Recommended cafe
Aug 2020
Situated next to the large car park at the bottom of town, which on Saturdays has a lovely local market.

We had a lovely ‘wholesome’ salad to share with a large bowl of chips, plenty to share. But there was other choices including breakfast sandwiches and poached eggs. A nice selection of cakes, all freshly made on the premises.

Chairs and tables inside as well as in a garden. Covid safe, praise to staff who reminded customers to wear a mask when ordering food.

So good we went back for coffee and cake in the afternoon.

Recommended.

There are also a couple of craft workshops to view and shop.

A place that has lost its edge
Mar 2020
It used to represent a great variety of crafts, amongst which one could find the finest. Now, still above the tourist souvenir shops, it doesn't offer the best in originality.

Fabulous exhibition!
Mar 2020
The Arts Centre incorporates an exhibition gallery, a shop, a café and workshop/studio space.
The small shop had a fabulous range of items, many from local artists. We spent a small fortune! 😊
A ground floor café serves an interesting selection of light meals at reasonable prices.
At the time of our visit there was a fabulous exhibition entitled ‘Fifty Bees’ (free to enter, but donations appreciated) inspired by the work of Somerset Artist, Lydia Needle. The project features the artistic response of 50 other artists to Lydia’s environmental project to catalogue the various species of British bees through art pieces made from wool and thread. This exhibition deserves much wider exposure!
All in all, an excellent centre that deserves the support of everyone!

Poor family experiance
Aug 2019
The food was good however the false smiles and attitude of a member of staff very disappointing and then to crown it off having the embarrassment of being called back in public view of others saying I hadn't paid when I had, 95 pounds to be exact. First and last visit will go back to friendly café in the square.

Cafe absolutely excellent but the shop and gallery need to catch up

I arrived in Frome a little too late for lunch last Saturday, and the places I had earmarked for lunch were either full or had stopped serving. I didn't want to go to the garden cafe again as the last time I went it was mostly disappointing. On my way back to the car I happened upon the cafe of Black Swan Arts. It was 3pm, I asked if lunch was still available but was told the ovens were full of cake. A good sign and I don't even like cake! I was offered a small salad plate with the 2 remaining salads, I accepted readily. What was proffered was absolutely delicious, visually stunning and a very good value for money. I received 2 generous helpings of the salads topped with asparagus, avocado, hummus, seeds, and best of all, rose petals. All with 2 slices of delicious sourdough. The girls running the cafe were extremely courteous and professional. Many thanks for an unexpected treat.
The other areas of the arts center need to be a lot more discerning in my opinion in order to match up to this very delicious lunch.

Two Gallery spaces, Short Lease Studios, Shop and Cafe!
Apr 2018 • Friends
This is a lovely place to meet up with friends or family. It's a multi use art facility with a large top floor gallery and a smaller but interesting (spiral stair case)one. It has a range of artworks being made and sold in short lease studios and a shop which has one off and truly unique art, cards, jewellery, ceramics and other artists wares. The cafe is lovely with a range of delicious meals, snacks, cakes and bread to buy and enjoy.
Well, worth a visit but why not check out their website first to see if there is an event or exhibition on then you can combine your visit to the cafe with that as well!

I used to visit here regularly for years and only stopped going so often because my friend who I used to meet up with passed away.

Great food, great service

Really tasty food, would highly recommend the salads, the breakfast menu and the delicious home made cakes, good coffee too! Very friendly staff, who were very helpful when my grandmother found the soup to spicy for herself, they were quick to replace it with something else and refund the difference, couldn't fault it! And they were happy to let us sit a little longer while some of my family members looked around the exhibition, We weren't rushed at all, would highly recommend!

Excellent Gallery
Sep 2018 • Friends
The Art Gallery, which includes the Round Tower, is always worth visiting. It offers a variety of collections and some of the displays for these have been amazing.
The recent 'Aborealists' quality of work was incredibly varied, outstanding and, with the Paul Nash painting on public show after 70 years in 'hiding' was a bonus to see. During this exhibition there was a small charge which helped with the enormous insurance cost of getting such a special painting, but, it was worth it.
The previous 'Bronze' exhibition was equally exciting with lots of three dimensional work and an opportunity for anyone, including children, to have a go at some modelling.
The current exhibition, 'Volkhardt Müller-Plantation', is thought provoking and requires time to enjoy the video series of work. This is explained in a book available for purchase.
If you want to widen your interest in art, this is a Gallery worth visiting with Volunteers who can sometimes offer to expand on the information available about current work.
