happy with the day overall. They were lovely and gave me a complimentary glass of Prosecco and a voucher to come back again to re-do the treatment. I would’ve preferred to have my money back, but accepted the voucher. I revisited in March to redeem the voucher and told one of the managers in advance that I would be coming. On arrival I was expecting some kind of acknowledgment, but instead had to ask reception for a robe. The receptionist had offered the people in front of me one, but I had to ask. I wasn’t shown any kind of welcome or made to feel special, the girl simply asked if I’d been before and when I said, “yes” she left me to it. My first 25- minute treatment, hot shrugs, was just what felt like a woman rubbing a lukewarm pebble up and down my back. My second treatment, neom well-being with Anna was great. It had been arranged that I would be given 3 hours complimentary spa use after my treatments, but I left after 1 hour. I just felt invisible and as if I wasn’t wanted. The manager who I’d been conversing with by email didn’t even reach out afterwards to see how my second visit had gone. You’d have thought that given how awful the first visit was that they would have gone above and beyond to ensure that the second one was great. I spent more time travelling there and back than I did in the venue itself. Overall I would say the whole experience was disappointing and missed the personal touch that you would expect from a family owned business. I wouldn’t recommend.

It’s definitely lost the ‘luxury’ feel it used to have. Everywhere- indoor spa area, changing rooms, outdoor pool area and beyond were grubby. Treatment rooms not relaxing at all - cold and unwelcoming. The products used very cheap and in unbranded bottles leaving me feeling greasy after my facial rather than fresh relaxed. Glasses and cups left in the snug area for at least 4 hours ( from when we ordered to when we left! ) and no drinks orders taken in outdoor pool even though we were sat in there for a total of 4 hours throughout the stay. Food and service in the restaurant was good, the rest of the experience so poor compared to visits from years ago! Deep clean and refurb needed.

Not what it used to be
Recently had an overnight stay here to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We had room 4 with the four poster bed which was beautiful. Everything is so clean. Food was delicious. No issues with the service. What is disappointing is the temperature of the outdoor pool. We have been coming here for years and I feel it is considerably colder. The jets are not powerful anymore either. The hot tub with the 30 minutes time slot is far warmer and how the main outdoor pool used to be. I also miss other little touches like hot drinks being served in the Emma Bridgewater mugs. It’s the little touches of luxury that I feel are now lacking which is really sad as we will probably consider another spa next time.

    A little disappointing
A little disappointing just feel this place needs a bit of attention in some areas outside pool area the lounger cushions are very grubby and the loungers on the grass had no cushions on and every one had bird poo on it. Quiet/sleep room had cobwebs hanging from the ceiling just doesn't feel like a luxury spa and it's very expensive. Treatments were amazing as was the food we had a 2 course lunch and would much prefer a main and a pudding rather than a starter not really sure why that isn't an option I think we may try somewhere else next time

    A lovely treat!
Had a day at Moddershall with my daughters to celebrate the end of treatment. The treatments we had were first class really lovely with professional staff. Lunch at the restaurant was really good. It did seem very busy and we did think the inside spa area was small there are only 12 sun loungers to lie on but the outdoor space is better. Some parts of the spa need a bit of tlc especially the changing rooms. Had a lovely day but felt it was expensive.

    Great spa poor food
First used thus spa in January. We had an amazing time so booked for my mom's 70th birthday for the overnight package .Everything was as lovely as first time around apart from the food .Our evening meal was really poor .Boa bun was awful. Most of us had steak which is extra supplement of £7.The steaks all came medium well when we all asked for medium. These were taken back an returned in less than 2 minutes they were the same steaks. Chips were triple cooked but were totally burnt to a crisp .Peppercorn sauce was returned just terrible. We did tell waiter staff but there was no comment back or apology. Next day me an my friend had cream tea £16 for 2 people. The scones were rock hard again like they had just came out the freezer an microwaved. Also the smallest pot of cream we had to ask for another .Such a shame as we all enjoyed everything else .These little touches go a long way .I did nothing but rave about moddershall to people I tell but would slighty put of at returning because of the food. Such a shame .

    Lovely spa, horrible food!
Lovely spa stay, the staff we friendly and helpful when we needed them. The ladies serving drinks round the outdoor pool were great and always made sure you had a drink. Outdoor pool and jacuzzi were our favourite bits. We stayed in one of the rooms, it was clean and comfy. The bed was huge! :) The reason for only 3 out of 5 was the The Oak House restaurant. We had dinner on our 1st night there which was included in the price. Unfortunately the quality of the food, my main I had (the sticky ginger beef) had way to much ginger, so overpowering and really inedible. It came with sticky rice but it was like no other sticky rice I’ve ever had, it was like sloppy rice pudding. My dessert which was delicious but starter and main were not impressive. Me & my friend then went for breakfast which was also included the next morning, there was a selection of fruit, yoghurt & pastries to start, we had a croissant each. We then ordered a hot option. My friend ordered the avocado on sourdough with scrambled egg - when it came it was on standard wholemeal bread and she said the avocado had no seasoning or flavour really. Could have made it better herself. I ordered the full English and my sausage was pink when cut open so it put me right off, the tomatoes were not cooked so it was a few vine tomatoes just on the plate. I then found a spider in my juice. At that point we were done and wanted to leave. The waitress came over to ask if everything was ok as we didn’t eat our breakfasts and she said that the usual breakfast lady was off and indicated the man doing the breakfasts wasn’t as good and this is so true. She said that it’s ok for a sausage to be pink as lots of people question them. If this is the case I don’t know why they don’t change the sausages they buy in. Such a shame the food kind of ruined it.

Myself and my partner were disappointed overall, which was real shame as it was a little celebratory treat.

Staff
On arrival we stood for around 5 minutes staring at the girl behind the front desk whilst she avoided any sort of eye contact or verbal communication with us (she had no name badge so may have been new) the two other members of staff had scuttled off rather quickly when we walked though the door.
It all felt rather awkward from arrival to changing rooms as we were given little direction and felt very unwelcome.
When we left and tried to settle up the 3 members of staff, namely a taller gentleman seemed more bothered about having a good old laugh with staff that we had to stand there awkwardly (again) waiting to settle the bill.
The lady manning the deli that evening was however very attentive and gave great poolside service.

Facilities
The outdoor pool was ram picked and we had to wait for around 30 minutes to squeeze into a spot.
The indoor pool was dirty/bitty on the pool floor and my boyfriend almost swam into a massive hair ball, more hair was smeared up the sides. Outside of the steam room was also a large area of fluff and hair.
2/3 of the heated loungers had large holes exposing the foam within the head cushions making one of them a little uncomfortable.
The wooden loungers (mainly the end one) had a thick layer of hard grease on the arms, I only noticed as my arm felt like it was in something sticky.
The toilet on the right up at reception had an unnerving amount of urine around the base of the toilet and up the walls.
We never managed to use the indoor hot tub as it was so full.
Sauna and steam room however were nice!

Food
My boyfriend and I both ordered a bagel, I did ask for a panini but was told I couldn’t substitute chicken for bacon as everything was pre made, not what I had expected but I suppose it saves time. My boyfriend had the smoked salmon bagel but as they were pre done, when griddled the salmon became weirdly warm and brown, I would have expected this to have been prepared fresh.
The deli board sharers was however delightful and good value for money.

I wasn’t going to right a review hence no names or pictures, but it has really bugged me over the last few days that this is what was experienced.

Driving through some beautiful countryside we we were excited to see where in such a beautiful setting Moddershall Oaks was.

Hmmm. So after meandering through a gorgeous little village of the same name we drove past a lovely formal entrance that was shut and directed in to the ‘back way’ it felt. The entrance had cones and tape around it with no real purpose and signage was poor, not the greatest of first impressions.

As we snaked through the driveway we arrived at the large car park. I often feel that many establishments don’t give appropriate thought to car parks and how the detract from ones first impressions of a place. Moddershall is actually very pretty yet blighted at first by a busy car park, seems rather thoughtless yet not unique to Moddershall in the slightest.

We booked in at Reception and were greeted by the most miserable hum drum receptionist we have ever encountered, miserable is actually being kind, face like thunder!! I tried to lighten her spirit by saying how beautiful the drive through the countryside was to reach the spa - she simply replied “Cool, I see it everyday so!”

I was a little taken back by her Curt response but whatever we weren’t going to let it spoil our day. We were directed where to go to change and what to do at the time of our appointment. It would have been nice for a “luxury” establishment to walk the guests to the changing areas to better direct them and make them feel more welcome.

After changing and regrouping we headed to the outdoor pool with Prosecco on our mind, it was a birthday celebration after all.

The lady who came to take our order was far far superior to her colleague at reception, she was lovely, asked if we had travelled far, conversed briefly and delivered our drinks quickly and importantly with a smile. The same lady and her colleague regularly checked back to see if we and other guests required any other drinks.

Soon after we explored some of the other faculties before having lunch.

We had a pleasant lunch, it was nothing spectacular for a “5-star” facility was was good to very good never the less.

Moddershall Oaks is a fairly impressive example of a renovated farm complex, has been done with a lot of taste and clearly had some significant investment BUT….we felt in general that the investment had been too much about the style and not enough on the substance. The facilities are nothing more than you’d expect at just a rather nice country hotel, the treatments we satisfactory but not the best we’ve had.

When we had dinner later that evening we discussed it further and we all came to the conclusion that IF there was continuity in the staff and they all displayed exemplary service standards some of the other things would be totally over looked.

From the start to finish of our visit the trip ended up costing each person on average £280 (some much more) and there is no way it is worth it in comparison to other places of the same rating.

If we saw a great offer then we’d consider returning but for the price we paid I think we could get better elsewhere, shame!

Dec 2019
I booked to stay at Moddershall Oaks in December 2019 to propose to my wonderful girlfriend. After booking an overnight stay and some spa treatments I contacted the hotel to ask if I could make some special arrangements to propose and to see if they had any recommendations as to where might be best to do so on the grounds. They encouraged me to come in and have a tour of the place which I excitedly did.

From the first planning visit to moment that I left with my then fiancee the staff were absolutely incredible. They went out of their way to help me plan and arrange the proposal, gave us exceptional service and showed us extreme kindness. They even pretended not to recognise me when we arrived (1st class acting) and provided suitable distractions when I needed to make the final plans for the proposal.

I might also add the facilities there were delightful, in particular the outdoor hot tub which had a very handy table (tub?) service. The treatments too were of the highest standard. Which brings me to the restaurant........... also great. We are both vegetarians and the chef was more than happy to adjust the menu for our particular tastes.

As I mentioned all the staff were exceptional but I must give a special mention to Jo, Julie, Emma and most of all Leah. I am so grateful for all the help you gave us. It was an unforgettable experience. Thank you.

PS For anyone looking for a brilliant venue to propose, look no further. I can wholeheartedly recommend asking the lucky person under the pergola overlooking the lake.

After a long week working in the hospital my colleague and I treated ourselves to a spa evening. The first annoyance was the fact that they made wearing face masks mandatory in certain parts of the retreat, which is not in line with government policy and should be optional. Having worked the entirety of the pandemic on the front line the last thing we wanted was to have to wear face masks on our already sore faces during our, what should’ve been, relaxing evening away from the Covid madness. The spa evening is only 3 1/2 hours and at £80 very very expensive for what you get. The first 15 to 20 minutes are spent filling in health forms and drinking what can only be cheap Tesco value cherryade. Where is the choice in drink, surely for the price it should be a smoothie or detox tea at a spa? Why are the forms not sent in advance do that the entire evening is actually spent using the facilities? By the time you have filled in your forms and been allowed to go to the changing area half an hour of your spa time has already passed. We had paid to have a 20 minute treatment during our evening, which we were very much looking forward to. Unfortunately it very much felt like the lady delivering my treatment had had a long day and really couldn’t be bothered. The massage was very basic and I had to listen to her sniffing throughout my not so relaxing treatment. I did not want to seem confrontational but for the majority of my treatment I just wanted to tell her to go and get a tissue. We then ordered some food which was very tasty and enjoyable, but extremely overpriced for what was delivered. Finally we ended up going into the outdoor whirl pool which we only lasted a couple of minutes in as it was so cold that it was not tolerable, even on a warm September evening. Overall there is not a single part of this experience that I would recommend, thank goodness I was in good company. Very overpriced, masks enforced which is the opposite of relaxing and all together frustrating. I will not be returning and would not recommend this to anybody who doesn’t want to feel ripped off.

Visited this spa for the day yesterday with my friend. Would not go back or recommend.

Negatives:
Expensive in relation to its size and facilities. I have experienced a lot of different size spas and the price did not reflect the experience.
Check in was painful and was asked 3 times by the same person if I wanted a tour of the facilities.
Staff were not very attentive and seemed like they needed some customer service training.
Was asked twice by the same person if I’d had a nice day. Please don’t ask me a question if you’re not going to listen to my answer.

Positives:
Body couture treatment was fabulous (therapist was Called Friday).
Lunch was tasty.
Location is great, surrounding scenery is beautiful.

It wouldn’t take much (staff training and coordination) to get this establishment up to the required standard but it’s definitely not there at the moment.

I contacted moddershall oaks about any mid weeks offers that they may have. They called me back straight away and gave me a great spa day for 2 with mud treatment for a discounted offer (worth calling as I saved £50)
We arrived and from the moment the experience started I could tell we would have a great day. The staff were all so lovely and helpful. They could not do enough to make your day special. We had lunch included and again this was excellent and really complemented the day. We made use of all the facilities on offer however we were very lucky to have the good weather too so a relax by the lake was so peaceful in the sun.
Our mud treatment was at the end of the day, this was great and we had quite a laugh about it tbh as we both didn’t look a pretty sight covered in mud. This was a great finish to the end of our day.
We will most definitely return and loved every second. Thank you for making our 3rd wedding anniversary a special day.

I came here paying £150+ expecting to be wowed - instead I very disappointed. On arrival we were given these ribena like drinks which were of course alcohol free. The whole experience felt like they were always reaching, never able to hit that high point. The pool outside was okay, everything here is however overpriced. The evening food wasn’t the best. Very small portions for what you pay (included in the £28 allowance). Overall I will not be coming back here again or recommending to others - unfortunately I do not feel the cost warrants the experience.

I booked a spa evening for my husband’s birthday present. The experience was supposed to start at 6 until 10pm. We weren’t having any treatments but I pre booked 2 bottles of wine which cost about £58. We arrived about 5.45 but by the time we had filled in the forms and then waited for towels and gowns it was 6.30. First hour the service was great but then it really stopped. Someone came out at 9.10pm to say that it was last orders at the bar which I felt was a little early since the experience is until 10pm. We went for a chill inside in a kind of zen room then I asked at 9.20 for a hot chocolate to be told no as they had closed?? At 9.40 we were then told that all areas were now closed and to make our way to the changing rooms?? Again a bit confused as we were booked until 10pm. When the question was asked by someone else they were told that actually the experience isn’t until 10, you had be dressed and out by 10. In my opinion definitely not worth the money paid. We should have just gone for a lovely meal

Visited numerous times and have always recommended Moddershall but I’m not sure I would again.
A few issues no welcome drink, rude restaurant manager who told us we were nearly an hour late( we weren’t it was 20 minutes and with a twin pregnant daughter that’s good going!) we were told the next guests had been seated and we would have a wait for food.
We were celebrating my other daughters birthday but despite being asked on check in and booking if it was a special occasion nothing happens. Not sure why you are asked ???
Restaurant is refurbished and looks amazing but the food is not that good. Had some special meals here in the past( duck massaman curry) and one of my recommendations for the spa was the top quality food. It’s much more standard fare now we had steak ( overcooked) sea bass and fish and chips.
Breakfast next day was similarly underwhelming pale sausages, eggs benedict literally swimming in watery sauce. We were not asked at either meal if all was ok ( we would have said )
The spa was also VERY busy, worryingly so. Reception staff were removing towels and belongings from loungers because it was overcrowded and people were sitting on towels on the grass. Normal conditions I understand this but really at the moment should we be handling each other’s belongings and sharing loungers.
I expected less guests not more and this was the busiest I’ve ever seen it.
There is a lot of marketing going on for morning spa and yoga so day guests are pouring in from early morning.
One of the treats for me as an overnight guest was the quietness of the first few hours but no more I’m afraid.
We left at midday, too busy, well tried to after a 20 minute wrangle with the bill ( all the food was on despite being in the package )
To be fair the reception staff were helpful and the pool servers brilliant, we got our welcome drink at breakfast and a free drink for the rudeness.
I’m not sure you can double the restaurant size, mass market the spa and for the basic facilities to stay the same.
Special place potentially spoilt and at £800 for a night away it has to be almost perfect.

We have been regular customers of both the spa and restaurant for several years and recently took the opportunity to visit the refurbished restaurant hoping to be dazzled and impressed once more by the setting, service and excellent food. But how disappointed we were!

The surroundings have been upgraded and look stunning. The service was great with attention to detail. Those are the plus points.

However, the first thing that completely ruined the ambiance was having a wedding DJ (and a poor one at that) only 30 yards away playing appalling music and obtrusive and jarring commentary. Urgh!

Then the food… well I would say it was below average. I paid £22 for a steak which was not cooked as I had requested and not anywhere near as succulent nor flavoursome as a Sainsbury’s taste the difference aged sirloin. It was accompanied by 9 chips in a wire basket and forest mushrooms that looked (and tasted) more like magic mushrooms except less flavour and no high haha! Yuk!!

My wife ordered a chicken Caesar. Oh dear… the salad was thrown together and the chicken sliced and plonked atop. The Caesar dressing couldn’t even be detected so we had to ask for some to be supplied.

The staff seemed stressed and the restaurant manager chatted with us explaining how difficult it had been for them to maintain staff levels and how annoyed customers had been because of the noise from wedding DJs. ‘It’s every night.’ he explained.

Hugely disappointing all round, and certainly not the high standard we had been used too in the past. We rate the meal and experience only 3 out of 10. Overpriced, ill considered setting and food quality below average.

My advice… go to a harvesters or your local fish and chip shop. You’ll get what you expect and good quality too at a fair price.
